Question What are my best upgrade options for increasing GTA4 framerate?

I recently upgraded my computer because I wanted to play GTA 4.
I'm sure there are many others in a similar predicament.
I am well over the minimum requirements and get a pathetic 5 frames/second
I have an ASUS M3N78-PRO M/B, Phenom Quad Core 9950 2.6mhz, 500mb sata2 hdd
4gb (2x2gb) ddr2 1066 mhz RAM, 500watt Case power supply (with a 6pin pci- e plug)
I am currently using the onboard Ge Force 8300 graphics and running Windows XP corp 32bit.
Should I upgrade my OS to xp64? or vista 64?
Buy 2 more memory sticks?
Buy another hdd and run an array?
Buy another graphics card? YES BUT WHICH ONE?
Should I buy one to run in conjunction with the onboard graphics?
What cards will I be able to run without having to upgrade my power supply.
If I go for a big card what power supply will I need?
I am on a limited budget and can't buy everything at once.
What will give me the most BANG FOR MY BUCKS?
All contributions welcome.

well i think u know that but obviously a performance heavy game like GTA 4 isn't gonna run well on Onboard graphics
as for which card, I'm no expert in what card is good right now, maybe someone else could help u decide on one
as for your other question i don't think it is possible to run any other graphics card in conjunction with your onboard graphics
As far as I know you can only run more than one card either in CrossFire or SLI and they need to be the same card I think.
Your best bet is to get advice from people who are running the game well as far as which graphics card works best.

Well GTA4 is intensive in nearly everything on the computer, anything that you decide to upgrade (CPU, Memory, or Video Card) will help the framerate.

Q: Should I upgrade my OS to xp64? or vista 64?

A: if you are on 4GB memory I would hope you are on a 64 bit-OS, as 32 bit can't address more than 3.2GB of memory

Q: Buy 2 more memory sticks?

A: The more memory you buy the better, I read an article that GTA4 will benefit up to 12GB of ram (Yes no joke, its unoptimized very badly)

Q: Buy another hdd and run an array?

A: Raid won't help on game performance at all so leave that out.

Q: Buy another graphics card? YES BUT WHICH ONE?

A: That depends on how much you are willing to spend on one, since you are on a Quad Core you would need one on a PCI Express Slot.

Q: Should I buy one to run in conjunction with the onboard graphics?

A: No once you buy a new video card, you can disable the onboard video via the motherboard Bios

Q: What cards will I be able to run without having to upgrade my power supply?

A: that depends on the specifications of the power supply, 500 watt is good, but also the +12 amperage is more important so you need to find that out as well.

Q: If I go for a big card what power supply will I need?

A: That depends on the video card and power supply you can afford to buy together.

Q: What will give me the most BANG FOR MY BUCKS?

A: Currently in your system, a video card upgrade will be a good starting point.

Edit: This thread should have a sticky, good info for anyone that wants to run this game.
