GTAG Recommends: Crank

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 11:40 AM MDT | By Ash_735
Getting into shootouts with the police around LA, taking drugs by force from a hospital, stealing vehicles and speeding through a mall all whilst tracking down the men that betrayed you just so you can kill them, sounds pretty GTA like right? Well in the run up to Grand Theft Auto V we here at GTAGaming will be looking at certain films that will show off LA, both past and present, along with various styles of criminal activity, from street gangs, to lone psychos, to planned heists. First film we're looking at is 2006's Crank:

Meet Chev Chelios (played by Jason Statham) a British Hitman living in Los Angeles who wakes up one morning to find out he's been poisoned in his sleep with an synthetic drug known as "The Beijing Cocktail" and the only way for him to stay alive is to keep his adrenaline pumping. With only a few hours left to live, Chelios goes on a rampage through LA to try and track down the man responsible to kill them before he dies.

The film is fast and stylized, with many creative transitions including one where the camera will zoom out into the sky showing a map of the city and highlight the next location and zoom into that (sound familiar?) with locations sprawling from the street club houses to Chinatown to luxury apartments in the hills to hospitals and warehouses, with Chelios fighting off the Police and Gangs along the way.

Of course we feel this serves as a perfect inspiration for the more chaotic Grand Theft Auto characters, the film is packed with action, fighting, shootouts and just pure anger from the main character and mainly, it's a fun film to watch! The soundtrack is also very varied, ranging from Loverboy, Quiet Riot, Jefferson Starship, Harry Nilsson, NOFX, Control Machete, Rocket from the Crypt, etc, giving that kind of Grand Theft Auto radio feel where one moment you could be listening to punk during a chase, rap music from the clubs or classic rock just getting between locations.

So if you're looking for a film to watch to get a rough idea of what a more chaotic character in Grand Theft Auto would be like and to also check out how well modern day LA works for this style, then one of the first films we'd tell you to watch would be this, Crank, we'd also recommend you stick around until the credits finish to see a quick little retro homage of the main character in a video game killing all the gang members in the street to complete his "Rampage". As for the sequel, Crank High Voltage, it's not as good as the first film, it takes a much deeper dive into the absurd and many of the new extra characters come off more like cartoon characters and in all honesty rehashes a lot of the better scenes from the first film but is still worth checking out mainly for its style.

I liked the first one, but honestly never got around to watching the second.
