PStwo Confirmed, Nintendo DS Dated, Priced.

GTAGaming.com - General News | @ 07:31 AM CST | By Neil
Sony today confirmed the PStwo will launch on November 1st, 2004 in North America, Europe and Oceania, at a price of $149/149/104.99. The new console is substantially smaller than the original, weighing half, with internal volume reduced by 75%. A network port is also included, making the network adapter obsolete for the new machine. No mention is made of any bundles, but speculation that the GTA: San Andreas release date had been pushed back to allow the console to be marketed alongside it is still rife. The slim machine will be showcased at this week's Tokyo Game Show.

PStwo imagery:

Meanwhile, Nintendo have announced pricing and release dates for their forthcoming handheld, the Nintendo DS. The console is capable of playing all Game Boy Advance cartidges, including Grand Theft Auto: Advance. US gamers can get their hands on one from November 21st, priced $149.99. European fans will have to wait until early 2005 to enjoy the splendour of dual screen gaming on the move. Perhaps it's worth waiting a few weeks to play GTA: Advance on this beauty instead of forking out for a GBA: SP?

Nintendo also released new imagery of the handheld, which is to include a built in version of PictoChat:

Who would buy the DS for $149 when the pstwo is the extact same price. That's like buying a Pentium 2 for $200 when you can buy a 2Ghz computer for the same price. WTF is all i have to say.

#4, can you hold the PStwo in your hands and play it? Thought not. Even at the new size, it isnt a handheld/portable machine. That's why people will buy DS.

I don't get it. What's the point of making a slimmer PS2?

Is it some kind of really weak stop-gap measure between PS2 and PS3? Does it do anything new? Does it do what it did before any differently? Does it just cost Sony less money to produce?

I currently don't have a PS2 of my own so I would have to buy one. I was planning on buying a used one for $100 to $125. I'd plunk down $149 for a new unit though, as long as I don't have to sacrifice any performance or reliability. If Sony just cheaped up the components to make PSTwo then I'd rather get a used PS2.

I forgot to mention, it's just an updated design, to appeal to the market. The only new feature here is the built in network port, which allows you to play online without buying a seperate adapter.

This PS2 will play games just as well as any other PS2

#17- Lacking a fan? Won't that mean that it will overheat and just short out after a couple hours?

ok the thing i dont get is why the PStwo is the same price as the original. When the PSone was released, i thought the point was it was smaller AND cheaper.

The DS will be great because its dual screen design will allow for more innovative and interesting games. One screen is touch sensetive that is controlled with a handheld stylus, imagine playing RPGs where the menus are one screen and all the action on another. Or RTSs where all you have to do to move units is use the stylus. Not to mention all the neat stuff Nintendo is coming up with for games in the future. It also features Wi-Fi lan support so you can play multiplayer with people without any cords or wires.

The PSP, while more powerful, doesn't really appeal to me. It can play DVDs yeah, but I already have a DVD player, quite a few actually. And why play PS1 quality games when I can play better quality games on my PS2? That, and the PSPs battery life will probably be much shorter than the DSs.

As for this PStwo business, well, eh. I don't really care about it, my PS2 still works fine. But if it ever breaks down I might get a PStwo.

It stinks! It stinks! It stinks!

I'm probably the most pro-sony person around. But I'm going to buy the DS because the GBA was extremely fun. But I'm also gonna buy a PSP, because there is so much on there its mind boogling. But still, the DS will still make great games and be fun nonetheless.

I heard that the PSP only has a battery life of 2.5 hours...

DS looks more like a gimmick to me...and we all know how the LAST gimmick ended up

COUGHvirtualboyCOUGH

PSTwo...like I said...it looks cool...but I would not buy it unless I needed a new PS2 or something...and its HDD support worries me (even though I dont use HDD)

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), announced today that it had begun preparations to adopt Blu-ray Disc ROM(BD-ROM) format as a medium for the next generation PlayStation(R), the successor system to PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system.

Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a next generation high-density optical disc format

that enables recording and playback of digital high-definition (HD) video

signals and programs. BD-ROM format has a huge memory size of 54 GB (dual layer, single side), which is 6 times larger than that of DVD-ROM, and has the potential of becoming an ideal medium to distribute next generation entertainment content from movies and music to computer applications.

Hmmmm , I thought the new handheld playstation from sony is meant to be able to do ps2 graphics @switch

also it's cooler having the big ps2. the new 1 looks kinda lame and uncool. The bigger the better :D (when it comes to consoles) ps2 is perfect size i think , stands up nicely and proud next to your tv or so on. don't waste your money ont he new one, Get a used xbox instead.

I'm clearing this up, once and for all!

PStwo is the same price as the old PS2, and will replace them in all stores. You will not be able to buy an old style PS2 from later this year. It's simply a model update, incorporating the network adapter.

THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER DELAYS TO SAN ANDREAS

Nintendo DS is NOT in direct competition with PS2. It is a handheld console, designed for gaming on the move, while PS2 requires a TV or monitor, making it far less portable. The reason people would buy a Nintendo DS are obvious, it's the true successor to the Game Boy. If you travel a lot, you can take it with you and play games on the move.

Sony Playstation Portable is the handheld Playstation. A price for this has not been announced, although it is expected to retail at a much higher price than Nintendo DS.

Sony's PS3 console, which is expected to launch in Late 2005-Early 2006 will use Blu-Ray technology for its games, rather than DVDs. This allows a far greater level of storage on one disc.

I hope everyone understands now, and if you're still confused, reply and ASK!

Now that you have seen the PStwo, think, what will PS3 look like, maybe even slimmer, possibility of working on batteries (you never know), optional large TV screen (for moving people)... You might not buy the PStwo, but you WILL buy the PS3, it's only a matter of time!

I'd like a PStwo but I've got a regular one... it's like the Xbox, I don't want to buy it, but winning/getting it wouldn't bother me.

I'll buy it. This is going to be my Christmas present. When I sell my PS2 for $50 the price of the PSTwo won't be so bad. Also, I've always wanted to play online, but I was too lazy to go out and spend all that money for an adapter.
