Say Goodbye to Idol?

So, a lot of people are speculating on GTA IV's impact on the Iron Man box office. I ws thinking today, though, what about American Idol? I know this isn't a factor for Brits, Aussies, etc., but that show is pretty big in the US. Problem is, the game releases on performance night. Is there any chance in hell that anyone will be watching Idol instead of playing GTA IV? I'm sure the audiences aren't exactly the same (lots of little girls watch Idol but don't play GTA IV), but there still HAS to be a hit in the number of votes they receive on the 29th. Even so, I bet they announce "a record number of votes cast" on the results show because they are basically full of crap anyway. But I'd like to see the Nielsen's - those usually don't lie.

Doubt it'd be any significant difference. Only retarded faggots watch idol, so they wouldn't be playing GTAIV anyway.. At least not on release day.

Like Iron Man, it probably depends on the demographics that watch it. I know I wouldn't see Iron Man or watch any Idol show even if GTA IV wasn't coming out, even though I am a 18-24 male (for a few more months at least).

Do you really think that anyone on this forum watches idol? Do you really think anyone waiting so eagerly for this game to come out gives a shit about idol?

The answer is no.

Speak for yourself man. I've never been so fucking excited for a video game before. I can't go 2 hours without checking this site. I watch Idol because there actually are good musicians on the show. Granted I've never met anyone with a musical taste as wide as mine. Seriously guys, grow some balls and stop ragging on people for what they do/watch in there freetime. To answer your question: Yes, I do believe it'll have an impact. I'm going to midnight release, which means I'm probably gonna skip sleep, and play all day, then take a brake for food, hygiene(I have to smell good while my brain is rotting), and Idol. But I'm sure that for most everyone that doesn't get it at midnight, Idol would never cross their mind. As for Iron Man, I would definitely go see it under any other circumstances, but this time, It's gonna have to wait till DVD.

I think my point was that the video game was huge. I get what you mean, but Idol has been burnt out. Noone on the show even gets that famous anymore.

I guess my whole point wasn't really to see who watches Idol. My point is, analysts and the media have been focusing on GTA IV's potential impact on box office sales, specifically for Iron Man, since apparently Halo 3 did some damage to the box office when it came out. But what about other types of media, like TV? I used Idol as an example because it happens to coincide day and date with the release of the game. But how much other stuff on TV, in the movies, new music releases, etc., will take a hit because of the GTA IV release? It would be pretty funny to see popular culture kinda retract for a few days around GTA IV. It would basically mean the game was like a giant black hole sucking in all other media around it. And then how long until it expands again and things are back to normal? One week? One month? Can any game have that kind of impact?

I dont think there will be as much of an impact on box office or tv ratings as people are predicting. I still plan on seeing Iron Man the first weekend, even though it will be hard tearing myself away from GTA.

I suppose replies on a GTA forum aren't necessarily going to give the most accurate results as I assume more casual GTA players make up the bulk of sales. But if people who will be playing GTA IV around launch can say they will be forgoing spending money on other entertainment then we could get an idea from that. Personally, like I said above, I won't be forgoing anything other than using my free time to play GTA IV more than other computer/video games I might have played.

I tend to agree, and Pachter tends to agree as well. First, the game comes out on Tuesday and the movie comes out on Friday. I'm sure many people will be able to pull themselves away from their 4-day GTA binge to go see a movie if they wanted to see it in the first place. Second, for Iron Man to be successful it needs such a small percentage of the population to go see it. With Downey, Jr. as lead I think it'll have some crossover appeal and will probably do north of $35 million its first weekend.

TV might take a hit during the week, but it would probably be slight. I don't think too many GTA fans are waiting up nights to watch Desperate Housewives. Shows like The Office or Lost might get a slight reduction in viewership, but fans will just find the episode on iTunes, Hulu, or some other service.

I do think it's pretty exciting, though, to think that a game might have this kind of impact. It certainly is a long way away from the release of Might and Magic II or something like that. It's a real sign that games have entered the mainstream in a big way - perhaps not in who plays them, but certainly in their impact on popular culture. As a gamer, I think that's pretty sweet.

Im seeing Iron Man opening weekend. It's not hard to seperate myself. One is a movie, the other is a game. Games are more personal to me, while I enjoy spending time in a crowded theatre to watch a movie.

I don't think it will have much effect. Going to a movie is a social experience, whereas sitting at home on your a$$ playing GTA singleplayer is not.

Ironman will be a great film, I think GTA IV will not have effect but will put a dent in the box office sales some way. Not just Ironman but other films to
