A jumping Italian plumber with a moustache?
Nostalgia? The early Mario games pretty much mainstreamed gaming all by themselves.
Super Mario 64 pioneered full horizontal and vertical exploration.

A heard load of Fanboys who won't stop at anything until you see things their way and if you don't then you're stupid!

Mario is so awesome. Childhood hero (of videogames) so I always love Mario. Still play the old mario games like 2 and 3..Super Mario Bros 3 is my fav though, with the introduction of the feather hat. GTA is a different genre so you cant really compare them or anything, especially having different protagonists.

In terms of what was more influential, Mario, obviously. There probably wouldn't be a GTA without Mario.
Linear gameplay that feels like freedom, GTA has freedom that feels like linear gameplay.

Mario paved the way for 3D platformers like Banjo Kazooie and Conkers Bad Fur Day. Which is why I love him.
Mario 64 was my favourite childhood game, I cannot compare him to GTA right now as it is my favourite current game. Ask me again in 10 years.

Game was released 1996 and I was 10 years old at the time, now I'm 21 & still think its a toss up between super mario 64 and zelda: ocarnia of time was the best game I have ever played. Almost seems like in the new era its Zelda's Twilight Princess & Super Mario Galaxy, so the new gen kids will now have a #1 game to look to for comparison reasons. Haven't played Galaxy, but nothing will ever beat mario 64, not even the remake for the DS. :p
Oh, and Banjo & Conkers were made by the same developer, i believe on the exact same engine too, incase you didnt know.
Anyone know that the new Banjo game will be coming out on the Xbox 360? Going to be weird not on Nintendo, but oh well. Thats what we get for microsoft buying out Rare.

Well RARE worked on a lot on N64 games so you could say they were owned by Nintendo back then, now they arn't, Microsoft have grabbed them. :P

Nostalgia of 64 aside, Galaxy comes pretty damn close.

It's gotta be GTA, I'm not sure why, but I enjoy the GTA's more than Mario. The thing is I can't do Super Mario 64, it's too hard for me! :P
With all due respect, you seem to dismiss a lot of good things for silly reasons. :P

Mario will always be bigger.
Mario, with enough mushrooms, could stomp all over any GTA city.

That's good to hear, but it doesnt surprise me. Zelda: Twilight Princess didn't beat Orcania Of Time because: The crappy "twilight" filler... that just prolonged the game pointlessly, but it was all good, just not phenomenal like Orcania, I'd love if Nintendo did a Wii Re-release with updated graphics. That would be so awesome.
Galaxy isn't as influential as 64 was. It just takes the 64 formula, and perfects it in a pretty much literal way.
Graphics design is on par with all but the most graphically intensive XBOX 360 titles, the music is some of the best I've heard in any game to date (yet it also keeps a lot of classic tunes, like the "down the pipes" tune from the 2D Marios, and even the "before Bowser" music from 64), the game is long (50 hours is said for 120 stars, and I've heard something happens to literally double that amount once you reach that number), and the controls and automatic camera are few things short of flawless.
