2005 Hot Coffee Hits Penny Arcade
GTAGaming.com - Community News | @ 11:14 AM CST | By Kodo
Penny Arcade has posted about the controversy surrounding Rockstar and the Hot Coffee modification. This entails the possibility of the ESRB changing San Andreas's rating from Mature to Adults Only. Tycho expresses his thoughts on the matter and gives a clear distinction between the two ratings, in which he raises a very good point.
In any case the comic is most definitely worth checking out this time, as it pokes fun at Rockstar's situation.
2005 ESRB Investigation Conclusion
GTAGaming.com - Rockstar/Take2 News | @ 02:39 PM CST | By rappo
After the heavy investigation of Rockstar's hidden scenes, brought in the game by the "Hot Coffee Mod," the conclusion has finally been announced, and, unfortunately, it's not looking bright for Rockstar or the Grand Theft Auto series.
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) announced today that the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has changed the rating of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on all platforms from "Mature 17+" (M) to "Adults Only 18+" (AO) because of the so-called "hot coffee mod," an unauthorized third party modification that alters the retail version of the game. Take-Two cooperated fully with the ESRB's investigation.
As a result of the re-rating of the game, Take-Two is lowering guidance for the third fiscal quarter ending July 31, 2005 to $160 to $170 million in net sales and a net loss per share of $(0.40) to $(0.45) to provide reserves for the value of the title's current North American retail inventory. Accordingly, guidance for the fiscal year ending October 31, 2005 is also being lowered to $1.26 to $1.31 billion in net sales and $1.05 to $1.12 in diluted earnings per share.
The Take 2 Games announcement also states that "Rockstar Games to cease manufacture of current version of title and offer a downloadable patch to prevent modification of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for PC."
Although plenty of copies of the game have already been sold, this will definitely be a blow to the future sales of San Andreas and maybe even the mod community.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, the affects have already hit...
It didn't take long for the effects of the rating to be felt. Late Wednesday, Target, and Best Buy issued press releases they were pulling all versions of San Andreas from shelve.
Unconfirmed reports had GameStop following suit, and Wal-Mart told CNN/Money that it had issued orders to all stores to stop selling the game. "We do not sell games that are rated AO," Wal-Mart spokesperson Karen Burk told the site.
UPDATE #2: Green18fan has brought to our attention a new article by Maddox, the famous ranter of the internet, that touches on the Hot Coffee contreversy. It's a hilarious article, and definitely worth a read. You can view that here.
