Is Niko Serbian?

Sorry, it's just confusing how on some forums I visit, people say that Niko is confirmed to be Serbian rather than Russian.. is this true? Is it confirmed, or do some of you people that own the game already know this kind of info?

Grimmy 04-27-2008 06:24 AM

He's Eastern European. It isn't confirmed from what country he's from.

masteratt 04-27-2008 06:26 AM

Polish [from Poland] I believe.

In one of the previews, they said in a firefight, the gang members would say "DIE YOU POLISH SCUM!" or something.

yeh like bak in the day wen claude didnt hav a name

Grimmy 04-27-2008 06:28 AM

In one of the trailers they also call him Russian. They just assume he's Polish or Russian.

think of the controversy that wuld spark.Im almost sure we wont hear such a xenophobic line in the game

Okay then, a new thought lol- Maybe it's a joke.

No-one knows which Eastern city he is from and they just keep assuming different things.

Antonio Montana 04-27-2008 06:38 AM

I mean, it's said Vlad refers to Niko as "Ah, that Serb!"; when Roman hears Niko's not that good at English, says: "Ah, it's better than my Serbian!"..

ah rite maybe i didnt get it cuz im partially dead inside

Daarko 04-27-2008 06:51 AM

You know, he could be serbian, but i doubt.
Cuz' in serbian, Bellic would NEVER be spilled with 2 L's . i Would be Belic, if he was serbian, bosnian og croatian and i am croatian so i know what im talking about. But maybe ROckstar don't know that so they just assume it is spelled the same way if hes serbian, russian og ukrianian or whatever. :)

KreZeL 04-27-2008 07:16 AM

he is not from poland/,, belic,, is not a polish surname

unfortunately

The point is that they mixed Croatian name Niko and Serbian surname Belić (or Bellic in English). Probably because they didn't think much about it. Who cares, the best solution is Eastern European, so everyone gets satisfied.

But keep in mind, Niko Bellic definitely isn't Russian or Polish name. Trust me.

He's definetly NOT Russian, I accidentally watched some gameplay vids after the IGN review and during one conversation, one guy was going on about Niko and his accent and assumed he was Russian, Niko kept replying with "I'm not from Russia!", it was a funny conversation, especially this part "Hey man, what kind of money do you guys spend in Russia?", "I don't know, I've never even been to Russia!".

Perhaps R* disguised his identity?

I'm actually Croat with the name Niko. Like many have mentioned the name Niko is a more Central-European name. Nikola or Nikolai posses a more Balkan feel. His last name can't be pin pointed either as no ex-Yugoslavian last name is spelt with a double L, and our language is all basically the same just different dialects spoken.

I think it's best for the wider audience his identity is kept hidden unless there's a mention of his homeland or something in reference too in the game.

I'd say he was definitely from a former Yugoslav country as it is mentioned that he fought in the Bosnian War. I also read something along the lines of "if your village was under attack do you run or fight?". This would suggest he is of the race being opressed, which would therefore make him bosniak. If he is a bosniak however he would most likely be muslim which i doubt he is. I don't think there is enough evidence to say which race is is from as Rockstar have deliberately avoided any racial tensions between FYR countries.
