Continuity question?

If TLAD takes place in the same time as the beginning to middle parts of GTA IV's storyline, why are all the bridges open (mainly Alderney)? Was this ever explained?

It wasn't really explained well, I do feel originally they were suppose to have the police guarding the bridges as usual but not blocking the path because I'm not sure but remember hearing something about Full American Citizens being immune from the ban. But even then it doesn't make much sense with the bridges just being fully open and free.

Gameplay wise they obviously opened it up because the players will already know the areas and Johnny's story takes place all over the city from the get go.

There are several continuation errors. Such as in the intro movie, Niko is seen walking on a sidewalk in Alderny, when at the time he was stuck clear over in Broker. Also,
you kidnap Roman, and then immediately get called to go to the museum for the diamond mission, when in GTAIV there is quite a gap between those two missions.

Yeah, Johnny's missions are all in order but Niko has more, there is a thread over a GTAForums that lists all the GTA4 and TLAD missions in order of events so you can switch back and forth to keep it all matching. With TLAD they couldn't exactly turn around after the kidnap mission and say "OK, Now wait a few in-game days for that Slavic fuck to catch up" could they? For gaps like that I think it's just best to presume a few days have passed or do some Gang wars and Races or chill out with terry and Clay to give the illusion that time has passed, whilst Johnny is chilling out playing Air Hockey and Cards, Niko is gunning his way through the next batch of missions.
