But this goes for alot of old horror movies, they focus so much on the actual horror that you don't really care much about the characters, their isn't much of a friendly atmosphere before the horror kicks in.
A good horror movie (altough I'm sure you're going to debate wether or not this movie is a horrormovie) for me is that you actually care about the characters that are being chased, hunted down or killed. A good example would be a film like 'Last house on the left' I don't know if you've seen that one but you're really waiting anxiously for that satisfying ending .Don't get me wrong though, In general I prefer older movies over newer ones. I'm not exactly talking about Imdb top 250 material here just entertaining movies. I don't think any horror movie could ever really be more then entertaining.
But I really think that movie was underrated (AVP) , AVP2 was a piece of crap but I really like the first part. I'm not that picky regarding storyline in horrormovies, I just think the tension and action scenes in AVP were pretty amusing. I'm not exactly saying it's the best movie out there (not nearly) but yes I enjoyed watching it (and watching it again).
