Sony still wants GTA games on PSP

GTA: LCS - General News | @ 05:50 PM MDT | By Neil
At the end of a tremendous week in which The Lost and Damned hit Xbox 360 and trailers for the DS-exclusive Chinatown Wars were released, many will be wondering when Sony's consoles will get a little more GTA action.

That question may have been answered yesterday when MTV News spoke to John Koller, SCEA's Head of PSP Hardware Marketing. In the interview, he expresses the good relationship which his company has with the series publisher, Rockstar Games and goes on to talk a little further about GTA:

"No one should sleep on that franchise. It's tremendous for PlayStation in general. We’ve had two that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there’s definitely continued conversations with Rockstar on all their brands."
-- John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America, 26 February 2009

Good! I'd really like another GTA on the PSP.
LCS and VCS are my 2 favorite games on my PSP. I'd really like to see something a bit bigger map-wise on the PSP, though.

Wonder how they would play it though, the games are set in the IV-era now so going back to the III-era would just be odd and confusing to many gamers out there. Would be good if they toned down the graphics of Liberty City in IV and ported the DLC (Since that was only 1.77GB whilst UMD's hold 1.8GB) but that would mean cutting out all of the GTA IV original content and looking now, somehow a GTA game with just 22 vehicles, 6 weapons, 5 Radio Stations and a re-skinned Liberty City might not be that welcomed by fans, I'm just rambling here, ignore me.

Well Mr smart ass, don't you think there going to do San Andreas stories? I think that's the only possible and obvious step for them to take.

Yep, it's IMPOSSIBLE for R* to create a new city just for that game. Completely impossible.

revanx3: San Andreas Stories would be set in the III-era, which is now over, unless it means going back, which is why I said it would confuse people, any Liberty City references in San Andreas Stories would be to the old GTA III Liberty City where as any new content is in the IV-era, such as Chinatown Wars. If they did San Andreas Stories it would mean the timelines getting mixed up which is very likely to confuse non-fans, Smart Ass.

I know I'm probably wrong or misinformed but, Ash the assumption that the III era is over is one without a single bit of confirmation from R*. I, for one, would love to see another installment. A San Andreas Stories release I think would be a wonderful way to close the circle. Or, maybe even a way to link III to IV. Who knows outside of Rockstar what they really have in store? It will be fun to speculate though.

You know what, I'm not going to bother going into the whole timeline argument, I just think releasing a III-era game in a IV-era line up would just be out of place, confuse many casual players and would seem like a waste of time when the money could be spent towards creating a new installment for the IV-era.

The argument of timelines isn't that important considering that the events of III happen seven years before that of IV. All the other games in the III era were prequels. A large majority of gamers who play the game have played and understand that these games are not chronological in order. It seems to bother you more than anyone else Ash.

I do believe the PSP will get two more GTA titles. Here's why:

The GTA III era comprises of two trilogies: the main trilogy (GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas) and a handheld trilogy (Advance, LCS, VCS).

The GTA IV era, I believe, will have something similar: the GTA IV main trilogy (GTA IV, The Lost and Damned, Episode 2) and a handheld trilogy (Chinatown Wars, and 2 other PSP titles).

It will most probably be dealt with like this, or perhaps like this: GTA IV main trilogy (GTA IV, GTA IV VC, GTA IV SA) and the spinoff trilogy (TLAD, Chinatown Wars, Episode 2).

Depends on which route Rockstar will take, in my opinion - but I think it will be the former rather than the latter, since GTA IV is treated like a fusion GTA III and the GTA 1 series (Expansions and Stand-Alones together).

The point Ash was making is that III era Liberty City and IV era Liberty City have almost nothing in common, and so far not a single character, nor a single location has made the jump from the first 3D series into this one unless you include off-screen personalities. All the areas are renamed and remapped, so if they made a "San Andreas Stories", any and all references to Liberty City would confuse the hell out of anyone who doesn't come on this site non-stop like us. =P There's a reason Chinatown Wars is taking place in GTA IV's Liberty and not the one from nearly a decade ago. When you're trying to establish a new series from an already popular franchise, it helps to keep a coherent order.

Also, fans of the series know that the first Grand Theft Auto consisted of Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City. GTA III was the start of a new system, a new look. New everything, but still set in Liberty City, and then the sequels would add to that system, while still keeping to the same three locales, though some would argue the original San Andreas was just their version of Los Angeles. So, if GTA IV era Grand Theft Auto decides to give Vice City and San Andreas the same hyper-realistic treatment Liberty got, parading a portable version of a five year old game would make no plausible sense.

One interesting thing though is that there are many references within GTA IV to Las Venturas, Los Santos, and San Fierro, which would mean they're all part of the canon as far as "The Era of Niko" is concerned, rather than them deciding San Andreas would go back to being one city. Who knows, they could go for it if they wanted to. Personally, I was one of the people who wanted to see Los Santos Stories and San Fierro Stories and so on. I would love it for the nostalgia alone. I just can't see some exec giving the thumbs up on the idea, since it wouldn't go towards pushing the series forward.

I think you are not giving the casual gamer their credit. Most of them are intelligent people who can identify the differences. I understand that they wanted to remake the city which when completed was alarger map than the original. So, they probably just changed all the names. It would not be that difficult for Tommy v. to go from "The Harwood Butcher" to "The Berchem Butcher". Once again, we don't know what Rockstar has planned so all any of us can do is speculate. As far as a gaming executive making a decision, they are primarily concerned about marketing and sales. The prdouction department is where the game's forward progress as a series is located.

Go to hell SONY!!!
Does anybody remebers when sony says (In a interview):

Question 1: Last time around, your company had several exclusives on the Grand Theft Auto franchise, which many folks feel was the killer app for the PS2. You're not going to have that advantage this time around. How much does that hurt you?

Sony says: There's no question that having the Grand Theft Auto franchise helped us a lot and helped us sell some units, but I don't think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto.

Question 2: So are you saying that not having an exclusive on Grand Theft Auto doesn't hurt you at all?

Sony: No, I don't think it hurts us. No, I really don't.

So why they are crying now??
I said go to hell SONY, they said GTA it's not important
for theirs console...
Now they suffering the consecuences
Nobody talk bad about GTA!!

That's what I meant, Russell. Cashing in on previous successes might make some cash, because anything with Grand Theft Auto in the name is going to sell, but I have a feeling the Houser brothers and the other people in charge have more than a certain level of creative control in the franchise, so from a storytelling standpoint and a financial standpoint, it would make more sense to support the series you're creating now rather than the one you created before. Right?

Agreed Murph. I just don't see that big of a deal of a return to the III era. It is obvious that they had plans to integrate the two during initial development (Mr. Wong's laundromat being an example). I just think that as the game production progressed the story and city became much larger than they had envisioned. Kind of like how most authors say that the story they start off with goes in a totally diffferent direction than they had planned.

True. That could have been the case, though I saw those references as being Easter eggs myself. One thing I really like about the episodic content idea when it comes to GTA is that I get the feeling they really love this new world they've created and now they're getting the chance to really expand on it and make every character that much deeper, and I really like those little references to the older trilogy. Just waiting to see if they go so far as to actually add some major character from then into the newer series, since they've said in interviews they want them to be separate.
