Saints Row 2 taking shots at GTA IV

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 05:12 PM MDT | By Koolio
Today, THQ released a new video their game Saints Row 2, and it seems to be taking some shots at GTA IV:

My only comment is that this looks pretty kickass! Tell us what you think in the comments.

Well they have point.

GTA4 went "realistic gritty" and failed in most people's eyes, these guys are goingfor "sandbox! fun spirit!" way (which is how Rockstar used to be).

I gotta admit these activities DO look much more interesting.

maybe gtagaming.com should become saintsrowgaming.com
GTA IV fans are being lost by the second. THQ had a direct hit with their new trailer.

My God, I haven't even watched someone playing GTAIV in my presence, let alone play it myself, and it's already losing it's bloody fanbase. Now I'm saddened that not only have I missed out on the hype of getting it on release-night/day and racing through it in competition with friends, but now I have yet to do any of that and people are already getting out of it.

Sad, sad, sad.... I still want to get GTAIV....

But for those who've become bored with it, have you seen Liberty City's heart? (An actual heart for the city? In the Statue of Happiness?)

The looks nucking futs.

If Rockstar adds more stuff to do with DLC, the game should still have legs.

I'd be playing if not for the gad damn disc read error I kept getting. Haven't played in a month.

It really goes to show that people's doubts about the competition aren't in fact true. THQ does not impose restrictions on themselves and don't believe in following some sort of idea of "realism" only to contradict themselves an abundance of times. Because they don't have nearly as many expectations on them, and not the same amount success, they probably have a lot less of an ego and are probably a lot more willing to come out with a better product. Don't expect some flagrantly false marketing.

These activities look genuinely enjoyable, and I'll probably be picking up the game when it comes out.

It looks pretty fun. There are some activities that definitely progress in the natural evolution of "sandbox" gaming. SR2 may get a lot of pub. for what seems like more overall violence than GTA4. It could be that R* toned things down a little to take the lawsuit spotlight of themselves

Also, the guy who did the voice over for this trailer did a good job.

I think Rockstar just got pwnt. They should've said something about GTA IV's weird controls. Realism is nice and all, but when it even changes the way you can move the character to something weird, then you've gotta be a little unrealistic about it.

I’m really surprised by the responses here. With 4, RS clearly chose a simpler, more straight forward game than San Andreas. Even if you’re not psyched with the new direction, it’s certainly graphically a massive leap forward.

Some of the mini-games looked interesting in the ad, but it’s still basically GTA. No matter what twist they may put on the game, Saint's Row will always be classified in the "GTA-style" genre. Pretty sad. I'm personally a lot more excited for Metal Gear.

Why are so many GTA haters registered on a GTA fan site??

Rockstar is still genuine to me, they still have their class. They have a style that others only try to imitate, but never come close, because that's impossible to take from them. SR was an inferior game and missed the mark.. what are the odds of SR2 going above and beyond GTA IV in terms of depth and the evolution of games?

It doesn't look like it... these nothing-but-sandbox style of game aren't considered real games by other developers because they don't *create* any experience for the player. They just give them the tools and expect the player to create it all... well that's fine for the first time experience, but it dies quickly. In blatant terms it's just lazy work covered up with bells and whistles to make a quick buck. Rockstar builds something bigger than a sandbox, they build a whole world. Liberty City feels like a real place.

We are bitter GTA fans rather than GTA haters.
Btw would you people stop calling every sandbox-style game "GTA wannabe".

That's like saying every puzzle game is a Tetris wannabe.

They all DO have their style.
This looks and feels nothing like GTA judging from that trailer.

I didn’t say sandbox in my comment. I think it’s a GTA rip off because it’s an imitation of everything that is GTA. Jacking cars, creating mayhem, the humor, the style. This ad even includes base jumping, demolition derby, monster trucks, barnstorming with planes. Get real.

littlebigplanet looks to be a “sandbox style” game and couldn’t be more opposite than GTA. I'd just perfer to play a game that attempts to create something new. I wasn't a fan of the True Crime game series either.

You REALLY think this looks "nothing like GTA"??

First thing first,

It was many fans' idea that putting in TV and bowling would be great, so R* is listening to us! Besides, Saint's Row don't look all great to me. It looks too cartoonish and I'd still go back to GTA IV. Even GTA SA is better. Stop kidding yourself that a GTA clone like Saint's Row that's aimed at 9 year olds will be better than a GTA game.

GTA IV was a nice sequel that looked at a GTA game from a different perspective and let us do different things that we were bored of after 5 GTA games in the GTAIII era. Don't worry, the DLC will give it a good supplement.

In my opinion, Saint's Row 2 will sell well, but only to those 9-year-olds. I might get SRII, but it'll definitely not replace GTA IV or be better than it. Besides, that scene from the trailer (throwing somebody at an oncoming train) seem fake, after seeing Euphoria in GTA IV.

I don't like what the Saints Row guys do with their story or their characters, because they've all been so damn monotonous, but this looks like San Andreas with souped up graphics, and although the story will most likely suck ass, the free-roam aspect looks like it could be fun. Personally, I'd rather have these features implemented into GTA IV through the expansions, but I'll definitely give this a shot.

I'll always believe that GTA kicks other games asses on the whole scene of violent games. Even if there are more possibilities in Saints Row 2, I know, that GTA V will be better. By the way, SR2 looks worse than GTA IV.

It looks much more fun than GTA4.

Unless the next GTA game brings back everything San Andreas had and more, I think Saints Row could easily take over the spotlight.

wow, I thought it was just me before, not liking GTA4 ............ but it seems a lot of you now agree with me.

Rockstar ............. you stuffed up. GTA4 is BORING.

When us fans say we want realism, it means we want realism in physics and graphics ...... and thats only so things look far cooler when we blow them up by doing extraordinary things (the things you guys left out of GTA4).
We dont want the game to be life realistic.

i'm getting saint's row 2, and i still like GTA IV, but i thought saint's row 1 was a bit of a let down. Maybe in Saint's Row 2 they use the Euphoria (RAGE) engine like Rockstar did. If Rockstar don't change GTA to something like GTA3, VC & SA, i won't get GTA 5!

Looks fun.

Hell, looks amazing.

But I don't think it means its any better than GTA IV. It all depends on what you're looking for in a game. This looks fun, but whose to say that all these super fun activities weren't poorly done like all the "super fun" activities from San Andreas?

Either way, I'll end up playing both GTA IV and this, switching back and forth based on what mood I'm in.

The same argument this trailer made could be made for the Sims. But that doesn't mean it's any worse of a game.

It's all about perspective. And when it comes to gaming, I try to be as open-minded as possible.

Which is why SR2, GTA IV, and MGS4 among other things are all on my list of must-buys when I get my PS3.

I mean, I love how you guys flip flop back and forth between your loyalties to various game companies like typical Plebians.

First you complain about San Andreas' lack of realism and all of its over-the-top wacky features. But the second GTA IV comes out, the first thing you complain about was how realistic it was.

Which do you want?
I say I want a little of both.

@alisdairmac, Euphoria and RAGE are two totally different things dude.

Euphoria is a middleware physics engine that Rockstar purchased for use from naturalmotion. RAGE is rockstar's graphics engine.

Either way, I don't think SR2 will be using euphoria. Judging from that trailer, all I saw was typical ragdoll physics.

I'd rather play a game that doesn't look like it was designed for a PS2.

GTA IV is fun for some realistic mayhem, and I admit it does lose it's appeal after a while. But I wasn't too enamored with the original Saint's Row, and now they're playing the dick-swinging game. I'll wait for Mercenaries 2 kthx.

GTA 4 still looks like it is better IMO put SR2 looks better than I ever though it could be. I think who ever came up with that ad should get a raise, because that is the best way to sell it, instead of doing the typical "we are just like GTA" they did they "You can't do this on GTA but you can do it here."

Not sure it sold me on the game, but for the first time I am at a maybe.

Ooh, THQ Shoots at Rockstar. Big Woop. They use the GTA font, take some things out of the game ex. Bowling etc. The physics on SRII looks like shit. Ragdoll, shit.
Graphics, Shit. Gameplay, Looks Shit. I saw on an ad a cop chokeslam a women... Lucky that you can't do that in IV huh. Ooh it'd be so fun.

It's weird how people use the term "sandbox game" here. I believe sandbox game just means a game that is open and free (opposed to the linear levels of a game like Super Mario Bros.) Sandbox doesn't mean a shooter or violent. I think you could probably clasify the Zelda games as sandbox.

GTA IV is to serious. Its harder to go out and cause chaos when you can only carry 8 rounds for the rpg. San Andreas let you start WW3, and from the looks of it, so will Saints Row.

As opposed to what in GTA? The myriad of cool shit you can do once you beat the story? Don't even bring up the half-assed multiplayer.

And yeah, MGS4 is going to really mean even less people playing GTA on the PS3. Less than a week now. Very psyched.

jeez, Fan moan about wanting the game to be real, Rockstar give us a game that's more realistic and serious and gritty and yet people still complain, you guys are shallow, just because this game isn't fucking San Andreas you dis the game and the company and jump ship right away, where's the fucking loyality, I bet most of you haven't even played GTA before GTA3 and think San Andreas is the best supreme ever.

I would have liked GTA IV more if it had a better story. Niko isn't a really good gaming character, the story feels sloppy... they've done a much better job when they used films as inspirations and it doesn't seem like they're now able to do their own kind of stuff.

Alright, let's just think about that trailer for a moment. Do you know what it's like? It's like comparing movie trailers for something like The Departed, and something like You Don't Mess With The Zohan. Grand Theft Auto IV is an epic crime saga type of game, and the seriousness puts it in the league of some of the greatest games ever made. Saints Row 2 is a game that is totally unrealistic and stupid, with absolute shit graphics, which is basically throwing in random things to direct your attention away from from the obviously crappy story and boring characters.

I mean, look at and listen to that trailer. It reminds me of a beer commercial; appealing to one demographic, using the most stereotypical lines possible and trying to make itself seem like it's "manly". If anyone on here honestly thinks that this game is going to be better than Grand Theft Auto IV, that's fine. You can continue with those thoughts and your job of flipping burgers at the local McDonald's.

also....what does someones occupation have anything to do with their ideas on video games.......

if you must blame someones opion on their occupation.....that only proves my point more......

my point: that gta IV is boring after so long......and the fun that used to be GTA needs to be returned........just like Saints Row is doing.....

This is what Rockstar deserves for thinking graphics are enough to impress us.
We always knew that GTA doesn't look great but its a lot of fun.On GTA4 it was great graphics, but most of the fun things were gone.

I can no longer fly a plane, ride a bicicle, stand in my feet while im driving a motorcicle, i can no longer dive in the water or have a rocket to explore the map the way i want to.I only have 2 sets of weapons instead of 3 like in previous versions. We can't modify our cars nomore, cars can't fly nomore. The missions are ALL ABOUT SHOOTING while fun parts like racing or driving an RC helicopter are out.Racing is stil there but its just a side mission, has nothing to do with the game.

U no longer feel like you are building your way to the top while u play it.The beginning of the game feels good, but once u realise all the missions are about going from A to B and killing all the guys witht he same weapon, u get really bored.

I can no longer get an old truck and drive on the country side as fast as the truck can go(that was really fun to me).All i can do now is take a car, hit the gas until the first stop where i will certainly hit another car and i will certainly get chased by the police.

Also does anyone have the impression like its nighttime all the time in GTA4? Even if it's daytime it stil feels like night. It's crazy.

Sorry Rockstar, but removing all the fun part in our game and replacing them with good graphics and the ability to take a cab from A to B is just not good enough.

Are you guys kidding me, sure gta 4 doesnt have lots of activities to do like back in san andreas. but this game looks like junk. Sure you can do lots of things but that doesnt mean itll be fun doing them. i mean have you guys seen pics from this game?. looks like utter garbage. take a look:
http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/882586/saints-row-2/images/saints-row-2-20080416003655337.html

In my previous post I said to take notes simply because I think Rockstar should add a lot back into the game next time around. I'm sure they're seeing what people wanted and are sorry they took a lot of things out.

As for SR2, I played the demo of the first one and it seemed like a really gangsta life ripoff of GTA. I've always been open to other companies sandbox games and I've played a few that I liked. But you gotta show respect for the one that started it all - Grand Theft Auto!

Look again at the trailer for SR2. Those activities are amusing at first, but how quick will the novelty of a lot of those things wear off? Imagine doing those things over and over. That would get boring to me.

That game looks like fun, but was the other one like that or did they just rip off a bunch of GTA ideas...?

All the activites seem more of a novelty and I doubt the storyline or overall gameplay will be anywhere near the quality of GTA IV, San Andreas or any previous GTA for that matter.

I'm not going to jump over to the Saint's Row side because of one flashy trailer that relies on a funny voice-over saying it's better than GTA IV.

GTA has provided me with hours and hours of gaming for many years and will continue to do so long after hype for games like SR II dies down.

Oh, and I think it's funny how people go "SR2's graphics look like garbage!". I take it that graphics mean more to you then? Hmm, what a shame.

The graphics look actually worse than the first one. They seem to think Next Gen means smooth and shiny. :/ Not impressed in the slightest.

First, sorry for the long post, but this gave me a lot of thoughts.

I really am not a fan of this sort of adversarial marketing. Let's be completely honest here. Maybe you were a bit disappointed in GTA IV; maybe you loved it. The fact remains, irrespective of these issues, that it is arguably the highest rated game of all time and the best selling game of all time. Rumors have surfaced that it actually harmed the profits of the Iron Man movie. I would think that the makers of Saint's Row could have a little more respect for their fellow game developers.

Saint's Row 2 looks fun, and I'm sure I'll get it, enjoy it, and many others will as well. But it looks like the SR2 developers are trying to make this game go in a completely different direction than the direction in which Rockstar tried to push GTA IV. One of the reasons GTA IV was lavished with so many perfect scores is _because_ of all those activities where you hang out with friends and build relationships. Never before in a game has there been such character development and a real, substantial story to be told. I'd say every gamer in the world will soon know the name of Niko Bellic. How many know the protagonist in the original Saint's Row? I played that game and I have no clue. It left no impression on me. I don't remember the story or anything. But I doubt I'll ever forget the story and characters in GTA IV. How could you forget Brucie and his obsession with his abs or Francis McReary, the crooked cop who wants desperately to be a good guy but who just keeps making "mistake" after "mistake"? I'd go on, but I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't finished the story.

Further, this notion that gamers universally prefer blowing things up to minigames like bowling with friends is clearly false. Need I even mention The Sims?

Saints Row 2 didn't look that interesting to me from the previous trailers and screenshots, but this trailer totally kicks the crap out of the realism in GTA 4! lol lets hope the storyline is as good as the features.

I bought SR 1, sorry i'm not making the same mistake again.

Love when people say SR is not a GTA clone, but then they make a freakin trailer comparing both franchises.

At least they should be humble and pay some respect, without GTA there would be no Saints Row.

The reviewers were in hype denial when they reviewed GTA4. It got boring after 2 weeks and the multiplayer was ****. I don't think R* realized why people even liked SA and the games before it. They'll hopefully notice after this...

I miss my flamethrower chainsaw and mini-gun in GTA IV I also miss my gore and my excessive blood.

I can't ever recall complaining that San Andreas wasn't realistic enough, just that the planes and copters were a pain to control sometimes (although worth it when you finally got the hang of it) that the graphics stunk, there were too many empty useless buildings and that's about it.

I love games that are really over the top (if done well), and I pray that twisted metal won't be following the current trend of 'Gritty Realism'(tm).

It looks like Saints Row 2 might fill the needed void of over the top wackiness. Although taking potshots at the competition is always funny.

I agree with Ash a little bit.

But I ain't one of those guys. GTA IV was hella awesome. And I have played all the GTA from GTA 2 to GTA 4. GTA IV had all those cool things, but could've had so much more. I still would kiss the feet of every Rockstar Games employee. Maybe the DLC comin' in the holidays will hold some more fun stuff, not just story-like missions. Or hopefully the next GTA game will push the game further in content and gameplay (MORE FUN).

I gotta say, San Andreas I sill play quite occasionally and that game was released 4 years ago. I am a little bored of GTA IV with it's story done and a little lack of time-lasting side missions.

Oh, and f*** yeah that Saint's Row is a GTA clone, but it's still hella fun.

I never said I didn't like IV. I'm just saying that, I, like many fans that feel that the activities seen in the SR2 trailer should have been in IV. I personally have played all the GTA titles and have enjoyed them all for different reasons. I was hoping with new consoles and so much lead tome there would have been more to IV. It was natural after SA to hope for more. I get why, and respect R*'s decision to go another route with the series. I still play IV and will continue to do so, it IS a GREAT game.

I don't care who invented the sandbox genre in the first place. I just want the best game. I played Saints Row 1 a little bit, and it was crap to me. Saints Row 2 looks amazing though. GTA4 looked amazing (And as far as looks go, it still does), but the longeviety of it dragged it way down for me. And the story wasn't very good after opening up Algonquin. It became lame. Saints Row 2 looks like a lot of fun and I'll be looking forward to playing it. I just have doubts how good it is, because GTA4 also looked like the best game ever, BEFORE it came out. On a list of GTA games it only reaches #4 or#5 for me today.

Bring on Saints Row 2. I hope this will provide the push Rockstar needs. GTA5 will probably be a lot better than GTA4.

SR2 looks good, but there is no chance in hell that it will be anywhere near the succes of GTA IV. In this trailer, SR2 are only comparing the side stuff. They are not even comparing the games in general, were GTA IV is clearly winning and surely is one of the best games ever. In GTA IV, it's fun just to cruise around the city and do random stuff, wich was very boring in SR1.

You people should complain some more. Aw, you're angwy because Rockstar didn't put everything you want in the game.

GTA IV is an amazing game with love brimming at every digital seam, I'm just sorry that, most, of you people can't see that.

I'm on my seventh play-through and I still marvel at some of the little things, and many of the big ones.

Saints Row was lacking and felt like a digital, lifeless world at every possible chance. Honestly, some of the ways of earning money in that game just made me laugh at how stupid it was. Insurance fraud by throwing yourself in front of a car, are you joking me?

Saints Row 2 will, doubtless, bring anything new or exciting to the table. Besides rehashing and throwing a fresh coat of paint on countless Grand Theft Auto ideas, I'm sure you won't see much of anything new.

So nice to see so many people still coming back to a Grand Theft Auto themed site especially since it is, mostly, centered around the one that most of you seem to hate the most, IV. You people need something better to do with your time.

PEOPLE, are you crazy? GTA is the best and unique game! And now you are saying that some Saints row game is better than the almighty GTA4.
I don't understand what's going on. It is the most realistic and the most interesting game in the world. If you want violence - you just make it, if you want to live like a good citizen you live like one - it's GTA, it's freedom. And I love that gta became SO realistic!
I bet SR2 would be one of those trashy games lol)

SR2 looks alright in theory, and I'm sure it'll have its fans, but I HATED SR1. Sure, it looked like GTA, had similar missions to GTA, and had a similar story to GTA, but it was like a bad ripoff based on screenshots and reviews. It had none of the quality, none of the charisma, and most of all it had none of the fun!

I'm not expecting SR2 to be much better, but you never can tell. I'll wait for the reviews.
