Rockstar Force EA to Pull Content from Simpsons Game

Quote:
The Simpsons, who doesn't love The Simpsons? Apparently Rockstar. Or at least that's EA's story since Rockstar has demanded that content be pulled from their new Simpsons game. Lead Designer Greg Rizzer elaborates further: I was always under the impression that when you do parody, it's a sign of respect... If we make fun of Grand Theft Auto, we're not going to hurt the sales of Grand Theft Auto... But yeah, we've definitely had some reactions - we've had to pull stuff from the game.

He also adds that during Leipzig Games Convention, EA had to pull a GTA parody poster (Grand Theft Scratchy) from the floor due to a Rockstar-sourced complaint.

Rizzer elaborated that it was probably a lawyer who's been the source of said conflicts, but that's no excuse in our book. Parody has long offered legal solace to those stretching the bounds of freedom of speech and social commentary, even in the light of potential profits—just imagine this classic SNL vid without such protection. EA's response to self-censor has very likely been the result of playing nice to save legal costs and headaches as opposed to actual IP infringement.

Seems hypocritical of Rockstar, seeing they parody a hell of a lot in GTA. Most of the trademark "GTA Humor" is parodies when you think about it. And the Simpsons have referenced GTA in a lot of episodes, and quite bluntly in the movie too.

Maybe Rockstar just hate EA. That's fair enough

Rock* hates EA, but then again, honestly, who doesn't? You look forward to the new years sports game by EA Sports, but then after playing you come to realize it really sucks because of glitches, I wouldn't wanna be associated with that kinda of reputation either lol

Hmm, they are being a bit hypocriticial here, and it just seems very unlikely for Rockstar to make a big deal about this. Thanks for posting though, it's on the site now

And what of "Two Faced Tanner"?

With Rockstar always being attacked by soccer mom associations and Jack Thompson, I thought they'd be above this. =\

This is certainly odd. Good find btw.

I can understand the Leipzig thing because Rockstar were also promoting themselves there so it could have been misleading.

As for the Simpsons game content perhaps they found out what it actually was and didn't like it so much. As far as I know it was Marge protesting about the game "Grand Theft Scratchy", and I can understand that they don't want to promote the idea that their games are something that should be protested about. Considering the whole Grand Theft Scratchy idea has already been promoted quite a bit I wonder how removed or changed it will be because people may notice when it's not in the final game.

Also, how long before Jack Thompson has something to say about this? It wasn't so long ago that he realised Rockstar were (probably) parodying him.

Well, I could see how this may be touchy subject for rockstar. Seeing that the posters incorporates alot of violence, and they don't want seen as overly violent or fan the flames and make things worst.

This is pretty bad, guys. I've just downloaded, played, and immediately deleted the demo. It looks like Rockstar forced EA to remove fun, as well as any references to fun, from the game. Too bad...

To be fair, there is doing a parody, and then just overkilling it, The Simpsons has spoofed GTA many times, Grand Theft Walrus, Grand Theft Scratchy, Death Kill City II: Death Kill Stories, and each time, it's always shown the games as some sort of slaughter game. Now people who know and play the game will know it's a joke, but The Simpsons is a family show, if they keep seeing references to GTA and them being totally overly violent, with people slashing each other to pieces, then yes, it's going to cause bad publicity and will encourage those sad soccer moms to complain about the real one even though they don't have a clue what it's really about.

On another note, EA completely ripped off the Countdown from the GTA IV website, even using the same font, ripped off the trailer style and have probly ripped off a lot more. It's fun to do a parody, but if it's just blatent nicking and showing the original one as some kind of uber violent gore fest, then Rockstar have the right to complain and get it removed.

San Andreas contained spoofs we've all heard before, all they ever do is parody films. They should have their game heavily edited for this. GTA completely stole the Scarface storyline. Door swings both ways yo.

Yeah, but when EA do it, it seems like a pathetic attempt "If they can do it, so can we", just like most EA games, they normally mess up, except for a certain few which are good. Also, no offence to anyone who likes this, but Simpsons games are usually shit anyway, flogging old jokes just like the new series.

Whether they're a shit games company or not is irrelevant. I know EA are shit, aside from Fifa games. But that doesn't amtter at all does it. & you do realise thazt EA wouldn't have wrote any of the story or humour in the game right. That would be, the Simpsons Company.

So you're not even fighting the right arguement. Anyway, like I say, hypocrites, they deserve to go out of buisness. This is what Nintendo did in the late 80s, this is what Sony are doing now.

Really harsh isn't it, So because they didn't want to be portrayed as some sort of Evil, uber violent encouraging company, they should all die and go out of business and never make a game again? Come on, it isn't like it's the first time they have been spoofed, many games spoof GTA and GTA spoofs them, it's like a little laugh within the industry. The Simpsons, as I've said, have just spoofed it way too many times to even be funny anymore, did you even read my first post? Go and read it, you'll see the downside to EA and The Simpsons constantly spoofing GTA this way.

Edit: The way I've seen this, people are looking at this like it's the first time GTA has been parodied, and they are taking action straight away, thuis meaning they suck. Go and look up the spoofs done in other video games and TV shows where Rockstar obviously didn't mind. Try and see this from Rockstars point of view, you're working on a new game, making it more serious, and every step of the way, it's also getting spoofed by The Simpsons as being some extreme violent murder simulator. Just look back, whatever has happened with GTA IV, The Simpsons and EA have spoofed it for no reason. Rockstar have never Spoofed The Simpsons, but The Simpsons constantly feels the need to take the piss out of GTA. It's like pushing someone all day, eventually, they are going to turn around and ask what the fuck are you doing.
