IGN's first 10 things to do in Liberty City

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 01:43 PM MDT | By Slim Trashman
Using their latest hands-on experience with GTA IV, IGN has compiled a list of the first 10 things you should check out in Liberty City when you pick up GTA IV next month (yes it is that close!). Each item contains an incredibly detailed description that makes this article all the worth reading:
Squeezing off a shotgun round at the driver caused blood to splatter across the inside of the windscreen (which was now riddled with tiny bullet holes) as the driver's body was knocked violently back in his seat before slumping forward with his head resting on the steering wheel, causing the car's horn to constantly blare away. The intensity and detail we witnessed in this split-second of gameplay left us utterly gob-smacked, and even a little guilty about whacking the poor guy - at least we put his car to good use. He would have wanted that.

Jeuxactu previews GTA IV

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 11:35 AM MDT | By rappo
French gaming site Jeuxactu played a five hour preview of GTA IV and have written their own review of the gameplay. After the wave of previews last week, not much of this may seem new, but here are some points worth mentioning (translated by BenDeR_):
  • It took 5 years and 300 people to develop GTA IV.
  • The smallest details have been taken into account, from non-working bulbs to newspapers flying in the wind.
  • Peds live their lives like any other human. Law Enforcement Agencies will be checking papers, a businessman is walking faster than other peds, a woman is making a phone call in a phone booth, and so on.
  • They talk about Liberty City being as big as San Andreas.
  • Bodybuilding will no longer be in the game and you won't be able to make money by buying businesses anymore.
  • If you commit a very serious crime, the army will be against you. You'll see heavily armed soldiers.
  • By keeping good relationships, Niko may have some clues for future missions.
  • According to the website, it'll take 60 to 70 hours to complete the game.
  • Italians, Puerto Ricans, Russians, Jamaicans, Chinese Triad and Mafia are some of GTAIV's gangs.
  • It might take more than one try to start a car or a motorbike.

The total time of gameplay in GTA IV has been given some contradictory reports. In 2007 previews reported that it would take 130+ hours, the later previews reported that it'll require 100 hours, while this one states 60 to 70 hours - we can't be quite sure of the actual timing, so take this information for what it's worth.

March PSW provides new screenshot

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 12:28 PM MDT | By rappo
The March issue of PlayStation magazine PSW contains a short preview of GTA IV. Although there really isn't much information in the preview, there is one new screenshot (and higher quality scans of past screenshots) in it and the accompanying article provides an interesting read: a narrative of Niko hunting down a snitch named Lyle Rivas at the command of Brucie. The last bit of info in the article also gives us one more radio station name - Liberty Rock Radio, where PSW states Iggy Pop could be heard (uncomfirmed by Rockstar).

Information from Swedish mag, Level

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 02:00 PM MDT | By Kodo
Level, a Swedish magazine, had some information from a recent hands-on preview. A lot has already been covered, but here are some finer details.
  • You can precision throw grenades.
  • You can break dumpsters, fire hydrants, bushes and park -benches with your car.
  • With the new wanted system, it's practically impossible to escape from two police cars and helicopters.
  • No boats will stop to help you if you swim in the 10C water.
  • While sailing with a sailing boat, Niko gets outrun by people jogging on the shore.
  • Being chased by police cars and at the same time having a female voice giving directions is priceless.
  • A lot of thing resembles to American gangster movies such as The Usual Suspects and Heat.
  • When night, ten thousands of lit up windows can be seen in Liberty City.
  • It seems that you can breathe in while sniping, for more accuracy.
  • The game looks nothing like it did back in March 2007, after trailer 1, the game was looking far from finished, with very unstable FPS count. Now the FPS is amazing all the time, no matter how much going on on the streets.
  • When inputting the info in the police databases in cop cars, Niko drives with one hand and operates the computer with the other one.
  • Some spotted street names were: North Holland, Ruby street, and Silicon street.
  • When driving by, you can occasionally spot peds having problem with their cars, standing and shouting and waving with their arms.
  • At one moment Niko said: "What the hell is wrong with these people?" while driving by in the car.
  • Characters' breath can, besides on the street, also be seen when traveling to higher altitudes, like skyscrapers.
  • You can hang onto passing boats and climb on board (similar to VCS I guess)
  • There is a helicopter-tour place where you can take a tour around LC with a guide, or hire your own helicopters. Or just shoot the guide and steal the heli...

Canal & Greene mural changes again

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 02:35 PM MDT | By Slim Trashman
You may remember that big wall on Canal & Greene St. in Manhattan that's always branded with a GTA IV advertisement. Well it is in the process of being changed again. Previously the IV/GTA IV logos, and the Lola artwork, Rockstar is getting the word out that Niko Bellic must be found by pasting his Wanted poster over this wall. The only difference between this version of the poster and the much smaller versions is Niko is this time wanted for "Grand Theft Auto" rather assault with a deadly weapon. "Grand Theft Auto" was actually the originally noted crime on the earliest versions of the posters.

Another picture of this work-in-progress is available via Ian David's Flickr page.

GTA IV likely region locked on Xbox 360

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 04:31 PM MDT | By Neil
Region lockedRecent releases from Rockstar Games have indicated that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV will be region locked. The news is a bad sign for those living in areas where titles are normally delivered later or where video games carry a high premium.

Microsoft's console employs a system which allows game publishers to choose whether they wish their titles to be locked to a single region. Rockstar Games' only released title on the platform so far, Table Tennis, is locked to the region in which it is purchased. The company's next game for the console, Bully: Scholarship Edition, was today confirmed by VideoGamesPlus to have suffered the same fate.

All titles for Sony's PlayStation 3 are region-free, although many retailers refuse to send PlayStation titles to the European Union for legal reasons.

New file archive and 40+ SA mods

GTAGaming.com - Website Updates | @ 06:41 PM MDT | By rappo
We realize that our GTA mod file archive here at GTAGaming is fairly popular, so we decided to beef it up a little bit. Over the past couple weeks I've been working on creating a brand new file archive from scratch (with a lovely download button provided by Slim Trashman). Although it looks very similar to the old paFileDB system, there is a lot more room for improvement now. This means that we'd like to hear from YOU what else you'd like to see in the file archive - (almost) all ideas are welcome! Feel free to drop a comment here or post in our forums with your suggestions.

For now, though, the file archive will function similarly to the old one, but with a few additions. The rating system has been improved, so be sure to give your input on the mods you like and dislike. Another addition is the author page where you can view all mods (and accompanying statistics) by a certain author.

To kick off the new file archive, I've uploaded 40+ San Andreas mods (mostly weapons) by the very talented modder/gunsmith GRIM. While these mods are not new, they are new additions to our file archive, and it's all in anticipation for GRIM's latest release. You can view all of the new mods here, but here are some of my select favorites:

New GTA IV artwork

A new artwork has surfaced over at Xbox Australia. The full high definition version of the artwork is not available at this time. For now, this low resolution version will have to suffice.

More GTA IV artwork appears around New York

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 11:33 AM MDT | By rappo
Since last week's report of GTA IV graffiti seen in Williamsburg (on the corner of Bedford and North 5th), three new instances GTA IV graffiti art have popped up around New York. Artwork of Little Jacob can be seen in Harlem on the corner of 112th St. and 1st Ave. The artwork of Manny and Elizabeta (along with one other) is located in the Lower East Side on the corner of 2nd St. and Ave. A. The last is of Vlad and the text "Liberty City Bar" is located in SoHo on Lafayette between Spring and Prince St.

Unfortunately these small sizes are all we currently have (provided by Gawker - where some better photos can be seen in the article's comments taken by visitors trying to score a free copy of GTA IV), but we'll keep our eyes out for some higher resolution photographs:

We have also added some new GTA IV artwork to the site, found by Brotha. From Swedish magazine Level, this new artwork is very similar to an early drawing of another helicopter ride:
