Neil, the scan in that thread seems a bit ambiguous to me. I read it as meaning the phone won't let you listen to MP3's (i.e. custom soundtracks) while walking around, it didn't seem to imply that you can't listen to the games radio while on foot.

It's an interestingly phrased piece, that's for sure. We already know that the Xbox 360 has full support for custom soundtracks, so whether you're using the phone or not would really make no difference.
I'd be inclined to think that EGM would only make a point of correcting this (and facing the embarrassment) if it was something players would truly notice, so it might be that all support for music from the phone has been dropped.
The part where it says "letting you listen to music while you walk around town" implies that you won't be able to do this at all, regardless of whether it's sourced from an MP3 or from the game radio. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

It's no big deal to me if it can't be done. I can live without it.

Here's why I say it was dropped: ZIT.
If you can just import your own MP3's, how will Rockstar's ZIT service, that's tied in with Amazon's MP3 service make any money?
At the end of the day, Rockstar is still looking for long-term profit. DLC and ZIT will probably give them that. The initial launch of GTAIV is just going to give them back all the money spent making the game. To make it profitable, they have to tailor the game to be profitable, ie taking out personalized soundtracks and (rumor:) adding whole cities as DLC.
And also, the scan says "mp3's" not radio stations. I wouldn't be surprised if you can listen to the radio while walking. Then again, I can be totally wrong. I don't recall ever having seen a cell phone with an FM/AM tuner on it before, unless it was a PDA or Smart phone.

Which rock do you live under TheBeast? I had a 'cell' phone with an FM radio nearly 10 years ago...
this is a feature that i'm not sure if i'll miss. I pretty much always turn game music right down anyway (after the initial period). I prefer to hear all the other effects the game gives [ post edited 04-20-2008 09:09 AM by ThirtyTwo ]

Yes, this is a feature I won't miss. Like someone said above it would take the player out of the atmosphere anyway. I want to hear peds and stuff when I am walking around. But I am sure we will still be able to hear music blasting from our cars when the door is open, while on foot.

I also believe it's only about the custom soundtracks.

The only value I can see of having music as you walk is if you are just gonna "hang out" in Liberty City and want to sorta listen to your headphones for a while. It's a common real-life pasttime ya know, just about everyone you pass on the sidewalk these days is plugged into an iPod or something. However, most of those people are not in the middle of game missions or looking to carjack or randomly kill someone (at least I hope). So it's not a major loss in my book. I can see it as a patched in feature later on though, if there is a lot of clamor about it.

This is the same EGM who said there are 14 Radio Station and then changed their minds later on when it was actually 18. Have they forgot about the different Mobile Phone models, the one Niko starts out with doesn't have a Radio Tuner in it, as you progress through the game you get a better Mobile Phone with more features, one of them being a Radio Tuner. Maybe they just fucked up again.

maybe....
But even if its the truth its not a huge issue for me anyway... I probably wouldn't use the feature.
I'm more concerned about listening to the environment and hearing the funny things people had to say lols

Btw I heard this rumour that the UK version of GTA 4 has had some significant content cuts due to censorship and apparently its lost 6 hours of gameplay...
This may be a rumour... but if anyone knows any thing i'd love to hear!

Ah, that was a neat idea, yeah it'd take you out of the surroundings, but after you've heard that ped say "I FEEL GREAT!", or "I've got crabs the size of baseballs!" for the umpteenth time, that might not be a bad thing.
Granted the random banter is said to be greatly increased so as not to hear "For my birthday, we went to Ammu-Nation." fifteen times in three minutes, but still, as much as I play Grand Theft Auto, I expect I'll be hearing some often repeated phrases, that would have been an opportune time to whip out Niko's headphones and go for a stroll.
Again, with both consoles being online, and a large feature of this new game being multiplayer, and the DLC for both consoles, I wouldn't be surprised to see this feature patched back in once (like TheBeast said) their ZIT service slows down a bit.
Regardless, GTAIV will still blow our socks off. :D

As for me, it's not a great loss...when I walk in GTA, I like to hear the sounds of the city, you know just this regular car noise and I would be great if you can hear radio from the nearby cars - I would love that. (or maybe radio from ped headphones like in GTA 3 )

Yeah I said long ago that it felt like a stupid addition.
There was a certain feeling of being in real city because only cars had radios. I suppose because if there was a radio in both cars and on foot it would feel more like the music was a soundtrack playing on top of the game not a radio playing within the game.
I am not disappointed in this lose. I worry more about if this means many other things will be lose.

After reading the Audio article I'm going to miss this feature even less. With so much dedication to making a living, breathing city I can't wait to crank up the surround sound and go for a stole.

i think hearing music while walking is unreal anyway. theres just music coming from nowhere? maybe if he put on headphones then it started it would be cool but its not really a big deal. if you want that feature go play saints row2 wjen its out.
