I'd imagine that he got some sort of punishment from Microsoft for those statements, regardless of the Nextbox's new direction, antagonising the customers is really just a dick move from any perspective. On top of that, his comments are really ignorant of possible customers situations. He seems to be making the assumption that everyone has a nice wonderful, at least 4mbps, always-on internet connection with absolutely no interference issues.

And that's a wrong assumption to make, because while yes, for the most part, the internet is accessible, it isn't 100% accessible, and some people either can't afford it or don't want it. At the minute I'm without internet until the 22nd of this month due to a cockup with BT (I'm currently using internet through my phone's 2GB/month usage). There is no way I am going to buy a console that will essentially be turned into a paperweight when my internet doesn't work, which is a regular occurrence. And there are millions more like me.

And that's why a multi-million dollar company should consider themselves to get with the times, and not allow an arrogant Creative Director bitch at his customers to get with the times.

"The customer is always right" is often an over-used, mis-used quote that people say when trying to get free stuff, and should only be used in context of supply and demand, for instance, this situation. Few people want an always-on connection requirement, so if Microsoft have any sense, they need to take always-on out of their console, or make a massive incentive to purchase it.

He was apparently fired, unsurprisingly.

A part of me understands him being upset though. At brass tacks he's just a guy defending his idea. It just happens to be a particularly bad idea and he happens to be a total dick.

As far as an always online console though, I don't see any reason for it at all. What's the advantage?

People who have access to the various store items and services are statistically much more likely to spend money. There's also the whole blocking of used games issue which is the result of lobbying from big-name publishers, and would require an internet connection most likely. It's a very anti-consumer vision that's going to bite them in the ass if they really go through with it. Can't wait to see how they spin it lol.

EDIT: The date of the event was delayed by the way. It's apparently been pushed back to May 21st.

Can't say I'm too concerned with it being always-online, but I understand the concern people have.

Microsoft will reveal its next-generation Xbox at an event on 21st May, multiple reports have suggested.

The console will launch in "early November", seasoned Microsoft analyst Paul Thurrot has revealed. These details have been independently backed up by The Verge.

Named just "Xbox", Microsoft's machine will be "expensive" and cost around $500 (roughly 326, although likely higher in the UK). A lower price $300 (195) model will also be available with some form of subscription.
Supposed leak.

Not surprised about the always-on DRM, piracy on the Xbox was much more rampant than people seem to realize. Probably easier than the PC since you didn't have to crack anything and just burn the game to a disc. Flashing was as easy as plugging your 360 DVD drive into your PC.

Yeah but it doesn't require you to have your console permenantly offline in fear of having it remotely bricked by MS

lol @ $500.

Either Kinect 2.0 is really expensive to produce, or they're not willing to take an initial loss on every system sold and want to sell at profit instead, hoping that most people will choose the subsidized option.

Mine was never bricked.

It did RROD in the end, so I guess they still got me.

How much did the PS3 go for originally? I remember a few of my Xbox friends claiming it wasn't worth the price tag, I'd be curious to see what they have to say about this. We were 17 then and a lot more prone to stupid console debates than we are now though.

$599 for the better version, but it was almost entirely due to low Cell yields and blu-ray diodes. The Blu-Ray player in the system alone cost over $200. Even at that high price Sony was taking a $200+ hit per system. It's why Ken Kutaragi stepped down and was replaced try the more sensible Mark Cerney. PS3 is doing well now, but it was a financial disaster for a very long time because of the crazy custom hardware. Cell cost something like $400 million to develop. :/

PS4 won't have that issue since it's mainly using off the shelf parts and tech that has been well-established for quite a while. Unlike with PS3, they don't have to build entire factories just for the CPU. It will most likely be $399 and I doubt Sony will take a very big loss even at that price. It's the EXACT same hardware strategy as PS Vita. Everyone thought that would cost over $300 just because it's powerful, and then Sony shut those people up with a $249 price tag.

What's funny about the Xbox possibly costing $500 is it used less powerful hardware than the PS4 (not including Kinect 2). Slower GPU and much slower/cheaper RAM. I'm guessing MS just wants to be profitable right away and is confident in the subsidization model. It works well enough for the 360 anyway.
