Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

I didn't want to re write this review, so it's pretty much a copy paste from the forum I origionaly posted it on.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

2004 was an exelent year for gamers. Top titles included World of Warcraft, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, and of course, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is as good or better than most of the games I have just mentioned. And these are the reasons why:

MGS3 is set in the 1960s during the cold war era. Snake, the main character, is sent into the soviet mountains to rescue a rocket scientist named Sokolov, who is working on a revolutionary mobile tank known as the Shagohod. Or Metal Gear. The Shagohod is capable of launching nuclear IRBMs up to 6000 miles from almost anywhere in the world.

The graphics in MGS3, for a PS2 game, are absolutely stunning. The game features rich, detailed enviroments that really make you feel as though you're in the jungle. Konami did an amazing job at optimizing the game to run well on the PS2 hardware. There are even some water and shading effects that technically, the PS2 shouldn't be able to do.

MGS3's sound design is nearly perfect. Unlike MGS 1 and 2, MGS3 has no on-screen radar. Listening for movement, radio chater, and voices in the jungle make the game seem much more realistic than prevous titles. You also remain more alert of your suroundings. All of the weapons and sound effects sound great. Especially some of the more high-powered weapons.

The gameplay in MGS3 has recieved and overall facelift, but the camera and controles remain realatively the same. Two stand out features in MGS3's gameplay is the inclusion of a survival mode and a camo selection system. If Snake is injured, the player must cure him by selecting the required medical suplies needed to treat an injury. If Snake is losing stamina, he can hunt for food and eat. Snake's performance in stealth and shooting decreases as his stamina runs low, so hunting for food is a must. The Camo system is a real life saver. How well you are hidden from your enemies is displayed as a percentage in the upper right hand corner of the screen. You can choose diferent types of camo and face paint through a menue. Next to each type of camo or paint is another percentage telling how much more the camo will add or subtract to your current percentage.

If it's one movie I would like to see based on a game, it would be Metal Gear Solid 3. This game has the best storyline of any game I have ever played. Better than San Andreas, Final Fantasy, you name it. The characters are some of the most memorable and origional. You have a groupe of military specialists with uniqe talents such as the ability to controle bees (The Pain) and you have EVA, a suposed soviet spy who helps Snake through sticky situations throughout the game. There are many others that I will not mention because it is more fun to discover them for yourselves. The story is interesting and sad especially at the end. Your eyes may water up a bit in the last sequences. I almost guarentee it.

Overall, MGS3, is one of 2004's best games. Everything about it is absolutely amazing. A rental is not enough for this one. Buy it and buy it now.

Graphics - 10
Sound - 10
Gameplay - 10
Story - 10

Overall 10/10

I have a few trailers on a PSM demo, and after watching them, I did feel watery in the eyes, which is saying alot since I don't cry. For the first time, I felt moved by a video game, or atleast what bits I saw in the trailer. I do plan on getting this game, because it looks great.

The music is one of the key factors in setting the tone for certain scenes and situations. Which is one of the reasons why I gave sound design such a high score. The music almost reminds my Lord of the Rings. I believe Harry Gregson Williams did the music in MGS3, and it's perfect throughout the entire game.

I'm gonna have to agree with you on this. If any game deserves 10/10 it's this one! And the replay value is great, too! I'm already on my 3rd time around!
