Grand Theft Auto IV is 5 Years Old

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 02:00 PM MDT | By Ash_735
Today Grand Theft Auto IV is FIVE years old! At the time it was the first proper Next Gen outing for the Grand Theft Auto Series appearing on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (and Grand Theft Auto V intends to end that era with a bang!) with a PC release arriving later in the year.

We've seen the modding scene grow to insane highs through our own and various other GTA websites, and that will only continue to grow as more tools become available, such as OpenIV which is still being updated to this day with a new release due out soon! With projects such as IV: SA and Iron Man IV, it should give you an idea of how much effort people can really put into their ideas and mods and how much it benefits from that attention. Here's to many more mods and projects to come!

With OVER 25 MILLION copies sold and trunk full of awards, Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the most successful GTA games around and yet is also one of the most argued about with many different opinions ranging from people thinking the game is too serious, lost its way, etc splitting some gaming communities in half with one side opting for Saints Row, which lead to one of the more creative response videos from the GTA Community, which only started off the zany direction many mods followed on with. And yes, you guys even followed trends such as Gangnam Style (even Gentlemen) and the Harlem Shake.

Of course it wasn't all just crazy videos and funny stuff, we also had genuine well made and edited videos such as the amazing "Niko Bellic - Man On Fire" tribute (and in my opinion, the better "Peace and Prosperity be Damned" tribute) so it feels fitting to highlight the next video, which shows a playthrough of all three stories at once, showing the events of the now well known "Impossible Trinity", the GTA IV Diamond Story Arc. So before we start with the Grand Theft Auto V stuff and go full out with it, here, watch this video, see what it's like to have Three Protagonists running through the story at the same time and see how diverse it can be as well as how fitting it is to have it follow multiple arcs between the characters...

Currently playing through it now.

Has aged fantastically in some way (the graphics/city still "wow" me) and not so great in others (sub-par facial animation in a lot of scenes).

Awesome game. Love it.

Bring on V.

You know, of all of GTA's protagonists, Nico is my favorite. I still remember how I felt as though I was sharing his pain throughout every mission that I completed.

Bellic is perhaps not the nicest, or the funniest, or the best at anything (like driving, flying, shooting, or any of the other skills commuted upon other GTA characters). But he is more human to me than all of them. And don't get me wrong -- I would prefer to play C.J., because he was way-more "fun." But there was something too cool about him, something that always bugged me -- and here's what it was:

I recall vividly completing the mission called "Burning Desire" from GTA San Andreas (spoiler alert, in case anyone cares...). When you save Desiree, C.J. says -- "I'm Carl Johnson." And in my mind, I completed the rest of the sentence -- "I'm Carl Johnson, and I'm Superman."

With Nico, I never felt that way. Nico brought me far closer to the story, the characters, and the sadness and pain that went along with them. There was a grittiness to the GTA IV world that had been lacking in any of the previous titles. And yes, I know -- it is last-gen stuff. But I still love the PS2 graphics of GTA III and VC, and IV was such a huge leap forward that I don't care.

Thanks for posting this. It was a good reminder of why I play this franchise.
