Where are people having problems? Most people tend to set the graphics setting too high for their PC with some games and then moan about the low FPS. GTA IV has a calculator on screen in the options and it will tell you if the settings are too high for your system. What the game acknowledges as ok is actually and FPS between 20-30. The console versions only ran at 30fps and the PC Games only ran at 30fps with the Frame Limiter On (San Andreas ran at 25fps). So if your settings are too high and you have Frame Limiter turned on it will underclock the framerate to the nearest stable.

Look around gta-forums. Pretty much everyone with an ATI graphics card is having FPS issues. Even people with high-end cards & CPUs.

nVidia users don't seem to be as plagued, so you'll probably be OK unenergizer.

Thank you guys! Much appreciated!

A 4850 or a 4870 shouldn't have any problems unless they have the weird driver support known for ATi

Thank you XAN. =]

I am worried about my Mobility Radeon X2600 Pro's ability now!

Apparently GTAIV is a poorly optimized game with a horrible porting job. Rockstar should probably release a patch soon...

I'm still waiting until tomorrow when its released in stores.

Chances are, there won't be a patch particularly quickly. If they could fix it quickly, they would have released it working. Might be a while until a patch is released, if one is released at all.

Problem is, people are trying to play the game at Max settings, WHICH WILL cripple your system unless you built it yesterday with all the lastest and fastest parts. A post over at GTAForums.com a member has done an article about running the game in lower graphics improves the framerate a lot and still looks miles better than the console version, so people need to relax when piling on the settings. I mean, it will disapoint a lot of you, but GTA4 is actually quite a power hungry game and running it on Max will look brilliant, but is only for those with Extreme High End Computers.

Ahh, makes me remember the times when I struggled to run San Andreas at 800x600. :P

]This guy has;
amd dual core @ 2.7Ghz
4gb RAM
8800 GTS 512mb

and is getting 15-20fps regardless of what settings he uses.

This guy has;
2.1Ghz dual core
3.5gb ram
GTX260 896mb

and is getting crap performance on even the lowest settings

Just to point out a couple.

The PC forum over at gta-forums is littered with people complaining of similar issues. Mainly revolving around GTX260 and HD4xxx cards I've noticed.

Ash_735 12-02-2008 04:46 PM

Hmm, looking at this, Problem mainly affects ATi Graphics Cards and AMD CPU's, which will be interesting to see as I have an AMD CPU and tomorrow I'll find out how well it runs.

rappo 12-02-2008 04:53 PM

Well I've got an nVidia card and an Intel CPU so I'm guessing I'll be clean, but this is still a really sucky problem. Makes you wonder what the issue is - surely Rockstar Games tested the game on all sorts of systems and hardware combinations before releasing it... For their sake I hope it's some minor software issue that a patch could fix.

.:Mouldy Punk:. 12-02-2008 04:55 PM

I always thought it'll be hit n miss whether or not my 6800GS (overclocked a fair bit) will be able to cope with the game on the lowest settings - but all this nonsense has pretty much sealed it really.

I can start downloading it in 6 minutes, so I'll find out tomorrow if well my PC can run the game, or if it can at all.

If not, new graphics card time me thinks. 'tis the bottleneck. Probably get me a HD4670 assuming all the issues with ATI cards are fixed by then.

rcguy150 12-02-2008 05:08 PM

I'm running with Nvidia and AMD. I hope its not as bad as they say..
