GTA IV is Sci-Fiís Most Overrated Game of 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 11:45 AM MDT | By Ash_735
Grand Theft Auto IV is certainly topping many polls of 2008, both good and bad, in contrast to the previous post where Grand Theft Auto IV is named Game of the Year by TIME Magazine, here, Sci-Fiís Fidgit website have named it the most overrated Game of 2008. Here is what they had to say:
One of the most amazing realizations of a real-world-ish place and one of my favorite games this year. Also the setting for a poorly told story and uninspired gameplay, and the subject of a system-shattering PC port.

And here is the full list:
  1. Grand Theft Auto IV
  2. LittleBigPlanet
  3. Braid
  4. Metal Gear Solid 4
  5. Mass Effect
  6. Wii Fit
  7. Spore
  8. Burnout: Paradise
  9. Left 4 Dead
  10. Civilization IV: Colonization

That's pretty lame... look at this list and then TIME's Top 10 and there are quite a few similarities. Makes me think that Sci-Fi is just trying to be controversial :p

Maybe TIME was just trying to appeal to the masses. ;) I think, this year has been pretty dismal as far as game releases has been anyway.

I'd dare disagree with this list though on the case of GTAIV if not for the buggy PC port, but I don't think the game itself should be damned for such a thing. I love the game's story, I love the gameplay and I love the multiplayer.

As for the rest of the list, what little I've played of it, I'll agree were kinda overrated. Spore got dropped by me after like a few days from boredom. And while I enjoyed Mass Effect a bit, I haven't touched it in a while since it's lacking the power to captivate me like GTAIV has. I wouldn't call it a 2008 game though...maybe the PC port.

You know, I smell the stank of disgruntled PC players from that list. lol

Well, if something appeals to the masses, doesn't that mean it truely is the game of the year? :P

This is so unfair for them to do this to Rockstar's amazing title, GTA IV is a truly next generation game! If it was called something else like The Getaway 3, then it would have gotten a lot more respect from critics and the reason why is because people expect much more from a game that holds the GTA name.

Many people and critics alike expected GTA IV to be GTA SA X10!

But that isn't how it works in the real world, next generation games like GTA IV have their limits when it comes to pushing the hardware to it's fullest potential and that is exactly what GTA IV did!

Sure they could have kept some of the fun aspects that were present in the previous GTA game, but Rockstar wanted to take the series into a more realistic and most of all respectful direction which caused the game to be criticized as being one of the most over hyped games of 2008.

I really love how people on this board follow R* and everything they do like sycophants, blindly quoting them from interviews and game previews. As soon a someone criticizes their game, they're told to either get off the forums or they're just trying to be different.

Grand Theft Auto IV really does qualify as one of the most over-rated games of the season. Really, what's so different about the gameplay besides minor cosmetic tweaks? You get a set of wheels, go drive somewhere, shoot people, maybe chase more people, then mission completed.

And this whole notion of it being more "realistic" is a bunch of tripe. In the real world, people can and do customize their cars freely-especially if they have more than $1,000,000 and don't have to pay for anything. There are more clothing options than a small, select number of stores. There are more weapons than a deagle and a glock, and mp5 and an uzi, an m4 and an AK.

Additionally, the protagonist is much more a Hollywood portrayal than anything. R*, early on, makes a point of him being a Yugoslav, an ex-soldier from a wartorn and criminal region. But it's insignificant. They didn't bother to do their research and find out how they think, just like they didn't bother to hire an actual Serb to do the voice work for the two main Serbian characters. Because most people are unfamiliar with that region, or misunderstand it, R* decided not to go out of their way and make an accurate depiction but rather a lazy caricature. For all his self-doubt about killing people, he certainly doesn't exercise qualms about running over random pedestrians. And he makes such a point of the fact he doesn't have any money, so he works to collect so much of and he can't even do anything with it? Please.

Rappo's got it. They just want attention.

What's next? They're gonna say that Halo is underrated.

Well, I can understand Metal Gear Solid 4 and Wii Fit (along with Wii as a whole), but Mass Effect? Mass Effect didn't get fantastic scores and their saying it was overrated. I've lost hope in most of humanity.

I bet this list was made by Yahtzee. It's the only way that would make any sense.

Last time I checked, everyone I knew thought LBP was some childish piece of garbage. I thought it was fun, and that I could keep on playing it for a long time. But they are trying to get attention and stir up some controversy. So what's their top pick for game of the year? Vampire Reign?

And although GTA4 was a great game, I believe the online multiplayer was extremely overrated. I played it once, haven't played it since. Not only is it boring, but it's very flawed. The aiming is horrendous and it does feel like other players are cheating. An SMG from a mile away kills me in 3-4 hits, while my sniper takes the same amount of shots to the head. The lag in racing always gave the upperhand the other players. I would only ever win if everyone crashed or made a mistake; slower cars would always beat me regardless of them screwing up. It makes me sick to think that R* believes this is "unique".

GTA was meant to be singleplayer on consoles and PC's with the PC versions being modded with MP. The first versions of the laggy SA-MP, and I mean verrrry laggy, were loads more fun than the MP in GTA4.

I'm not going to say GTA4 was a bad game, but for me at least it was a little disappointing. I played it for a while, and I had fun with it, but eventually certain features got to be more and more annoying, and I found myself playing it less and less until I stopped altogether. It really wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

San Andreas, by comparison, I STILL own a copy of and I still pull it out and play from time to time.

A little fanboyish comment: Screw Sci-Fi! I don't think Mass Effect is overrated at all, nor Burnout... not even Wii Fit, at least for giving us the NSFW videos. :D

It's really unfair to bash the whole game with its amazing storyline, realistic gameplay and awesome graphics, just because the PC port screwed up. I'm on your boat rappo.

Sci-Fi did a special on Mass Effect, the retards. I agree that GTA IV was overrated, but it was still a great game. It's just that people expected the second coming of Christ. Personally, I'd take a new GTA over an undead hippie, but different strokes for different folks.

I'm known elsewhere for being a user of the word "overrated" and said for years that the word is both misunderstood and misused. I have not been able to play GTA4 yet due to the lack of a XBox 360, PS3, and SP1 for Vista, so I can't say anything about it. What I can say is that "overrated" doesn't mean "bad". It just means that the user of the word thinks that the game isn't as good as people make it out to be. The guy even said that GTA4 one of his favorite games of the year.

As for whether or not he is seeking attention - of course he is. People who generally make lists do. Controversy results from all such lists, whether that's intended or not.
