PSA: Games for Windows Live closing down

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 06:30 PM MDT | By Ash_735

Still play Grand Theft Auto IV or Episodes from Liberty City multiplayer? Well we have some bad news for you guys, Microsoft is pulling the plug on their Games for Windows Live (GFWL) service, with the end date being July 1st, 2014. After this date, any games using Games for Windows Live that have not been patched or made the transition over to Steamworks or their own service will lose all online abilities, save games and DLC purchases, as well as any activations that were required through Games for Windows Live services.

What does this mean? Well Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City currently have no plans to be patched or transitioned, therefore come July 1st, 2014, multiplayer for these games will effectively be killed outright and for those of you who purchased The Lost and Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony as DLC, will lose out on those DLC packages. The majority of people will lose access to the game completely and must chose to play without GFWL or use a plug in such as XLiveLess to bypass the Games for Windows Live shell (which at that point would be nothing more than bloatware).

What can we do? Nothing much I'm afraid, if you have purchased TLAD or TBOGT through GFWL as DLC then I'm afraid that's literally going to be money lost, if you wish to continue playing GTA IV or EFLC, then we recommend using XLiveLess, if you have your save games on GFWL then there are guides out there to help you reclaim these save files for offline use. As for multiplayer, we're afraid that will be simply dying out unless Rockstar decide to patch the game to either Steamworks or their own Social Club service.

Well some developers are transitioning their games to Steamworks, I know Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, BioShock 2 and Street Fighter IV (from Ultra onwards) are being patched and switched to Steamworks, but sadly Rockstar have not put Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City up for that.

I can't find any information on R* website about the IV multiplayer shutdown. I only found this that tells you that they are closing the PC marketplace.

@tjackiseN: Check gaming websites tomorrow, it's very recent news only just issued out, you'll be able to read more about it soon. The Marketplace closing down was the first step that's already been completed.

I can't help but see this as good news. Sure, it sucks that you'll have to jump through hoops to play IV, but at least you'll never be hassled by Games For Windows Live ever again.

I prefer to rather use their own Social Club service as it's much better!

July 2014 is so far away, I doubt you'll play alot of gta 4 online when they'll probably be close to a pc version of gta 5 at that time.

@tjackiseN: You can check it out on Polygon.

Btw, Social Club is tracking our achievements and multiplayer stats, and RGSC is responsible for all online elements in Max Payne 3 PC, so they could migrate everything to SC. They have to prepare Social Club servers, and that's all.

But, what will happen to GTA IV savegames? They are stored in the GFWL accounts. Mine's are in a offline account.

Remember when you could buy a game, safe in the knowledge that you could play it forever as long as you had the required hardware (or some way of emulating it)? I miss those days.
