Test Drive: Eve of Destruction

Your typical racer this is not. From the moment you flick on the power you know this is going to be a totally different experience.

You start out in this tiny "home" world where you can drive around or challenge other drivers to races. It really isn't all that interesting, but that isn't where the bulk of the gameplay lies. No it's in the events.

The events include many staple carnage events you see at the local farm show. Things like Demolition Derby, 8 track, Gauntlet, where the player climbs behind the wheel of a hearse and tries to finish a set number of laps while the rest of the field attempts to stop them; Trailer Race, a new brand of racing event, where players compete while towing various types of trailers and must finish the race with something resembling a trailer still attached, and soccer to name a few. The variety of events is quite nice.

The games career mode is fairly good. It's basically like your average racer, you race and win cash and purchase new/better cars and can perform minor upgrades. Don't expect the glitz and glamor that's in games like Need for Speed Underground. These cars are basically piles of junk. But alas, that is where the beauty of this game lies. It strips the stereotypes surrounding racing games and replaces it with a hardcore "redneck" vibe (as quoted numerous times during short videos in the game.)

Believe it or not, this is a racing game with damage physics. The more you get damaged the more you have to repair (obviously.) But there's one slight difference, after you take damage there is a certain percent that you can't repair. So your actual ability to take damage goes down.

The physics and controls are really good as well. The controls are very crisp and tight. When you move the analog stick your car responds immediately. This is one game where you can't blame your crappy driving on the controls or game.

Graphics. Oh yes can't forget these, since it seems this area is of upmost importance. I have to say the graphics are astounding for a game of this nature. The smoke from engines failing, the dirt flying up, tire smoke, everything looks wonderful. The backgrounds are very clear and crisp as well.

This is by far one of the best games I've played recently. I bought NFSU2 2 days before this purchase, and amazingly enough I havn't touched it since I bought this.

Overall this game is just sheer fun to play. It takes some basics that you see in other racers, but adds it's own little twist to it. If you like racing games but want a change, I highly recommend you pick up this game.

There are two downsides though. The soundtrack is quite limited and stereotypical. Guaranteed you'll hear a song and say "I've heard this in sssoooo many games." But of course...that's what a stereo is for. And the career mode is a little short for my liking. But if you have some friends over, this will provide a hell of alot of entertainment.

yea i played this game with my frined i had the bus and he had the grandma car or g-car and well i tottaly killed him. this game is a good time with friends and its just fun overall 8.9

i've got this game and it is a great game, but, after awhile it can get boring.

thats the same thing with everygame. EVENTUALLY it will get boring but after a couple of months later it wont be so boring

I think it has huge replay value. The events are so much damn fun. And there's a lot of them to go around.
