Retrospective: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 08:30 AM MDT | By Ash_735
With Grand Theft Auto V news hitting faster than ever in the past week, gaming website EuroGamer looks back on Rockstars previous attempt at the West Coast in the highly popular, and some say the best, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and talking about how it still stands up today:
The characters are boxy, the textures crude and the draw distance is often shocking, but there's a sense of place that still impresses. Even more so when you consider the sheer scale and ambition of what Rockstar attempted with San Andreas. With competitors snapping at their heels, clearly there was a need to keep forging ahead, pushing back the boundaries of the sandbox to see how much world we could take.

Does San Andreas still impress you? And what fond memories do you have looking back on the game?

With 4 Solid years of San An gaming under my belt, yeah it's my fave :)
Like any GTA the music is the best. But my enjoyment came from two things, the size of the map and the different areas one can enjoy, and the story, Better than Vice, Way Better than III, and the only 4th story i have really played through is Nico's, the other two episode stories are a blur to me. Whilst GTA IV had a cool new engine with burning tyres and a radio you could hear outside your car (and of coarse much more) the game was ruined by stacking 4 - 6 islands on top of themselves and then filling said islands to the brim with skyscrapers. San An did not suffer this, the lush green hills and mount chillard are just as impressive as the night life in Santos or Bridges in Fierro. The truck missions the gang missions the bike riding the site seeing.. all these elements of the best game i have ever played (besides HL2) will never be forgotten.

"To play San Andreas in 2012 is to see Grand Theft Auto in transition, struggling to find a way to bridge the gap between the knockabout stunts of old and the more high-minded ambitions the studio had for the sandbox format."

This almost perfectly sums up how I feel about San Andreas.

I agree about the scope being the best and worst parts about San Andreas.
I'd also say that about IV.

As awesome as San Francisco and Las Vegas are, you spend relatively little time there. Same with Alderney in IV (yes I know the DLC had a bigger role).

The sandbox is too large. I'd rather the sandbox be smaller but have more sand in it, if you catch my meaning. That being said I really hope that V is just Los Angeles and the fill it with a lot detail and improve the quality of the side-activities and side missions.

One of the best things about RDR was the sidemissions. Incredible stuff.

Most people i have spoke to about GTA:5 want it to be like GTA:San Andreas but with the GTA:4 physics. To me GTA:4 was a massive dissapointment. it felt like rockstar held back a rediculos amount of things you could do. Iv been playing San an since all the hype for GTA5 came about. honestly i'll give up with GTA 5 if its as conservative as GTA4 . being that the only reson i ever got a playstation was to play gta vice city. The list of things you could do in San an and not do in GTA4 is endless.
