Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

To begin with; some advice: Only play this game if you have the time to play it from start to finish in one sitting. The cutscenes are exquisite, the plot indulging. It would be an insult to Mr. Kojima himself if you did not treat it as a film.

Gameplay:

Minor improvements around the whole board have allowed for a much smoother type of game. New features like camoflauge soon become instinct and life in the jungle is very clean and easy to handle, some might say too easy. The most antcipated part of the gameplay, CQC, is an infortunate letdown. CQC is not at all as intuitive as we would have hoped for and so all I ever particulaly use CQC for is standing behind guards and slitting their throats. A vast array of weapons and the longest and most enduring (but amazing) boss battle ever combine for a thrilling game that will grip you until the final phone call.

Sound:

Harry Gregson-Williams (The Rock etc) compser extroadinare creates yet another orignal score that should win best music to a game ahead of GTA:SA. Also the SFX is very realistic and provides for an amazing asian experience. But the trump card of this deck is the supreme Snake Eater. How they managed to copy James Bond and make it original is beyond belief. If you haven't heard the song give me your email, I'll send you £40 in the post today.

Storyline:

The cutscenes at the beginning of the game will be annoying if you are looking fo action, but if you want the whole experience and truly understand the MGS games then you will enjoy wtaching them. The story is extremely well written, I did not realise some things until the end (no i'm not stupid and didn't realise I played as Big Boss). But What struck me during the final 3 cutscens was how much they made me empathise with Snake, but also the respect I had for Ocelot. I sya no more but really this should have been a film.

Lifespan:

Snake vs. Monkey will make you comeback but not for more than a week. I have just finished my fourth outing and I still haven't see everything. Example, you can blow up armouries or food storages to cause soldiers to run out of ammo or eat raw food and get poisoned. That is depth. 6 months to a year.

Graphics: Not much of a change from MGS2 until you see the end chase scene. This sequence effervesces with an explosion of beauty so ravishing that it.... I could go on.

Overall:

I'd like to sit here and go "So good it gets 100%" but in reality the game has some flaws. At times it does look outdated and the CQC is a let down. But it is an essential game. You emote with characters and want to play more. It will change your life, if it doesn't then you clearly aren't a cospiracy fan. This game hooked we onto the MGS bandwagon oncemore when my doubts were high. Buy this game, Buy MGS2, MGS1, all the MSX games from te 80's and 90's in Japan.

The graphics in this game are perfect, like better than GT4's graphics.

I disagree i think they nailed the CQC as best as they possibly could, all the buttons are extremely tight. Started this game on normal, cause frankly easy is just rediculously easy on any metal gear game, and i found it to be pretty challenging.

Gameplay: Very fun, the beginning has quite alotm of stories, but they work well, it seems to cut straight to the action when you want to, except for one scene where you fall off a bridge etc. Boss battles are fun, except 'The Fear' i found him slightly boring. Yet this game offers one my three favourite boss battles of all time, 'The End', this boss took me an hour and three quarters' and is really intense and quite scary. The atmospehere is solid, and the jungle idea was ingenious. You actually have trouble seeing guards from time to time because of their camoflauge and stuff, so items such as thermal goggles, which you never really needed in other games, become incredibly useful in this one.

Sound:

Harry Gregson-Williams....nuff said.

Storyline: Cutscenes at the beginning annoyed me abit, but after an hour it really gets into the game. Cause people bitched about codec and video seqeucnes, they have been taken out a vast amount. The videos appear in good time, like right when you wanna cut from the action, which is good. The codec convos are still there, but you have to ring to find out info, they aren't enforced. I for one think this is game ios supposed to be half game half film, people who bitch about the stories really shouldnt be playing it, thats the type of game it is.
Lifespan:

Graphics: I disagree with Max-E here as i think the graphics are of vast improvement, i went back, compared and compared etc. i found that metal gear 3 has great enhancments in terms of visual effects, for instance water, which is hard to recreate and fight sequences look solid and feel sorta real.

Its not about graphics but its about the games feel so, the controlelr vibrations work really well inthis game, if ihad dolby surround this game would feel like ur right in the heat of the action. The vibrations get more suddan and powerful as you get into tighter spots, you can hear and sometimes feels Snakes heart beating with tension, it really did amaze me.

Lifespan: Clocked it in 15 horus on normal, but i dont consider that finished, once icomplete extreme and European Extreme, thats when i have finished it.

Extras: Snake vs Apes is clever addition, with the monkeys from ape escape being ruinaways that you have to capture: I found this game dull and unnecessery,i would have preferred more cutscenes or some VR missions(but its the 60's so VR probably wasn't invented........ whatever)

They'll probably add some form of VR missions or extra little goodies when it comes to Xbox and PC.

Ugg... I cannot believe you are going to wait so long just for some slightly improved textures and something similar to VR missions. Olin, if you would just play the game on PS2, you would realize how awsome it is and how graphics aren't always everything.

Just give it a rental and play for about 20 minutes, not skipping any cutscenes. If you absolutely cannot stand the textures, fine. Your loss..

Well all i'm saying is that's a long time to wait for such an amazing game. Especially when you think about the minor improvements that they might make to the PC and Xbox versions.

Exactly, i wish i had patience when it came to byuing games, but idont.

Besides the only graphical improvements ican the Xbox will do is lighting, maybe soften the visuals a bit. But this is only cause the lighting effects in Halo are so good.

Either way, if i had the choice between a ps2 game and axbox one, i would buy xbox, of course iwould need an xbox first.

I agree with Piggus though, give it a rent.

What does Halo have to do with MGS3?

Renting it would just be a waste of money.

MGS substance blows. Such a fucked up story. Wierd ass camera angles, and overall pretty boring. (I hate that fuckin old retard the end, it took me like 2 hours to find the fucker then he shoots me and I wake up like 30 mins away in a cell, then go back, get shot faster, then go back and save, then when I loaded he shot me right away in a movie! So lame.

MGS doesnt have anything to do with Halo, i never said it did. I said that i cant see the graphics improving for the Xbox version of mgs3, the only graphics isee improving are lighting visuals, and possibly soften looking graphics.

This is only because isaw how good lighting was in Halo.

Xbox has 64MB of RAM (not including the virtual memory on the hard disk) and PS2 has 31MB. They could quite easily add some better textures along with crisper lighting effects and such if they wanted to.
