A Thought or Two About GTA IV's System Requirements
With a lot of problems emerging among PC gamers, I think it's time to think about system requirements, marketing strategies and PC gaming in general.
As many of you have experienced, GTA IV is a real sledgehammer for your computer. Even people with high-end GPU's are having major framerate issues. Low-end GPU's needn't try running this game, and while mid-enders (8600GT, 3850/70, 9600GT) are now delevering excellent quality for your money, it just isn't enough for GTA IV. All was going so well. New generations of miid-range cards, going around $150-200, seemed to give new life to PC gaming. Suddenly, after years of expensive 8800 series and lack of decent ATI cards, high quality gaming once again became possible for most of us. Untill today, when we see our GPU's crumble under the weight of the otherwise excellent game that is GTA IV.
Maybe, we were just a little over-enthusiastic about the graphics in this game. Expectations were high up since previews reported a significant increase in graphical candy in the PC version, compared to PS3 and Xbox360. I don't remeber Rockstar bragging about this, so it's a bit of our own fault to let our expectations be guided by guys testing GTA IV on fantastic, $3000 gaming rigs.
But Rockstar does state that the game was designed for future computers. Is this wise? Wouldn't it have been better to go easy on present-day computers and, later on, developing patches to boost graphical splendor, instead of what we're getting now, a patch to do the exact opposite in order to make the game playable? I can imagine, in this season of holidays and presents, a lot of people who pick the beautifully designed GTA IV box for their sons, nephews, friends, take a quick glimpse at the system requirement and buy it. After all, who, other than dedicated gamers, knows the exact type of video card in their system? And, more importantly, who can compare the suggested minimal and recommended GPU's to their own without any research? We all know what a mess has been made of GPU names, they don't mean what they stand for. How could a HD2400XT be worse than an X1900 from the same manufacturer? The letters and numbers suggest the opposite of reality.
I'm sorry to conclude, GTA IV is likely to be a step back in the emancipation of PC gamers, instead of a leap forward.
Reactions are most welcome.
Edit: Mods, maybe this thread would fit better in the general GTA IV forum?
