UPDATED: EA offers $2 billion for Take Two

GTAGaming.com - Rockstar/Take2 News | @ 01:56 PM CST | By Neil
Update: Take Two have just announced that the latest offer, of $26 per share has been rejected.

Electronic Arts today announced that it has made an offer to purchase Take Two, parent company of Rockstar Games, for around $2 billion.

EA proposed $25 cash for each share of Take Two, an offer which was rejected. A further offer has now been made, of $26 per share, which EA CEO John Riccitiello claims is a "unique opportunity" for shareholders. At the close of business on Friday, Take Two's shares were valued at $17.36 each. The $26 offer is almost $2 greater than the company's highest share price in the past twelve months.

Zelnick tells EA, Challenge This! *Update*

GTAGaming.com - General News | @ 10:59 PM CST | By Kodo
Update: After reading Herb Greenberg's outlook on Take2's rejection, one has to re-examine if Zelnick cares about GTAIV more than money. Mr. Greenberg provides a perspective of Take2 and ZelnickMedia placing themselves before shareholders. The core issue still stands, though, and that is some gamers do not want to see GTA IV and subsequent titles in the series produced by EA.

In the interest of sharing some thoughts on the recent offer by EA to Take-Two this post has been created. Maybe we could say thank you Strauss Zelnick, executive chairman, and the rest of the Board of Take-Two for declining EA's offers. At least they stand behind their product when facing a monopoly. EA is not helping the game industry progress forward in terms of innovative and quality games, it seems they only see green. Do they seek GTA IV or do they just want a monopoly on sports titles? This could be an awakening for them.
Therefore, we offered to initiate discussions with EA on April 30th, 2008 (the day after Grand Theft Auto IV is scheduled to release). We believe this offer demonstrated our commitment to pursuing all avenues to maximize stockholder value, while we believe that EA's refusal to entertain this path is evidence of their desire to acquire Take-Two at a significant discount, whereas we believe this value rightly belongs to our stockholders.

Plainly stated, Mr. Zelnick politely and firmly says thanks, but no thanks. If Zelnick is in it only for money, that may be so, but something may be different about it. It is possible that he has a greater focus of excellence and money is only a byproduct of his drive, but time will reveal the truth. Back in March, he did say, "I'm much more interested in growing the business than in selling it, to be clear. I would say for the next five to seven years this is a terrific time to be in the video game business."

After reading the press release a message jumped out: The company has faith in their product. Producers and developers with faith in the product will evolve video games to greater levels. How do you feel about this offer by EA? All comments will be appreciated.

EA wouldn't change GTA, only sell more

GTAGaming.com - Rockstar/Take2 News | @ 06:12 PM CST | By rappo
Following a day filled with news of Electronic Arts wanting to buy out Take-Two Interactive, Take-Two's subsequent rejection, and a plethora of Grand Theft Auto and Bioshock fans expressing their own concerns, EA CEO John Riccitiello has decided to share the details of his plans, if all had gone well.
I wouldn't change a line of code in "BioShock" nor would I in "GTA" or "Max Payne"... what we would do is sell more of it.
John Riccitello, CEO - Electronic Arts

Riccitello also went on to explain that EA lacks M-rated content and that an acquisition of Take-Two would have certainly boosted EA in that department (which, ironically, was one of the many concerns that GTA fans expressed - many feared that the franchise would be censored or dumbed down to better follow EA's standards). When asked about the apparent monopoly that EA would have over sports games if the Take-Two deal went through, Riccitello suggested that they would have still had rivals such as "Wii Sports" and "Hot Shots Golf".

It's impossible to tell in what direction the GTA franchise would have gone if EA's offer wasn't rejected, just as it's impossible to tell if Riccitello's explanations were what he had in mind before yesterday's publicity and outrage. I think it's safe to say, however, that Grand Theft Auto is in no imminent danger - so for now it's onward to GTA IV!

Wave of previews provide new screenshots and info

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 12:03 PM CST | By rappo
Rockstar has been making its rounds, and another wave of GTA IV previews has finally hit gaming sites across the Internet. Each website has something different to offer - mission information, physics and AI reviews, and much more. Here are a majority of the reviews available today:

TeamXboxIGNGamespotKikizoGamespyCVGYahoo!
VideoGamerTVGGamesRadarVirgin MediaGameTap1UPSPOnG

Here's a collection of some of the new or interesting information gathered from the previews:
  • The build, this preview was based on, is exactly 3 weeks old prior to this date.
  • When you're wanted, you'll have a "wanted radius" showing the extent of your tracking. Escape the radius, lower your wanted level.
  • Vehicle GPS systems will show you the path to take in order to reach your objective. The path will be recalculated if you go off course.
  • Fancier cars will have voice navigation.
  • In one instance, Niko punched a "bad guy" named Dardan hard enough to send him through the window to his rear.
  • "In reaction to the crash, a lady bystander started cursing out the two men as they got out of the car, at which point the passenger drew a weapon and gunned the lady down—to the genuine surprise of all those viewing the gameplay."
  • Niko is a master at Krav Maga, a fighting style used by Israeli Special Forces.
  • The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues.
  • You start off on the island containing Broker and Dukes, and the rest of the islands are blocked off. Bohan opens up shortly, though.
  • You won't be able to customize your car like in San Andreas and you can't store goods in them either.
  • Car headlights can be put on full beam or dipped, but can't be turned off.
  • Niko takes a crash helmet and puts it on when getting on a bike and leaves it next to the bike when getting off.
  • There are 18 radio stations with a variety of genres, one of which is named Vibe FM (R&B/Soul).
  • The mission markers are now yellow arrows floating in the air, pointing at the floor, not cylinders like in the previous GTAs.
  • Dropped weapons and other items now have a yellow halo around them.
  • The full game will take about 100 hours to complete at a normal pace.

We'll be updating some of our GTA IV content pages today with any new information.

GTA IV to run at least at 30 FPS

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 09:02 PM CST | By Slim Trashman
On today's 1UP Yours podcast, the crew over at 1UP.com discussed their experience checking out GTA IV at one of Rockstar's headquarters and claimed that the game "ran beautifully" for both the PS3 and 360 versions, at at least 30 frames per second.

The rest of their GTA IV discussion does not really include anything new, but its interesting to listen to nonetheless. They spend a good 10 plus minutes or so discussing the game.

EGM previews GTA IV, exclusive interview with Sam Houser

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 01:49 PM CST | By Slim Trashman
EGM subscribers have received their April 2008 issues a bit earlier than expected, but found it to contain a new preview of GTA IV and exclusive interview with Rockstar Games President Sam Houser. There is also an interview with the "brewer of the Hot Coffee", PatrickW, on the 10th page of the preview.

New information is noted below:
  • Rumor is that Niko Bellic is inspired by a favorite driver in Rockstar's driving service.
  • If cars take on too much damage, the engine may stall, requiring you to escape on foot and find a new one.
  • Tapping up on the D-Pad brings up the phone where you can access text messages, an organizer, multiplayer modes, a camera, and contacts list, which becomes updated automatically as you meet people. Tapping up a second time will bring up the keypad to make calls.
  • The more advanced model of the phone, including the MP3 player (radio on the go), is not added until later in the game.
  • Lazlow is confirmed to return on the radio.
  • Emergency vehicles respond in real time from their stations around the city. Calling the police can be a handy trick when you need to obtain a police car for a mission - pick one up at the station when no one is around.
  • Again, developing relationships with people will be a crucial part of the game. The better the relationship with someone, the more you'll benefit. If you ignore someone for too long, they will start contacting you with angry messages.
  • Mission dialogue varies after any failed attempts.
  • Portions of the city are closed off at the beginning of the game due to a terror alert. Though Niko can visit the unlocked islands, but that will cost as a heavy increase in the heat level.
  • Niko is said to be a man with no country, in the same was as Claude had been known as a man with no name.
  • Niko spent time in third world prisons.
  • All the ladies love Niko Bellic. Girlfriends will again play a big role in the game as a subsidiary of building relationships - although this time it will be more incorporated into the story.
  • No more invisible ramps. AKA, the new skeletal-animation system will have Niko's body and specifically his feet fall naturally onto different services. (On a set of stairs, Niko will take each step, not walk up an invisible ramp). It's a subtle feature that's explosively illustrated when Niko or any NPC is run down by a car or dragged by a bumper.
  • After telling Houser how much they enjoyed cooking grenades and tossing them out windows of a car, he offered a hint about the online multiplayer "I just like running up to a bunch of players with the grenade cooking in my hands and taking them all out with me."
  • You can resist arrest when getting busted by tapping A/X. This however will reward you an additional wanted star.
  • If you enjoyed the San Andreas multiplayer modes, then you should be a happy with GTA IV online.
  • The motion sensing in the PS3 version will work in "a way that makes sense" is all Sam Houser would reveal.
  • At first, the map of Liberty City was to be enormous - roughly the size of the state of New York. It seemed logical to go bigger at first, but Rockstar decided the focus should be about making the whole GTA experience larger.

In addition to this new information, three new screenshots were revealed, which you can check out below and above.

Niko graffiti art discovered on New York wall

Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 10:57 PM CST | By Slim Trashman
It would appear that those Wanted posters of GTA IV characters worked out for the better. Niko Bellic has been spotted (by LiveJournal user, 3rdrate) on a wall in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the corner of North 5th St. & Bedford Ave.

3rdrate claimed that it just appeared one day when he spotted it. He also brought up something quite interesting on his LiveJournal page. Different characters' wanted posters were put up depending on where you live, as in, Niko's would appear in Brooklyn, Broker, where Niko lives. This could imply that for example, Elizabeta's would appear in the Bronx, Bohan. Very interesting, very creative marketing team Rockstar has got. Perhaps this will trigger a hunt for the rest of the characters around New York City! The search is on, we'll let you know if anyone else is spotted!
