Sunday Reading, interviews with Dan and Sam Houser & Map Size

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 08:15 AM CST | By Ash_735
For those that are interested the Houser brothers have done a quick interview each with different newspapers, which both details how passionate and how much work they have put into Grand Theft Auto V, the first interview is with Dan Houser from The Guardian, inclduing subjects such as the scope of the game and the constant rejections of Hollywood movie rights to adapt the game to the big screen:
"We spent a minimum of 100 days in Los Angeles on research trips, probably more," he says of production, which began at the height of the US's sub-prime financial crisis in 2010. "Out and about, all night long with weird people, strange cops showing us around, a lot of first-hand research. We spoke to FBI agents that have been undercover, experts in the Mafia, street gangsters who know the slang – we even went to see a proper prison. These poor buggers in the middle of the salt flat desert, miles away. It was eye-openingly depressing."

"LA is this embodiment of 20th-century American desires: the houses, the gardens, the tans, all slightly fake. It's the end of the western world – the suns sets and then it's tomorrow. But the industry is movies or, equally phoney, real estate. It's people trying to escape their pasts and reinvent themselves. If GTA IV was a classic New York story, this is the endpoint of the American dream."

The second interview is with Sam Houser by The Sunday Times, which sadly is behind a pay wall (though I'm sure you can find it around in other places) but you can read a summarised version of it over on EuroGamer.

Meanwhile over on The Scotsman they talk about GTAV's budget and how much it is projected to sell in the first year alone, with some quotes by Aaron Garbut in there to, but what's most interesting about this article is that it confirms the map size:
The new game revolves around a satirical recreation of southern California. With players able to switch between three protagonists, the 49-square-mile world boasts a welter of activities, such as scuba diving with sharks and hijacking trains.

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 10:10 AM CST | By Ash_735

Brothers, Sisters, it is a pleasant Sunday afternoon, and on such a calm, peaceful day, we want to help you find enlightenment. Which is why here, at the Epsilon Program our loyal followers have come together at our main temple in Vinewood, Los Santos, to record this masterful album to inspire truth and to put your mind on the right path, the #KIFFLOM path. So as a special gift to the world, we are letting you freely listen to this album, "The Higher Reaches of Epsilon, Vol 1" by our KIFFLOM Subjects, this 12 track album was made and spurred on with great love and vast donations from some of Vinewood's biggest stars, we hope you accept our gift, we hope you enjoy our gift, we hope you will not pay attention to those silly rumours and lies being spread by the heathens who do not want to be saved, and most important of all, we hope you, yes you, the reader, reading this text right now, we're talking to you now, we hope that you will come and join us at our Vinewood temple on our Open Day on the 17th of September, 2013, and be saved for a small fee and life change.

Well, it seems we still have more character artwork to come! Maybe these were put up early? Who knows, but over in New Zealand, promo posters for the game have been put up featuring artwork for Tracey, Amanda, Tao, Wade and Simeon, and thanks to GTAForums member "10 Percent Guano" (love the Ace Ventura reference) we have nice clear shots of these new artworks:

New Patrick Brown fan art "GTA V Launch"

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 12:40 PM CST | By Ash_735
Grand Theft Auto V is only 6 days away! I wanted to do something for the launch of the game and this is what I've come up with. I really wanted to do something that uses all three protagonists in one scene, so here we have a bit of a gang shootout that takes part in a robbery, you can see the armored truck in the distance.

I really can't wait for GTA V, it's so close but the days are going so slow, it's going to be amazing. You can expect many more GTA V artworks to come, I am planning on doing a GTA V Online piece of fan art too.

I will also be doing a GTA V review once I have a good play through of the game, if you haven't seen my new review section, check it out: /reviews/

Enjoy!

GTA Online Preview in Game Informer

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 01:25 PM CST | By Kodo
The latest issue of Game Informer has a 12 page preview of GTA Online, coming as a separate product launch on October 1st. The preview covers the online experience from when your character first arrives in Los Santos up until you have a full crew running some of the biggest missions. Here are some of the details:

  • GTA Online has been in the works since GTA 3. Eventually GTA Online will be expanded to include previous worlds and future worlds.
  • The game will support up to 16 concurrent players
  • Right now GTA Online takes place before the events of GTA V so you will run into those protagonists.
  • Your online character will take a 4th slot on your character selection wheel
  • You will choose his (or her) parents and grandparents and this will decide their looks
  • You will choose your player's lifestyle (active, athletic, lazy, drinker, etc)
  • These skills and lifestyle start out small but can be upgraded later along with haircuts, clothes, and tattoos
  • The players in your world can be auto-populated with your friends, your crew, and similarly ranked players, or each player can be hand picked. You can also play in "passive mode" where players can't kill you, but you become hostile when you fire your weapon. Matchmaking will keep crews together and they can challenge other crews.
  • Crews can do missions, heists, robberies, assault gang hideouts, hijack armored vehicles, races, and also sports activities

  • There are already 500 missions to do with friends online.
  • You can accept race invites from your phone to warp to the location, instead of waiting in a lobby. For some missions, a lobby window does open up so the crew leader can customize the time of day, weather, degree of difficulty, and the number of lives the crew has to complete the mission.
  • Each player will select their role for the mission and receive specific instructions for that role. If they die, they can respawn but it will count against their crew's lives.
  • Crews will plan missions at a hangout location, and will procure weapons and vehicles before starting.
  • While a friend or crew mate is driving, you can change the radio station and set markers on the map.
  • During missions, your crew can hire 3rd parties like a biker gang or security company to help out.

  • After each mission, you receive Reputation Points and a cash reward. You will have an individual rank and a crew ranking.
  • The crew leader decides how the money is split after a mission or heist. If it's not divided fairly, players can kill each other to take the cash. The cash is safe from other players if it is deposited into an ATM. Purchases made will be debited from the bank account.
  • Cash is used to buy upgrades to your character's appearance as well as customizable weapons, vehicles, and housing. If someone in your crew owns some luxury real estate, the crew unlocks the ability to meet there and plan for a high stakes mission.
  • Each home comes with a garage to store customized vehicles, with more space depending on the house, up to 10 vehicles.
  • You can invite friends and crew members over to have a drink, call strippers, enjoy the view, and watch the Rockstar parody TV shows together. If one of your crew members is in a high speed chase, they will appear on Weazel News on the TV.

  • Rockstar plans to continue creating new content for GTA Online and support it as a separate product from GTA V.
  • There will be a dedicated team to help with the stress testing in the first few weeks.
  • Player created race and deathmatch modes will be available at launch, with more complex mission creators coming later.
  • You need to access a certain rank before you can create (but it only takes 1 hour of play).
  • Creation mode lets you choose the type of race (Normal, GTA, or Rally), weather, radio station, police interference, and ambient drivers.
  • Deathmatch creation mode lets you choose the type, timer, and kill count, spawn points, weapon types, and extra props and vehicles.
  • Rockstar will be playing and ranking the user-created content on the Social Club, and players can download the best content

Polygon interviews Dan Houser on GTA V's character switching

Grand Theft Auto V - General News | @ 01:51 PM CST | By rappo
Gaming news source Polygon has published an interview with Rockstar's co-founder and vice president of creativity Dan Houser on "Grand Theft Auto V, metaphysics and the power of three." In the article, Polygon details their experience playing GTA V with emphasis on the character switching, while Dan Houser comments on the creative thought process and development of the system.
"You'll miss lots if you don't pop over to [a character] from time to time," Houser said. "You'll miss lots of the stuff they are potentially getting up to, but you won't miss key plot points. It will be little details about what their lives are like, based on what you've done in the plot. You'll miss those obviously if you move the plot past where those are no longer relevant, and just the sheer number of things you can see them get up to, you'll miss them if you don't keep going to have a look for them."

They even go a little deeper to tackle the metaphysics behind a video game plot driven by three protagonists:
"I suppose we think of it as, each character sees themselves as being the star of their own movie of their life," Houser said. "Everybody thinks they're the star of their own movie at some level, don't they, in existence? So to each character, they are very much the star of their experience. We really wanted to focus on each of them having their own sense of progression, their own adventure, but where they're also so interwoven that it doesn't break apart in the same way as say, the episodes from GTA 4 plus the two mission packs breaks apart into three very clear stories with small points of crossover.

"In this, they're much more tightly interwoven to the point where they almost become the same thing, but, to any one of them, at any one moment, they should always feel like they're not someone else's supporting character; it's their life, it's their adventure."
