PlayStation Portable now available in North America

GTAGaming.com - General News | @ 03:51 AM MDT | By Neil
The launch of one of the most important pieces of gaming hardware ever took place earlier this morning. Some of you may have noticed the poll we've been running on the site all week, and it seems that PSP might not be in for the easy ride 'Stateside that many had predicted. Just 27% of those who took the time to respond will be buying a PSP today, and looking at my own research, it seems that very few people actually know that PSP is available today.

Well, the good news is that gamers all across North America can now get their hands on a PlayStation Portable Value Pack for a SRP of $249, which includes the console itself, a 32mb memory stick, soft case, cleaning cloth and earphones. You'll also get a full length UMD version of the movie Spider-Man 2. A wealth of good quality launch titles are available, including Ridge Racer, Tony Hawk's Underground 2: Remix and the bizarre trading card game Metal Gear: Acid.

With an extremely good looking catalogue of games to come, including Gran Turismo 4 and an all new Grand Theft Auto title, PSP seems like it has the strength to be a contender in the handheld market.

Unfortunately, the same pretty picture cannot be painted of Europe, where Sony has stated the launch is a number of months away, but has yet to set a firm date. Current indications suggest July as a release month, but these are purely speculative. When it does arrive, expect to be paying a premium price, UK gamers should expect to pay no less than £180 ($350US) for the console.

Those of you lucky enough to live in North America who have $250 burning a hole in their pocket would be well advised to get down to their nearest retailer and pick up PSP, if you don't do it today, you will do it in the future!

I got my PSP last night at Wal-Mart and i must say, The PSP rocks like no other. man this thing is your muiltimedia station and nothing can replace it. It may be pricey but the darn thing is too good to wait for until it lowers down in price, and god knows when that'll be.

Sure is sweet looking, maybe the price will come down a while after GTA Liberty Citys sales slow down. It could be a year before I get one, then.

Why is there such a big price gap between the US and Europe prices ($250 compared yo $350!). It seems a bit unfair! If anything they should reduce the price especially since it has been delayed!

it may have a lot of awesome features, but the price is astronomical. it has the same price the ps2 initially had.

I heard that the square button didn't work to well or something. Can anyone confirm this? It was on gamespot when they released it in Japan, but i dont know if the U.S psp has the same problem.

For that price, I'd rather just save up for a next-gen console, XBox 360 should be here by the end of the year...

I'd like to buy it, but I'll wait for the price to drop. I don't really have to have one. It is a bit pricey and no disrespect to Neil, but the MP3 and Movie/Picture capabilities aren't worth the hype. However, the tech and gameplay capabilties compared to any other handheld are supreme. I've read numerous reviews that the gameplay is really the only thing worth paying for because you can hardly store any music or personal movies/pics on the small 32MB card. There are upgradable cards I think and if not they will be available in the near future, but I hear those are also a bit pricey.

I'm of the opinion that $249 is an excellent price to pay for this piece of kit. Look at what Apple are asking for an iPod and consider that this device can do a whole lot more.

I'll stick to my iPod for music though, the interface for switching songs quickly is quite quirky. I'm sure plenty of you were sucked in by the cute little wheel.

I really dig the new PSP, and i'm sure i would of bought it, but i just purched a new PC Sony Vaio and i'll stick with it for a while. Maybe i'll buy it when GTA comes out for the PSP. Other then that PSP is the best handheld system in the market right now.IMO

I bought PSP value pack yesterday, I was too excited to open it for awhile. Even the sampler umd is really awesome, full length movie trailers and game demos. I watched the complete Spiderman 2 movie sitting and eating in Red Lobster this afternoon LOL. I just played Ridge Racer for the first time about 20 minutes ago... nice game. The PSP really jumps out at you, the screen is huge, its exciting to play games.

Not very many people have dead pixels. And if they do, Sony said they would replace their screen. None of my friends or I have any problem at all with the PSP.

I agree with Neil. $250 is an exelent price. When you first turn this thing on, it feels like you are robbing Sony blind.

Yeah, I know wat u mean Piggus. I just got one today. It's awsome! Can't wait for GTA PSP. I bought Twisted Metal and put music on the Duo Stick. Also, I watched Spider Man 2 several times. This thing is mind blowing. Best $250 I've ever spent on electronics. Aw, shit, my battery just died. That's how much I've been using it, 3rd time charged too. Oh, ironicly, I've got Franz Ferdinad's Take Me Out song on here, which is the song they use for the PSP commercials.

its more like 275 bucks with tax. plus the games are 40 or 50 bucks. the GTA game will be 50 bucks premium price for a great game. The san andreas pc version will only be on DVD-ROM, not CD-ROM, just so you know..... only about 2 more months or so. I heard a storyline for the GTA PSP game.... Tommy Vercetti in Liberty City in the 1970's with Sonny Forelli, a pre vice city game... sounds cool.

I decided against the PSP and got the nintendo DS and im glad. id love 2 have a PSP but my god its soooo expensive compared 2 the DS, and u got luv the touch screen over the PSP widescreen and whats the point of a 32mb memoeey stick. Sony have made a good bit of kit here but i say leave the hand held market 2 the proffessionals Nintendo.
