GTA IV New Info

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 01:55 PM CST | By cyrix
Here are the updated details to the May Game Informer preview:
* The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic. (Likely to be Crotian in origin)
* Niko was persuaded to move to Liberty City by his cousin Roman, who claimed to be living a wonderful life there with two beautiful women, fifteen sports cars, and lots of money etc, but he was infact telling a lie in order to hide his own failures. Roman is the only person you know in Liberty City at the beginning of the game, and he becomes one of your major connections at the start. Niko is a tough character whereas Roman is friendly. Roman is heavily in debt and a lot of people are after him - he needs Niko's support. They are constantly bickering.
* Variations in the terrain cause realistic changes in the walking animation of Niko. The physics have also improved and character movements are more realistic.
* Multiplayer will exist, but it will be something that coincides with single-player and will not be an MMO.
* The MetLife building now bears the name Getalife, the Statue of Liberty is now the Statue of Happiness, and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is called BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass).
* In Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar have recreated 4 of the 5 boroughs in New York, as well as part of New Jersey. Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney.
* There is only one city. There may be motorcycles, but there will be no planes, rollerblades or unicycles, and I wouldn't expect jetpacks or Harriers. Rockstar wants the city to feel realistic and fit the style of the character.
* The city is almost as large as San Andreas, but will not have any useless space like countryside or desert. Every space will be cram-packed with detail.
* The city will be highly contrasted between daytime and nighttime.
* Freedom is emphasized. You continue to take orders from mission givers, but you are not forced to spend your time being a slave to them. You can go see who you want to, practically when you want to. You just call someone up and see if they are available.
* The story unfolds in a number of different ways. R* is giving people more freedom, more choice and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of the storyline is quite different to previous games.
* Contacts will be called from your cell phone. Its LCD screen has options for Phonebook, Messages, Organizer and Camera. Niko's Phonebook has options such as: City Contact, Docks Friend, and Cab Contact. The cell phone will allow the player to call contacts instead of meeting them in person, which should make the player feel more independent.
* Game Informer playtested the Xbox 360 version. It is to be identical to the PS3 version except for episodic content.
* The voice talent for GTA IV will be less big names and more suited to the characters. The soundtrack will also be geared more towards the feel of the city and less focused on big names.
* The game will load once and then never again, and not even during interior transitions.
* It is implied that there will be greater emphasis on pedestrian AI, and they will come with all sorts of temperaments. They will also be seen doing realistic things like smoking a cigarette, reading a book, sitting on a bench, etc.
* You will also see a lot more of pedestrian criminals being arrested by the police.
* Rockstar have now spent over 3 years developing the game, and Dan Houser compares the leap from GTA III to GTA IV, to the leap from GTA to GTA III.

Special thanks: Demologik, GTA Network

The article has some gorgeous city pan shots and more closeups of Niko. Rockstar insists that the screenshots will only look better nearing release. Remember to pick up the May issue of GI for the entire article, and as always feel free to discuss this and all things GTA related in the GTAGaming forums.

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to think this could be a step back for the series rather than a step forward. Since when did Rockstar decide to remove features? The thing that excited me about the GTA games when they were first previewed was all the new stuff you could do.

I won't jump to conclusions yet and I'll wait until I get a copy of GI for myself. But things aren't shaping up as well in my opinion. :/

This is all thanks to the stupid 4GB DVD drive of the Xbox 360. This game could had been WAY better if it should had stayed on the 50GB Blu-Ray Drive of the PS3.

Thank You Xbox 360 for ruining what could had been the best game of all time.

Thank you random newbie for a stupid comment from another patetic PS3-fanboy, if they have problem with the size they can comprimize enough for a new GTA.

Nothing was said about leaving helicopters out of the game, at least we will all have some form of air transportation.

When I read this earlier I was kinda like, 'meh', but the update has made it sound a lot better. Knowing the city will be almost San An's size is reassuring.

I agree, LM. The first part had me a little disappointed but the updated bit seems much more exciting. If the city really is about the size of San Andreas, it would be great.

@Evil_Homer: The game was going to be PS3 timed exclusive in order for Rockstar to take more advantage of Blu-Ray, but Microsoft came out and paid Take-Two A LOT of money to get it on the 360 the same day as the PS3 release. It's not really going to ruin the game, but as with all third party titles there's a lot of untapped resources being ignored that only the PS3 can offer right now.

Where did I get it? Let's see... maybe just about every news source that covered E3 last year as well as earlier interviews with Rockstar before E3. You're sorely mistaken if you think I come on here just to make up statistics that most people already know about. :/

In response to Piggus' first comment about GTA taking a step back, I think they have to. GTA IV will be the first one for the next-gen consoles and if Rockstar expends all their energy on this game, they'll have no new features for future GTAs. And thats what Rockstar is probably focusing on - the innovations in the next several future GTA games.

Uh-oh this isnt looking good, I had a feeling they were gonna hack back on previous features. R* just take your time - please! Put back the release date, and listen to your fans. Sad buggers like myself used to like cruzsing through the country side and flying planes. What's the bet that the gym has disappeared too... What a set back :( I'm just hoping that the info there was to just keep us on our toes

Yea im upset about no planes and such but they kinda have a point because of what happend 9/11 and that would just make another law suite and most people hate the game because the violence and all and if planes were to happend i bet that rockstar will b in big problems and that goes for the next future gta games!! But dont get me wrong im as upset as every 1 here about all the features they took out its jus dumb that they had to make it in NY because if it were a different place planes and all would be allowed!! but im jus hoping the game is good and beats every other gta game out! maybe...... maybe not no one really knows everything Rockstar has up thier sleeves this is jus my opinion but no planes and etc.. suks and i was looking foward to making a new character!!

This is fucking bull-shit, just because GTA is big and everyone will buy it, it doesn't give rockstar the right to take out airplanes. Thats to fucking much, almost as worse as going back to top down. We need to start a petition, its not to late in the developement to add air planes. Fucking rockstar.

Am I the only one who likes a more realistic game? No planes just means you have to get around the city like a normal person: on foot or by car. Hopefully, since it is now just one city, it will be incredibly more detailed and have more usable space (enter any building and no boring countryside).

Personally, I didn't like San Andreas because it took forever to get anywhere. I'd rather have more things to do in less space than more places to go with nothing to do.

dkfailing- I agree with you cuz i kno im siked to play this game and im not that bumed about the planes cuz even if there are planes this is NY since when do planes fly around NY's Buildings? people wouldnt have any space to fly !!!! I just want to see how crazy this games grafics are going to b compared to any other gta game cuz truthfully not only PLANES make the game beacuse every one liked vice city and Gta III and it didnt involve planes so y get mad now!!!

Because! I loved how you could fly harries and shoot missles in neighborhoods. That is what defines true grand theft auto. Sam houser needs to be kicked in the balls for doing that. -- Ok picture this, umm intercorse with a women.. What if the women was bald? That is feature needed on every girl, and it just won't work if she is bald! Thats what they did to gta 4, no plains means a giant part of the games excitement gone... I might even buy it, I might rent it..

As La Maravilla said, the other games didn't have flight (with minimal exceptions). Perhaps "no planes" might leave room for those exceptions as well. But lack of planes certainly isn't the end of what this franchise has been known for giving us.

With updated graphics, realistic environments, AI interactions, and physics, enhanced storyline, and music, perhaps we will forget about the little things that are left out and be able to explore mayhem on a completely different level. I understand that those little things are important. But IMO, this game has always meant the ability to vent some frustration. I can do that by pulling out the old chain gun as easily as by dropping missiles.

Dude, don't you think its a down grade? I don't care how much realistic it is, it could look like GTA 3 for all I care.. They took out a feature that made San andreas really great.. We should boycott them until they put that feature back, ok listen to this.. In real life anyone could high jack a harrier and blast neighboorhoods, you might get killed but you can still do so. How realistic is this game if they do that? Rockstar needs to put back the planes, and jetpack...

Hmm it seems that a game can become a little too realistic. I live a normal life, which is... well - as realistic as it gets. When I play GTA, I want to fly planes, jump out of them and parachute down, gamble, go to the gym (in-game!!!) I want to do things that I cant, or am too lazy to do in real life. I suppose that this is a controversial comment, as at the same time in SA, I loved the realism of being able to explore a whole state, with water and country inbetween cities. When I was in San Fierro, I sometimes thought, 'I wonder what's going on in Los Santos' (even though I understood it's a game, of course) lol!

I posted about this on a forum and got lots of hate replys like 'dont buy the game then' blah blah blah, and to be honest, I'm not going to this time round. I've never been one for a 'realistic' game, and especially a 'realistic' GTA. San Andreas was absolutely awesome, and that's where my GTA experience will end. I might even start it again - it's been a while! I must say, with the exception of WoW, GTA:SA is still my most enjoyed game.

Who knows, as we progress towards the release date, secrets may unfold etc!

I would agree it's a downgrade if that were the whole story. But taking out planes and adding other things is perfectly fine with me.

The beauty of these games lies, in part, with the ability to pop in Vice City and play a certain flavor of GTA and switch, at any moment, to San Andreas with its completely new style. I hope IV will be unique in many different ways. If I ever have the hankering to blow things up with planes, I'll play San Andreas. If I want to listen to the greatest 80's tunes while massacring people, I'll play Vice City. Undoubtedly, this game will provide us with another taste of the GTA world.

Revanx, you couldn't hijack a harrier, because:

1. You'd be shot
2. You couldn't start a harrier up, because of the complications involved.

Nobody in NYC would own a jetpack either...
