Elders react to Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 04:25 PM MDT | By Ash_735
So there's a YouTube series called "Elders react to..." and each week this group of older people are shown a video of something popular and are then asked a few questions about it, and look at that, this weeks topic is Grand Theft Auto V. The wait is nearly over people, so let's take a look at something funny to pass the time over:

Many of us would probably like to just pass this off as a "bunch of old geezers" who have no idea about gaming. That is one acceptable view. However, as someone who is middle-aged (I'm in my 40s) I love GTA, and I've played video games for over 30 years. So, I have a unique perspective that many of the people represented in this video wouldn't quite understand.

I get why some of the comments here are funny. They make ME laugh too. But on the other hand, I understand where the commentary comes from. Those who say "this is bad for society" are simply expressing fear. The ones who are saying "hey -- this seems really cool, and I had never seen this before" are expressing open-mindedness. And those two opposing mindsets are not age-related. Young and old alike express the same views, albeit typically in different ways.

Instead of just writing off the ones who are complaining about the violence and gore, let's all remember that even those of us who love these games don't always enjoy killing pixels on a screen. I get angry like anyone else, and it feels good to be able to "blow up" an entire VIRTUAL city. But I also love seeing beautiful vistas and well-defined graphics depicting houses, cars, people, and city fixtures.

I disagree, by the way, with the supposed correlation between the on-screen violence and real violence. Video games are NOT VIOLENT. They DEPICT violent acts -- but unless you are mentally messed up, then these media offer outlets for your mind -- not "how-to" guides on any of this stuff.

I guess that what I'm saying is that it isn't what the experience brings to the person --

it's what the person brings to the experience.

Have fun, and we'll have even more of it on September 17.

I actually kinda like stuff like this. It shows a different perspective on the things we love.

It's also really interesting to me to see someone's reaction to something they've never been exposed to before. Like the one woman in blue who kept remarking on how realistic it looked, and how much there actually is to do. She seemed really impressed.

Of course they didn't all like it, but that's to be expected--but you notice, more seemed to be interested in it than not. So don't write it off.
