Thailand bans Grand Theft Auto IV

Quote:

Copies of Grand Theft Auto IV have been pulled in Thailand after a teenager confessed to murdering a taxi driver.

The 18-year-old high school student is accused of stabbing the cab driver to death by trying to copy a scene from the game.

The biggest video game publisher in the south-east Asian country, New Era Interactive Media, has told retailers to stop selling GTA IV.

It is due to be replaced by another video game title.

Death penalty

Thai newspapers say the teenager, whose name has been withheld, was arrested while trying to steer a cab backwards out of a Bangkok street with the driver still in the back seat.

Police claim the 18-year-old confessed to stealing the taxi and said he killed the 54-year-old driver after he fought back. The teenager could face the death penalty if he is found guilty.

Bangkok police Captain Veerarit Pipatanasak said: "He wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game.

"He wanted money to play the game. His parents, who work as civil servants, did not have enough money to give him."

Thailand's Culture Ministry has recently been pushing for tougher regulation of games like Grand Theft Auto.

It wants stricter age ratings and restrictions on the hours that people can play games in arcades.

Ladda Thangsupachai, director of the ministry's Cultural Surveillance Centre, said: "This time-bomb has already exploded and the situation could get worse. Today it is a cab driver, but tomorrow it could be a video game shop owner."

Damn, so the whole country of Thailand can nolonger buy GTA IV because of one psychopathic a$$ wipe.

By the sounds of that article he doesnt even have the game yet.. How could the game even be blamed.. If anything they should ban being poor enough to have to rob taxi drivers to buy video games.

Fuck that aye.

This is why GTA has a bad name in some communities, I bet that boy has some sort of mental disability that is also 'withheld'.

Jack Thompson entering the scene in five... four... three... two...

They have to blame the fucking game for it, sucks to be in Thailand if you're a GTA fan then. It's the person that does it not the game.

De7erminist 08-04-2008 08:28 AM

Scene in the game? There's certainly not a scene in the game where you're supposed to kill Taxi Drivers.

Tyler 08-04-2008 08:59 AM

Thats not right at all.

You dont shove the taxi driver in the back seat, you leave him on the streets, duh! Remember, JUST LIKE THE GAME! :smash:

Isn't Thailand like Pirate capital of the world anyway? Anyone in Thailand who hasn't got it can just get it like normal anyway from their markets upon markets and street corners. :P

I think the law stops him for doing anything for 10 years.

So we gotta increase that countdown another 315,569,260 seconds.

But yeah, the world isn't going to get any better if people keep trying to blame unrelated things for their problems. Video Games AND mental disabilities aside, the kid still did something that he knows damn well was against the law, and he is more accountable than an interactive work of fiction will EVER be.

They still have the fucking death penalty there?
Well i guess you learn something new every day

thats very true... no matter wherever people are, they can always ind ways to get games/movies/music if they really want to.

Well, I don't live in Thailand so.. HA HA.

phreak 08-04-2008 10:54 AM

The world will be 1% better when people stop blaming video games for violence.

If I was the president of a country and I made all the decision then my first one would be to have a no excuses law that when you do kill somebody, you can't blame movies or video games or music for your actions, you choose to kill a person, forms of entertainment don't make people decide to kill someone, their brain do.

That Thai kid made his decision to kill the taxi driver and he knew it was illegal but he did it anyway and because he said GTA IV made him do it, all the people in Thailand will miss out now all because of what one person did.

You do realise the death penalty is still used in all but a few of the United States? Some states execute more people than others, sure, and some haven't executed anyone in quite a while, but the US also 'has" the death penalty.
