CEO: GTA IV DLC not as big a hit as Take Two expected

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 10:02 AM CST | By Neil
Ben Feder, CEO, Take Two InteractiveTake Two CEO Ben Feder recently spoke uncharacteristically candidly about the performance of Grand Theft Auto IV's two downloadable episodes, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

He believes that the content arrived too late to take advantage of the massive hype that the game had at its original launch (the episodes were released 10 and 18 months after GTA IV) and this had an adverse affect on how it sold. He's hopeful that the company can continue to make money from it for a long time though, with its price remaining relatively static unlike traditional retail releases.

The most interesting nugget of information he shared in his address to shareholders this past week has to be this though:
"Episodes from Liberty City seems to have been most appealing to those who finished GTA 4 and wanted more story and gameplay, which is a smaller market than originally expected"
What do you think the reasons are for the episodes' poor sales? Did you buy the episodes without finishing GTA IV first? Share your thoughts in the comments!

The Lost and Damned actually sold pretty damn well. Rockstar shot themselves in the foot with EFLC. Because of that, people wouldn't want to get the DLC as it didn't have all the content, this also stopped TLAD sales as EFLC had a more complete version of the game compared to the un-updated DLC version.

Making Exclusives within Exclusive and blowing off fans who already got the DLC isn't the way to do these things Rockstar, it was already on a struggling line by being exclusive to the 360 only leaving out the PC and PS3 markets, but to then screw over 360 owners who bought The Lost and Damned, it was just a double negative to get more money.

Lol, its not going to make it to PS3 dude. ;)

Might just get to a PC near you though... which would be even better. Except it would be cracked so fast. So R* probably won't do that either.

I guess Ash is right, in the long run even the 360 players got a bit of a shit deal.

It will, it's just a matter of time.

No exclusive deal made through money runs forever.

i have all GTA games that have come out for consoles
but one of the reasons that i think it did not do well is of a personal one
since take two sold out to Microsoft for 50 mill and only released it for the 360 i will not buy it
i am not a fanboy cause i own all 3 versions of the game the ps3 version looks a lil grimy the 360 a lil better and the pc the best but i got them all for my reasons
but i think it would have done better if it would have been released for all 3 of them

I know why i didnt buy it, because it wasnt available to me....

I was really hyped up for TLAD...I would have bought it in a heartbeat if they would have released it for the ps3...I would still buy it if they released it tomorrow....

like was said before....with only 1\3 of your fanbase able to play you cant expect too great of sales....

Those i*iots can't even seem to do math correctly, don't they?
If you get a full stomach by eating a full piece of cake and if you only eat about 1/3 of it, how are you supposed to get full? Oh, I really think I should send this answer to them.
Well...not if all of the Xbox users buy 2 to 3 copies each for nothing, then they will have the sales which they expected though. I think even a 5 years old boy can lead this answer...is he really a falt bald grown-up? Not a phtoshopped pic of a elementary school kid right? XD

I thought the DLC's were really good...but from a financial point of veiw...it was too late...but you've got to remember how long it takes to make the DLC's.

Overall I think is was about 50/50.

I won't buy an Xbox 360 just for GTA, realease them for the PC and I will buy them as I bought GTA IV too. I'm a big GTA fan and I own almost every copy of GTA (no GameBoy ones, no GTA 1 expansion, and no Xbox 360, but I got PSP and DS).

To be honest, I haven't gotten the episodes yet. It's more about me procrastinating, though. I'm always meaning to buy it, but I get sidetracked & end up getting something else...

I think that the poor sales would have to do with the fact that the episodes are -only- for XBox. Which I'm sure many above me have already made clear. I just got an Xbox 36o after being a Sony fan for years & I'd have to say--if I had the PS3 & then figured out I wouldn't be able to get the episodes, I'd be pretty teed.

But yeah. I bet if they'd open it for the PS3, there'd be a bit more sales.

Two best friends one a ps3 gamer and the other is an xbox gamer. they both went out one day to a game store the xbox gamer goes "haha xbox have EFLC what do you have?"
the ps3 gamer goes "your freaking console because the bastard who made EFLC WONT make them for ps3 or pc EVEN THOUGH PROFITS WILL SORE."
the xbox gamer is confused by his friends choice of words
"hey you got my what now?"

Ha, they got what they deserved.

First, letting Microsoft buy them out for exclusivity on the DLC. That was their first mistake, believing MS when they said they would do fine just releasing it on the 360.

Second, why are you releasing DLC so late anyways? Assassin's Creed II came out in November, it's first DLC is coming out this month.

Third, GTA:IV just wasn't that fun. Lack of variety of vehicles, no bikes, no fun guns, no good cheats, etc. Everything that made past GTA's so fun. People got bored because that stuff wasn't in it, so the late DLC release really hurt. Instead you put that better stuff in DLC because you think you can force people to pay for the things that should have been in the game to begin with... wrong. Oh yea, and the main character was a vagina.

With the next GTA, don't be such money whores and release DLC for both consoles. You should also put stuff in the game that is actually what people want.

Xan said it best hahaha

I just bought a 360 so I could play online with my freinds who have 360 even though Im diehard PS3 and PC fan, so now I have GTA4 on all 3 systems (360 has the worst graphics) but I was so pissed off when I found out they sold out to MS, GTA4 was the only reason I bought a PS3 when it very first came out, now I had to buy another console just to play the expansion (which came way to late and has alot of new features that should have been in the first release) It seems to me like R*, MS, and Take Two just want to see how far us gamers will bend over so they can **** us in the *** even more.
I wish EA would have bought these useless pr***s out.

QUOTE from 247WallSt.com

How Does Take-Two (TTWO) CEO Ben Feder Keep His Job?

Shares of Take-Two (TTWO) Interactive fell 14% after hours as the company cuts its forecasts of earnings and sales for its fiscal 2009. The major reason for the change was the delay of the launch of the BioShock 2 game from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2010.

This is one in a long series of failures by the management of Take-Two which is headed by CEO Ben Feder. The shares are down almost 60% since he joined the company, and has not only turned down a generous buyout offer from Electronic Arts (ERTS), but has also missed forecasts on more than one occasion.
