Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Coming to PSN This Week!

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 06:30 AM MDT | By Ash_735

Good news everyone, the original Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to the PlayStation Network this week, joining Grand Theft Auto III in the PS2 Classics section.

Now sadly again with it being a PS2 Classic, this does mean it's just the original game, no HD upgrade, no Trophies/Achievements, just the original bare bones classic that you all know and love, perfect to pick up and replay again to get you in the mood for Grand Theft Auto V next year.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be available on the US and EU PlayStation Network from this Tuesday (US) and Wednesday (EU), the game is already available on Xbox Live in the Games On Demand (Xbox Classics) section.

Eurogamer.net revisits the Hot Coffee Mod scandal

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 03:04 PM MDT | By rappo
Those of us that have been around in the GTA community for several years can undoubtedly remember the wild uproar that surrounded one of the most downloaded mods of all time: GTA San Andreas's Hot Coffee Mod by PatrickW. This simple mod unlocked a side game allowing CJ to have sex with his girlfriends, but it also unintentionally unlocked a whirlwind of controversy surrounding the game, including a few lawsuits and an Adults-Only ESRB rating, effectively shutting San Andreas out of most video game retailers.

Video game site Eurogamer.net has decided to revisit the controversy with some transcripts of emails and phone conversations between Rockstar Games president Sam Houser and his associates, along with quotations from PatrickW, the modder himself, describing the situation from his perspective.

The article is a rare look at Sam Houser's vision for the Grand Theft Auto series, and how important it is for him to constantly be pushing boundaries:
"Can we confirm that these are the content changes that need to be made? As I mentioned to Terry [Donovan, then CEO of Rockstar Games], I was pretty shocked by the list. The cuts are everywhere. It doesn't feel like we are pushing any boundaries now. Why bother? I really, really do not want to change this stuff. It feels SO wrong at the behest of psychotic, mormon [sic], capitalist retailers." - Sam Houser

While general mischief always seems to be the goal in the Grand Theft Auto series, I can't say I've seen a game in the series push the envelope like San Andreas did. The Hot Coffee Mod seemed to be a very traumatic experience for Rockstar - let's hope that their willingness to stir up some controversy isn't lost in GTA V.

San Andreas rated for PS3

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 06:07 AM MDT | By victim
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has let slip on an unannounced version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the Playstation 3.

The ESRB also rated both GTA III and Vice City earlier this year, but since then only III has had its release. It can be assumed both Vice City and San Andreas will be available on the Playstation Store soon, but we'll have to wait for an official announcement from Rockstar before that happens.

Retrospective: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 08:30 AM MDT | By Ash_735
With Grand Theft Auto V news hitting faster than ever in the past week, gaming website EuroGamer looks back on Rockstars previous attempt at the West Coast in the highly popular, and some say the best, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and talking about how it still stands up today:
The characters are boxy, the textures crude and the draw distance is often shocking, but there's a sense of place that still impresses. Even more so when you consider the sheer scale and ambition of what Rockstar attempted with San Andreas. With competitors snapping at their heels, clearly there was a need to keep forging ahead, pushing back the boundaries of the sandbox to see how much world we could take.

Does San Andreas still impress you? And what fond memories do you have looking back on the game?

San Andreas is North America's third best selling game since 1995

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 07:47 AM MDT | By Neil
Statistic tracking firm NPD has revealed a list of the top ten video games sold in North America since it began recording data back in 1995. According to the firm, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the third biggest seller in that time.

In the data provided to Industry Gamers, San Andreas is the only Grand Theft Auto title ranked in the top ten. Wii Play and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock managed to beat it to the higher spots.

It's interesting that Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't make an appearance in the list, despite recording extremely impressive early sales. It looks like the game lost a significant amount of momentum following its huge launch and the incredible success of Nintendo's Wii games can't have helped either.
