My computer that I got back in 2004 is getting old and slow. I have always wanted to build a custom pc for myself but the one thing I was always unsure of is… what parts to buy?
So can anyone provide me with a list of what parts to get? I want the highest performance etc.
+rep for people who help :)

What's your budget? If I provide you with a list of the highest end parts possible, you'll likely be spending over $5000. :P

Go for dual core. Screw 64bit for now. Future technology that didn't really catch on. I jumped on the 64bit bandwagon, been using 32bit windows & linux since because the support for 64bit is absolutely rubbish (although getting better) and any performance gain really isn't worth all the hassle.
So yeah, go for a multicore CPU. DX10.1 graphics card. If they're not out yet, they will be soon so wait. Don't get a DX10 card now because it will very soon be obsolete. 2GB RAM minimum. Pay attention to speeds though, don't just get some crappy $20 RAM that runs as slow as fuck. Similarly, go for fast SATA hard drives rather than slower IDE ones.

Do you actually want a list of all the parts required to get a computer running? If so then I'll post a list later when I get home.

Yep :)
I want a list of high performance parts for gaming etc

Thanks for the heads up on the DX10 card. Btw is it hard to find XP now? Or should i get Vista?

You can't (officially atleast) get anything better than DX9 on XP, so yes. Get Vista if you want to play games. If you get XP, there's no point having a DX10 or DX10.1 card because it'll downgrade itself to DX9.

a DX10 card will still give him better performance in DX9 games, so in a way its not pointless at all if he stays on XP, Plus if vista gets better later on he will have the DX10 benifit later :)

I don't really see the point in waiting for DX10.1 cards..? It's not like it's what DX10 should have been?
what you get though is the performance boost of the new generation of cards.
Running crysis in DX10 mode is just plain stupid, as it looks the same as Crysis in DX9 mode with some config tweaks which doesn't butcher your framerate.
Vista kills performance if you compare to XP by a medium sized ammount.
DX 10.1? Worthless
People just bought a card with DX10 and now it's pretty much outdated. But no sane developer would do 10.1 at this moment
DX10.1 is just a ruse to sell more hardware with no benefit, its definately worthless I agree.
Even DX10 has very little visual difference which is also true (might change later). But again if you want better performance in DX9 games, thier isn't anything wrong with running a DX10 card on XP

Well here's a basic run down of what you'll be needing...
- Motherboard
- CPU
- Ram (Memory)
- Hard Drive
- CD/DVD Drives
- Graphics Card
- Sound Card (If not on Motherboard)
- PSU
- Case
Just check out what's good for your price and match them all up, seriously, that's all there is to building a computer, like one big Jigsaw.
