Sony warns players not to use their PS3 consoles

GTAGaming.com - General News | @ 01:42 PM CST | By Neil
UPDATE: The problem has now fixed itself and the console should now be able to Sign In and play games like normal, a side effect is that your current date and time on the console will now be in the future so just remember to set it back to the correct date and time.

In an unprecedented event affecting many PlayStation 3 owners, Sony has announced that it is currently battling a "bug in the clock functionality" of early 'fat' models of its console.

The problem causes the system's clock to be set to the incorrect time and date, rendering many of the system's functions useless. The problem appears to affect all users of these larger models of console, including those who are not connected to PlayStation Network.

The company is advising players not to use their consoles until an update is available, which it says should be in the next 24 hours. If you do turn on your console, the problem will manifest itself in one of the following ways:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

  • Owners of the new 'slim' model of PlayStation 3 are not affected by this issue. For more information, visit the Playstation Blog.

My date was reset to December 31st, at 6:30 PM. Odd, but I'll just wait for the fix :)

Yeah, mine has gone back to 1999, quite the critical flaw but a simple error that no one expected, I'm just amazed at how much the console has been crippled, I mean, not even playing games because it's confused about the year and not being able to sync with anything, ouch, this people is what we have to look forward, in 20 years time when the PS3 support is stopped, is this how the console will act? At least I can still use my Mega Drive and Dreamcast!

The only way this could get worse is if my PS3 grew rings and they started flashing red. I can't play AC2 because I was booting it up when the errors started rolling in. Pretty much all other games I have and the ones without trophy support are working though, even if I can't play them online.

I just finished up an enjoyable round of Modern Warfare 2 on my unaffected slim model PS3!

My 20GB last night didn't have any issues, but I'll check it out again later.

Yes. I believe it's fixed because it's been 24 hrs since it happened.

Just played a match of MW2. Wasn't working last nite. Changed my time by internet again and it set it to March 1st, 2010. It was at April 29, 2020 after it was back up, it was 12/31/99 yesterday.

Well, it wasn't PSN that was down, it was the console itself effing up by itself, connected to the internet or not =P

How could that glitch appear on a console that is now connected to the internet in any way possible? Didn't check the date on mine for a few months, but it was working ok.
