Eurogamer.net revisits the Hot Coffee Mod scandal

GTA: San Andreas - General News | @ 03:04 PM MDT | By rappo
Those of us that have been around in the GTA community for several years can undoubtedly remember the wild uproar that surrounded one of the most downloaded mods of all time: GTA San Andreas's Hot Coffee Mod by PatrickW. This simple mod unlocked a side game allowing CJ to have sex with his girlfriends, but it also unintentionally unlocked a whirlwind of controversy surrounding the game, including a few lawsuits and an Adults-Only ESRB rating, effectively shutting San Andreas out of most video game retailers.

Video game site Eurogamer.net has decided to revisit the controversy with some transcripts of emails and phone conversations between Rockstar Games president Sam Houser and his associates, along with quotations from PatrickW, the modder himself, describing the situation from his perspective.

The article is a rare look at Sam Houser's vision for the Grand Theft Auto series, and how important it is for him to constantly be pushing boundaries:
"Can we confirm that these are the content changes that need to be made? As I mentioned to Terry [Donovan, then CEO of Rockstar Games], I was pretty shocked by the list. The cuts are everywhere. It doesn't feel like we are pushing any boundaries now. Why bother? I really, really do not want to change this stuff. It feels SO wrong at the behest of psychotic, mormon [sic], capitalist retailers." - Sam Houser

While general mischief always seems to be the goal in the Grand Theft Auto series, I can't say I've seen a game in the series push the envelope like San Andreas did. The Hot Coffee Mod seemed to be a very traumatic experience for Rockstar - let's hope that their willingness to stir up some controversy isn't lost in GTA V.

what I don't get is how rockstar got in trouble for this but other games such as Saints Row 1, 2, and 3 allowed it.

I've lived in three major ciities in the U.S. where interracial romance is everywhere. I have had numerous friends who have had siginificant others whose ethicity was different from their own. I myself have had several girlfriends who were clearly not white -- and I am white.

I'm convinced that the real reason why people got their panties in a twist over this mod has more to do with racism than anything else. In fact, I will tell you without a DOUBT that this is why. People are pretty dumb. They are small-minded, shallow, and petty.

I too hope that R* just says "fuck you" to anyone who has such a small mind. I hope that GTA V has even more explicit stuff than the "Hot Coffee" mod. And I hope that it isn't a MOD -- I hope that it is part of the gameplay.

Is it possible? Yes. R* has WAY more money now than they did in 2004. They can afford to take a hit from the amoral minority. In fact, it might even help them to flourish even further.

I can't believe I never made the connection between Hot Coffee and the coffee held by the Statue of Happiness in IV.

Anyway, interesting read.

The "controversy" is so stupid. If it had originated anywhere else outside of the US, it would've been resolved in a day or two, why? Evolution of minds..but hey, I don't wanna go into politics here..

I'm gonna go jerk off outside to raise awareness. When they come to arrest me, I'll say "Hey! At least I didn't kill anyone, right?"

To be honest, I never could play this mini-game. And if CJ was white, no one would mind. It's racism related, mostly.

Ratings systems aren't consistent, they're just a way for a council of stuffy folks to plaster a one-letter summary onto a work of art, in the hopes that squeamish parents will hide their children from it, considering that which is offensive to the senses to also be offensive to the intellect. If there were any consistency with ratings systems, then I'd understand, but there isn't.

There is an extreme relaxation of standards when it comes to violence, but a surprising stuffiness when it comes to sex. I'll never understand that about humans.
