Max Payne sold 400k units, considered a flop

Quote:

Although Max Payne 3 managed to secure the number two spot in last month's NPD numbers, actual sales figures suggest Rockstar's latest has seriously underperformed. According to NPD stats, Max Payne 3 managed to sell 440K units.

While that number may seem impressive to some, it is a far cry from the first-month sales of Rockstar's big 2011 game, LA Noire. That game sold nearly 900K units, but even that game fell short of industry expectations. With Max Payne selling even fewer copies, it's unsurprising that Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter would call the game "a flop."

Pachter points out the game's eight-year development, and claims "Rockstar put off releasing GTA" to work on MP3. Rockstar has admitted that the long-troubled development of Max Payne 3 eventually required the work of many of its global studios.

It's clear that Take-Two Interactive, parent company of Rockstar, was betting big on Max Payne 3's success. In its last financial report, Take-Two claims retail sell-in of about 3 million units. With only 440K units sold in the US, that means there are a few million units of unsold inventory sitting on store shelves. If you haven't bought Max Payne 3 yet (and by the looks of these numbers, you likely haven't), retail markdowns are likely to happen in the coming weeks.

Bummer.

FUCK OFF, seriously, he gets paid to spout this shit?

Plus, these numbers don't include PC sales, and Max Payne 3 has been in Steam's Top 10 Sellers for the past month, yes, Month, despite it only coming out two weeks ago.

edit: And if there's any proof needed that Pachter is a hack, this is it. "eight-year development", yet Rockstar Vancouver finished off Bully in 2006 before starting any other projects. Max Payne 3 was first revealed in 2009 after Rockstar announced that Rockstar Vancouver had been working on it for OVER A YEAR. Extra studios were put on the project to form "Rockstar Studios" at a later point in which Toronto handled the PC version (after finishing GTA IV PC in Late 2008 followed by EFLC in early 2010), Rockstar London (after finishing Midnight Club LA PSP in 2008) and Rockstar New England (starting from 2008).

The game has had a FOUR/FIVE YEAR DEVELOPMENT time. If you're getting paid to do this shit, at least research it properly!

Well said, Ash!

If what Ash said is true: Not including PC sales then this entire article might as well be condemned to oblivion.

What, doesn't the money for the PC platform count for something?

Grimmy 06-16-2012 05:58 AM

Most of them probably got it from steam and steam doesn't give out any data.

Total lifetime Max Payne 3 sales so far - 1.57 million. http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=max+payne+3

The NGP doesn't count Digital Platform sales, same goes in the UK, they only just started counting Digital Music Sales for the charts in the past year or so!

The only flop here is Pachter. Max Payne 3 has affected Grand Theft Auto through the info drought that we've seen, in that their marketing campaign was focused elsewhere, and that is all.

I havn't got MP3 yet I hope to get it at the steam sale just like I do with all my PC games, I never pay full price for them anymore.

Max Payne 3 shipped 3 million copies at launch, parent publisher Take-Two Interactive announced today as part of its latest financial report. The game shipped last week to a warm critical reception, with one analyst projecting it will go on to sell 4 million copies during its lifetime.

Max Payne 3 has now sold over 1.6 Million copies between the PS3 and Xbox 360 at this point (and physical PC copies), again that's not including copies sold on Steam.

Killerfist 07-03-2012 11:40 AM

Lol.. not counting steam sales is pretty foolish, if you don't have insight in those figures then don't release an ignorant article like this.

But isn't this kinda basic stuff .. high profit = succes? They must be able to see how much money they're making with that game unless they have one crappy accountant.
