Chinatown Wars sells just 90,000 units in March

GTA: Chinatown Wars - General News | @ 09:04 PM MDT | By zombienm
For one of the Nintendo DS's highest rated games ever, Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars sold a startlingly low 90,000 units in it's first month on store shelves. Last week there was controversy over whether the game sold 400,000+ or only 200,000 units, but it appears both of those numbers were greatly over estimated.

This number pales in comparison to Grand Theft Auto IV, released almost a year ago, which sold over 6 million copies in it's first week alone. However, history has shown that games on Nintendo platforms tend to start out slow yet go on to generate huge revenues over time.

It's a shame that it did so poorly. It is such an innovative game.

How does it fare by comparison to other DS games? I know people with the Nintendo DS who've played/owned 60% of the game library and haven't bought a single title...

One of the DS's other biggest titles, Mario Kart DS, sold about 200,000 in it's first month despite it being highly anticipated. However, it is still one of the systems best selling games and it is several years old. I think Chinatown Wars will sell very well, just over a spread out period. Pokemon Platinum, also released in March, sold over 800,000 in just that month though, so it might be a different story with different games.

With the rave reviews and word of mouth Chinatown Wars is getting, I really expect it to keep selling and eventually get a lot higher numbers.

Japanese probably don't like it. It doesn't have cute anime like characters.

Though ironically all of the cutscenes are animated.

maybe it was because they brought it out on DS. If it was on the Wii or XB360 & PS3, it would of sold what Rockstar would've expected to.
