Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 03:40 PM MDT | By Neil
YouGamers, the gaming resource site of benchmarking behemoth Futuremark Corporation has launched a web application which allows gamers to check whether their PC is capable of running GTA IV.

It's no secret that the game will require a very mighty PC to run, so it would be advisable to check this out before you go running to the store later this week.

Of course, tools like this are not always accurate but it can give you a ballpark estimation of how your PC will perform. Test your system by clicking here.

GTA IV PC error troubleshooting

Grand Theft Auto IV - Rockstar/Take2 News | @ 08:37 PM MDT | By rappo
The PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV is now available in North America, Europe, and Australia! The release, however, does not come without trouble: many frustrated gamers have been reporting framerate and general graphic settings issues.

Although I wish we could be bringing news of a complete fix for these problems, that may have to wait off a couple weeks. For now, Rockstar Games has published a couple documents on the official support page, including one that explains each graphics setting and another that documents all error codes that the game may return. Unfortunately, many people have reported that their game suffers from framerate problems regardless of the graphics settings. We'll be covering any game patches or solutions that we come across, for now anybody with problems can try our forums for support.

Widespread reports of GTA IV PC problems

Grand Theft Auto IV - Community News | @ 01:00 PM MDT | By Neil
ProblemsBack in 2002 Rockstar Games released a port of Grand Theft Auto III for PC. The game's system requirements weren't especially taxing for the time, but gamers (myself included) experienced issues with the game's performance.

Fast forward six years and it seems like history is repeating itself. Message boards around the web are littered with stories from gamers who have realised that their machines aren't quite up to the job of running GTA IV.

The most critical part of the system for playing GTA IV seems to be the graphics card and the game box recommends at minimum a GeForce 7900 or Radeon X1900 chip. However, even cards from the generation above these are struggling - by far the most vocal group seems to be those who own nVidia's GeForce 8800 series of graphics cards. It seems that people using this hardware aren't getting the performance they expected.
Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.
-- Rockstar Games, 2nd December 2008
Thankfully back in the old Liberty City days a patch was swiftly issued and performance was improved drastically. Whether we'll get a repeat performance this time around remains to be seen, although SLI support will be coming according to Rockstar.

If you're on the fence at the moment about buying this game, and if you've got anything less than a GeForce 8800 then it's probably advisable to hold out on your purchase and see if the situation develops further.

Rockstar is on the ball

GTAGaming.com - Rockstar/Take2 News | @ 03:51 PM MDT | By Zidane
We've just received word from the Webmaster at Rockstar Games that for everyone experiencing problems with the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, there is hope.
Hey guys,

We are aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV on their PC’s and we would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible.

We would ask anyone that is encountering difficulties to contact their local technical support helpline for advice and recommendations. These telephone numbers can be found in the game’s manual.

There is also a regularly updated technical support page available on the Rockstar Games website http://www.rockstargames.com/support/ where there are many useful faqs and information on how to resolve some common problems being encountered.

Thanks,

Webmaster@R*

New drivers may fix your GTA IV woes

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 07:46 PM MDT | By Neil
nVidia just released a new set of drivers and they are specifically aimed at GTA IV players. The success you'll have with this software is a bit hit and miss - some users are reporting vast performance increases while others say there is no change. Trying won't hurt, though. nVidia users can get the new drivers here.

A new ATi driver will be released on December 10th and should significantly improve performance for gamers with those cards. Also, another note from Rockstar Games states what we should expect from the coming patch:
Patch Is On The Way
We are working on making a patch available in the next few days. Since Grand Theft Auto IV is a Games For Windows – Live game the patch must be certified by Microsoft before release. The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval. The patch contains a variety of fixes including:

  • A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting.
  • Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays
  • Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice
  • Fix for ATI 1900 shadows
  • Overall savings to memory
  • Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors
  • Multiplayer character settings are preserved
  • Support for DirectInput controllers. Note: The current hack way of supporting these controllers may not work with the improved functionality. So we recommend you remove the hack before upgrading to the patch.

GTA IV mods on the horizon

Grand Theft Auto IV - Community News | @ 12:39 AM MDT | By rappo

opium_addict's Rocket Glock makes the Glock shoot RPGs
UPDATE 12/07: The first true GTA IV mod is now available for download in our file archive! Bobster's GTA IV Real Vehicle Names replaces the american.gxt file (which doesn't require you to use a file check bypasser) to show the names of cars in GTA IV as their real life counterparts.

Members over at GTAForums have been hard at work the past couple days in getting the PC version of GTA IV to be played with modded files. Out of the box, the game will not run if any of your files differ from the originals (there may be several reasons behind this, including protection from online cheating or maybe Rockstar Games just got shaken up by the whole Hot Coffee mod incident with San Andreas).

However, a couple of patches have been released to help you get by this, so take your pick (NOTE: these files are not cracks or pirated material. You need to already have the full game to make any of this work!):
Right now the extent of modding capabilities is seemingly limited to small text editing, such as vehicle handling or weapon properties, but things are moving very rapidly. The folks at OpenIV have been working on a very promising all-purpose modding tool for months now, and its release will drasitcally expand GTA IV's modding horizons.

For those that are new to the GTA modding scene, I've compiled a very simple tutorial on our forums to help you make a handling mod. If you've ever modded a GTA data file before, it may be a bit tedious for you. Don't forget to share any modifications that you create, no matter how simple they are!
