Release date broken by some UK retailers

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 05:16 PM MDT | By Neil
Australian gamers have now been joined by those from the United Kingdom in the GTA release date rush. Pictures of the game appeared earlier in the week, and pressure from customers has led some independent retailers to succumb and offer the game ahead of its April 29th street date.

Online messageboards are filled with stories of various small stores offering both versions of the game early, with many charging 45 or even 50. More surprisingly, major supermarkets also seem to be in, several images like this one providing forum goers with information on where might be the best place to grab the game ahead of time.

ASDA claims that this was an "isolated incident", while other gamers managed to get the title from Morrisons.

At the time of writing, statistics tracking website listed over 1000 players of the Xbox 360 version so far.

And that is over 1,000 banned gamertags. I mean first it's just random people with early copies leaking the game, but now retailers are actually selling it early? Well I cannot imagine Rockstar doing business with these kinds of people again.

Microsoft can't do anything about people playing the game early. They may be able to detect mod chips, but banning people who have paid money legitimately for a game is something which they simply won't do.

It seems at the moment that if Rockstar cut out all the retailers who are selling it early, they'd have very few shops left in the UK to sell their games next time :)

Who is really surprised, though?? For a game with such HYPE, one of Rockstar's biggest mistakes HAS to be shipping the game when they did. If they had waited until today or even TOMORROW I think the amount of people playing this game right now would be

Well consider this, how big of a mistake would it have been to ship the day before it comes out (I know at least Game Stop doesn't receive shipments on weekends) and then deliveries get messed up and some stores don't get it and then people who were expecting to pick up their copy on release day get screwed over? It's actually better to ship it early and take the risk of a leak than to ship late and risk a messed up launch with thousands of disappointed fans.

This is just sad, sad news.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised at retailers wanting to make a quick buck, but to those who sold it early for the same price which everyone will be paying for in 3 days time... whats the point?

I hope anyone who goes online with the pirated versions gets banned...and any store caught selling the game early should lose the right to sell GTA's in the future.

the people who bought are 100% not to blame, its the store, so im my opinion i dont believe the person should be punished but the store who sold it should be. Think if you just bought your PS3 or xbox i guess and didnt know anything about it, you see this game on the shelf and your like looks sweet so you buy it with you console, go home to play it on the internet, in the 360 case after you pay for internet you all of a sudden get banned from online play. its not your fault, its who sold it to you. you thought you were being legit.

sorry im 10 beer deep. its 5 oclock somewhere right, i hate country music lol

Rockstar Games should not make business with these retailers again. Almost 4 years of waiting, drawing to a close.
