At first when i played Gta IV i thought to myself this sucks there is no fun in it at all but after a while playing it i was hooked, just the graphics and realism are a big win for me
i realize that if San Andreas was re-released with the graphical quality of IV then it would definitely be the best but the point is it isn't
so for now IV is the champ

GTA SA and GTA III -great story and charactere and atmosphere-
GTA VC -the 80's atmosphere and my first gta !-
GTA 2 - good memorie and it's a incredible classic's-
gta IV is just the worst for me because it's less the "gta feel's" (the fun and more)

For the amount of stuff to do, I'd have to say San Andreas. Jets, cheats galore, customization, unique vehicles, etc. But, going back to the PS2 games after playing 4 feels so archaic. Everything is so much more polished in 4, the car physics and damage, ragdoll, AI, cover system. Not to mention the graphics, obviously its on newer hardware, but even last gen GTA's graphics were obviously behind everything else of the time.
At first, I hated 4. No planes, slow cars, using the shoulder buttons to drive, fewer weapons and basic cheat codes.
But for the biggest wow factor at the time, GTA3 hands down. I remember my cousin letting me play it, before which the closest thing I had played was Driver 2, and man, I never wanted to leave his house! I went out asap and bought it, luckily before all the age limit hoopla from the news, cause I was 15 at the time. Getting Vice City proved to be a bit more difficult, had to ask for that for christmas, and I just knew my parents wouldn't get me it, and low and behold, there it was!
Wait, what were we talking about?

EPIC BUMP lol
I like San Andreas the most.
I like everything in it, the gangs, the music, the enviroments, the (side)missions and everything besides that like the fun cheats, the gym, et cetera.
But GTA III was a great game also.
It had everything the game needed back in 2001. I can't tell how many pedestrians I killed as a six-year-old.
III was epic, but San Andreas had far much more. That's why GTA III is not my all time favorite.
Booo! That's off-topic!

Vice City is my favorite with San Andreas being a close 2nd.
Vice City is too good. From the main character, to the story, soundtrack, the city's atmosphere etc. everything is on point. Also, after completing the game 10+ times i came to the conclusion that Vice City has the perfect length if i want to replay the story.
San Andreas gets props for adding a crazy amount and variety of side activities and a huge world on top of all the great features we've come to expect from the GTA series. On the other hand, when i try to replay San Andreas, i usually get bored by the time i arrive or i'm about to leave San Fierro, i guess that's what happens when a game is really long and you've already replayed it a million times.
GTA III is good but i've always thought the game loses some steam when it abandons the charming streets of Portland and the mafioso theme in favor of the generic looking buildings and streets of the 2nd and 3rd islands and the italian mafia stops being the main force in the story.
