Grand Theft Auto under fire, yet again

GTAGaming.com - General News | @ 03:46 AM CST | By Zidane
What started out as a simple modification for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, is now becoming the root of a new attack against the franchise. The mod is called "Hot Coffee", and it opens up a new "pornographic" mini game to players, revealing more sexual actions, and "skin" on the player's girlfriends, than originally intended for the final retail version of the game. I was browsing around to see what the current situation was involving this mod in the media, and I found a CBS news article and video brief. It pretty much explains how this may affect the game. You can visit that page here.

Just one more thing I have to point out is, in the video they claim this "mini game" can be accessed through a simple cheat code, and is easy to unlock for anyone, which is not true. Getting this to work involves modifying the main coding of the game, which was done by an experienced dedicated modder.

If you'd like, you can post your thoughts on this in the forums.

Hilary Clinton is poking at Rockstar also.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/13/news_6129021.html
New York Times also proved everyone wrong before Hilary ever came in the topic. New York Times showed that this is a game for 18+, not for little kids, parents fault if they see the porn on the game and their own, and it was barely porn. You had to go find the website, download the mod, INSTALL IT, then go and do the missions to get up to taking the girl out, get a successful date, then finnaly see the porn. This wasn't made by Rockstar, sure it was in the game that Rockstar had put in there, but it was locked away and not accessible. But, a very good modder had cracked it, not Rockstars' fault.

Its another woeful excuse of blaming entertainment media for being the downfall of man. Like all the antidepressant pill popping, shoddy parenting, celebrity driven society has no bearing on any of it.

Blaming Rockstar and the modder is an excuse to not be a reliable parent or responsible individual. A child playing an M Rated game that required a parent or adult (I sat in a long line at EBGames when SA was released and witnessed a horde of 'caring' parents buy this title for their 14 year olds) to purchase it for them is bad enough. Then when the children get a hold of an 'illicit' mod they get all worked up when some 'parenting' (ie monitoring your childs PC activities) could have prevented it. Its a way to circumvent blame from where it really belongs.

"Shit! Im not a bad parent! I give my son/ daughter free reign to be the individual they want to be! If something goes wrong, Ill blame society, teachers and entertainment media! I am not at fault whatsoever! Where are my xanax?"

There is, of course, a media and political bias against GTA. Just about every game contains questionable content. They reference the Sims, perhaps the one example to the contrary. Killing games like Doom3 and Half Life2 get a pass because you are 'going medieval' on Aliens and oppressive kidnappers on foriegn worlds and other dimensions instead of a real world-like cityscape filled with 'innocent' pedestrians. That is, of course, until intelligent extraterrestial life visits earth and the well-parented Redneck Bob (who smokes pot with his parents) steps out of his trailer and blows away an alien with a shotgun he stole from his grandfathers arsenal.

Wow, nice post VicoDIN.
Exactly, they need to look around the world, and see the problems in that instead of centering it soly on games.

What a crock of bullshit yet again.... im sick of this crap... if you are influenced to kill people by playing a god damn video game, you probly shouldnt be playing them and should be locked away in a rubber room with a banana...... and this CBS asshole doesnt even know what hes talking about, saying how theres hidden pornography that we knew about and parents didnt. I hope he tries to take this to court and gets made to look like the horses ass he is. Crusader against violence..... yeah riiiiiiiiiiite ... fuck off allready. :)

OK its been a while since I posted her but make no mistake I still come and read this and the cnn points out that the sims is still good. MAKE NO MISTAKE you can also download off the internet to view them naked. There is alot of bad things out there and not everything is good. Dont rate it M for Mature if your still gonna blame kids for getting the game....So when you gonna have that patch up on here. ...that was a joke.

CNN only deals with stereotypes and stereotypical things somtimes...just because GTa has violence in it they think that is a big deal but since the Sims has no violence, they think that is safer for children although I was playing the sims once and bought a love bed and the Sims characters had loads of fun on that

In other words...Yes they do have sex but this was only on the first Sims for the console

It should've been AO anyway. I don't understand why it isn't a criminal offence to sell an M-Rated game to a minor. That's the problem here.

Did anyone ever consider the possibility that Rockstar would put these assets in the game with the intention of gaining media attention? Cynical, maybe. Realistic, possibly. I can only imagine the number of people who would go out and buy the game after they found out about this.

Sad part is, the news media spews Gospel out their rear ends, and whatever they say is TRUTH. If they say it can be accessed just by a cheat code, then THAT IS TEH TRUTH no matter what the reality is. Showmanship and crass sensationalism these days is more important than what a reporter should do--GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT.

It took someone a lot of work to modify the code of the game to unlock this bit. It takes the player a fair bit of work to GET to it once it's installed (which, I admit, is relatively straightforward for an experienced user, but could be difficult for a novice). Plus, as mentioned, this is an M-rated game. Nobody under 17 should be playing it (and I can't emphasize that enough--this game is NOT FOR KIDS!).

This is never going to stop, though. The older generation always believes the radical, extreme methods of the younger will be the downfall of civilization (when the older generation was doing the same thing to THEIR parents when they were young). They say video games are the downfall of Man? Right, all those illicit drugs and unprotected sex you guys did back in the '70s, that was okay right? Nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

Freaking retards.... It's not a cheat code, it's a mod created by an experienced modder in the community. The game is meant for 18 year olds, thus the M rating. In the USA (where the controversy is happening), you have to be 18 in order to view porn. 18 for the game, 18 for porn... Hmm... I see nothing as to why the game should be under any controversy right now. I find it ammusing how the parents wish to blame Rockstar as soon as something like this happens. The fact that the game isn't even meant for people under 18 just shows bad parenting on their behalf.

You have to download a mod,for christs sake,it isn't like R* can't prevent modders from modding. They can't possibly blme the ESRB for this incident. Come to think of it,why would R* even leave the code in the game?

They probably figured nobody would A: look for it or B: find it or C: crack it.

On all counts, they figured wrong.

Oh, and this is America. We can blame whoever we want, regardless of responsibility. Didn't you know that?

It's a load of bull, everybody who has tried the game knows it.

Unfourtunatly, many members of the media and government officials don't have time to game, and therefor make their own conclusions.

Why are they doing this to GTA only? I'm sure there are other games with
nudity, which are easier to get. It's not like every kid hasn't looked at porn. IF not,
then eventually they will.

Found this over at Gamespot:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/15/news_6129301.html

Hopefully this will not hurt GTA, and they will not be forced to slap a Adults only rating on it, as many parents who believe that their son/daughter is mature, might not buy a game that has a adults only rating.

Every GTA release gets heat from media whores who get off through political grandstanding. There really is nothing new under the sun.

Parents need to be held responsable for purchasing their children games with a M or AO rating (Corruption of a minor laws already exist for purchasing children alcohol and pornography) They need to monitor their children, and be held responsable when they aren't.

Retailers also need to be taken to task if they end up selling M or AO rated games to children, same rule applies if stores decide to sell your children tobacco, alcohol or pornography.

But then, people aren't big on Personal Responsability, and until we stop letting Big Brother tell us what is and is not OK, we're going to be subject to censorship and this incessant saber rattling.
