2007 Episodic Content Exclusive To 360
Grand Theft Auto IV - Rockstar/Take2 News | @ 10:01 PM CST | By Kodo
For many months it has been questioned whether there would be any episodic content on the PS3 in addition to the 360. It has now been confirmed by a Take-Two representative that two episodes will appear in the 2008 fiscal year on the Xbox 360 only.
How is this? Because Microsoft paid 50 million dollars for it. The following is a quote from the transcript of the most recent Take 2 conference call regarding the 6/11/07 press release.
Evan Wilson - Pacific Crest Securities: Thank you. And as it relates to the deferred revenue chunk associated with the episodic content on X-Box 360, you can see that $25 million of that moved into short-term deferred. Could you give us any sense of when thatís going to hit the P&L? Will we see $25 million at one time and then the second 25 or will it be a slow bleed?
Lainie Goldstein: The first 25 is for the first episodic content package thatís supposed to go out and that is in March of í08. Thatís why it moved into current because itís in the next 12 months. The second 25 will be for the second episodic, the episode, and that will be later in fiscal í08.
This information is also coupled with the news that GTA 4 will not be ported backwards to PS2/Xbox, as announced here:
Michael Savner - Banc of America: ...But specifically as we look at the GTA release in the fall, is it too late -- is there any possibility that given the strength of PS2 hardware at some point in the future we could see a PS2 version? I think everyone agrees that itís certainly going to be a hardware driver for next gen, but clearly weíre going to be starting from a lower point than I think people thought a year ago. So maybe just talk about any flexibility youíd have going forward about porting that to an older legacy console. Iíll ask that and then I have a follow-up, please.
Strauss Zelnick: Michael, it seems unlikely. Once youíll see the game, youíll understand why. Weíre taking advantage of the features of these new consoles. Itís not a -- this is a brand new game. This is something that --
Benjamin Feder: Iíd say more than that. The guys at Rockstar are pushing the envelope on the hardware. The hardware itself is pretty impressive and we think that GTA 4 will be the cutting edge game for PS3 and for X-Box 360 and thatís going to drive the gaming experience.
The relevance of this news makes itself clear when it pertains to a prospective purchase of a next-gen console. For those that have neither a Xbox 360 nor PS3, yet want to play GTAIV right away, they will have to buy one of those consoles. The exception, the PC version, has not yet been announced and we know it will not be released this year. So will people go for the PS3, or the more economically friendly 360 that includes episodic content? Granted, it is still unclear exactly what the episodic content contains, but it has been announced that it will be a significant addition and not a mere weapon/mission/vehicle add-on.

2007 360 UK Detail
Grand Theft Auto IV - General News | @ 04:44 PM CST | By Kodo
Here is a minor detail from the weekend coming from the 360 Magazine UK.
Rockstar promised us that other cars would prove far more difficult to penetrate and that the police would be far savvier when it came to spotting stolen vehicles. Broken windows will get you noticed in Liberty City.
This is yet another detail relating to GTA IV's unprecedented level of realism. What happens when a cop sees a stolen car, do you pull over, or do you get a star and start the chase? I hope the second trailer displays the new, more realistic side of the LCPD.

Other highlights of the podcast include:
This information is not necessarily new, but it is more elaborate and it is very exciting to read to gain a greater understanding on elements in GTA4.
Garnett Lee: The thing that got me excited while they were showing and talking about it, like not every building has an interior, right? On unique detail:
John Davison: Right, but the ones that do are complete. So it's not like in San Andreas or Vice City where it was basically a box with a hole in it, and you would just go into the area. If you can go into a building, it is the whole building. You can go behind the counter, you can break through the door into the back room [which] has furniture in it, and then you can --
Mark McDonald: Well, and the detail, I was really impressed by it.
John: You can smash the back window.. and anything you can interact with.
Garnett: And there's no loading.
They go on to explain how in the demo, Niko was chased and seamlessly entered a building and ran up through the fire escape.
John: The amount of art that they put into that game is insane. I was blow away just walking up this street, it had a slight incline and there was a bridge going over the top and you could see the train in the distance. And then there was this diner, and there were people walking around in the diner and a guy came out and his phone rang, and he picked up his phone and he was leaning on something and talking, then he walked around the corner and there was a hotdog stand. None of it looked like generic place art. Even like, going down the street, the asphalt on the street had areas where it had been dug up. You know like in San Francisco where they put those f***ing metal plates down everywhere, and they wreak havoc with your suspension? There was an intersection that obviously had some roadwork done on it, and the asphalt was different and there was one of those metal plates. On character depth:
Mark: When you're watching him walk around that area, it didn't seem tiled and it didn't seem like it was graphics that had been set up and put textures on it.
John: It wasn't pulled from a palette and dropped in it. This was like a hand crafted environment, where everything looked like the artists had just gone wild.
Mark: The visual difference between previous GTA and this, it's night and day, it really is.
John: The way that the character carries himself, and the expression... I mean I know they've been big in the past on trying to build emotional connection, but now the stuff that they're doing with like body language and stuff like that..
