Achievement Unlocked: Score $500m at retail

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 10:11 AM MDT | By Neil
MoniesIt's Take Two's time to blow their own trumpet today, and the company has announced that around six million copies of GTA IV were sold during its first week on sale with around 3.6 million of those being flogged on the first day. These figures mean that the game is said to have grossed $500m to date (indicating that the average price paid for a copy was $83 worldwide across both standard and special editions).

It's worth remembering that in this day of hurrah, the revenue breakdown for a video game is vastly different to that of a movie. Chairman Strauss Zelnick has said that he believes that these sales figures "surpass any movie or music launch to date". However, in the case of many games, a cut of 20% (or more) of a game's cover price for retailers is not unheard of. Of course, these figures are always a closely guarded secret. Subtracting the game's estimated $100m development cost still leaves a healthy sum for Take Two though.

Also today, Microsoft announced that over 31 million hours of play had been racked up on the Xbox 360 version to date, with 9.7 million hours of play in the game's "seamless" Xbox Live multiplayer mode. Microsoft also reminds us of the exclusive episodes which are coming to Xbox Live this fall by claiming they'll provide "hours of additional gameplay".

It's cursed money.

If I was Take-Two I would burn the kitten, just to be sure the curse is lifted from my cash.

I break internet rules for a living.

I'm super cool edgy like that.

Okay time for a serious comment before someone takes my jokes for real and bans me so, here comes the serious comment: Congratulations Take-Two, give us some of your fucking money.
(We can't swear on a GTA fan site? Oh the irony....)

Actually I'll take that censor out one of these days. It was mainly because unregistered users had the ability to post to post back in the day, and they'd post really vulgar nasty comments to everyone, but now that you have to be registered, we can just ban you for that :D

But anyway, these sales don't really come as a surprise to me. Everyone (and their mothers) was hyped up for GTA IV, so it was expected!
