December 5, 2007 - The most high-octane racing series this side of the Mississippi (and the other side as well) is just about set to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in January with the release of Burnout Paradise. While you will have to wait until next month in order to play the full game, you're only days away from getting a taste of it as a downloadable demo is set to hit on December 13th on both the PS3 and 360.

The demo starts you off in a Hunter Cavalry, a slow but reasonably strong ride. Right out of the junkyard, which will serve as your main vehicle hub throughout the full game, it starts off all banged up, but driving through a nearby auto repair shop will fix it up right away. You needn't actually stop in the shop to get it repaired, which allows you to get repairs while in the middle of events to help fix any damage you've taken.

You'll be able to take the Hunter through what looks like maybe 1/10th of the entire map, which is gigantic, so the playable demo area is actually quite large. You're confined to a piece of the downtown district for the demo, so there's plenty of traffic and tight turns to take. You'll have to wait for the full game to get out into the country side and really test your drifting abilities, but the demo area gives you plenty of jumps to take to the air with.

You'll have to wait for the full game to get behind the wheels of these cars.
These jumps play perfectly into one of the three events that you'll find in the demo, a Stunt challenge. When you start the challenge, you're given two minutes to rack up at least 50,000 stunt points, which you earn by hitting jumps, drifting, crashing through objects and generally driving chaotically. Stunts are strung together so long as you keep racking up the points, and boosting helps with this as you constantly earn points while you boost. Multipliers are earned by way of jumps, billboards, flat spins off of jumps and barrel rolls. You'll find a series of little barrel roll jumps scattered throughout the city where one edge of the ramp is raised a bit, allowing your car to twist through the air. Completing a rotation is tricky, but nailing a jump will earn you a 2X multiplier while everything else is a 1X. The Stunt challenge is the thing we've had the most fun with as you don't need to worry about where you're headed, and you've got to keep thinking on your toes (or wheels as the case may be).

The other two events you'll find are a race, which takes you through the bulk of the playable area, and a Burning Route, which is a timed run from one spot to another. The other main point of interest you'll find here is a paint shop, which at least in terms of the demo will give you a new, random paint scheme when you drive through it.

As for other stuff to do, Burnout Paradise tracks a number of extra goodies that you can "collect". There are Burnout billboards scattered throughout the demo that you can smash through, upon which a counter will pop up to tell you how many you've found. Likewise, you can crash through construction barriers and are shown a similar counter for your efforts.

There's plenty of road to burn in the demo.
The demo will be playable online, though we aren't able to hop on just yet as the game tells us that the servers aren't up. Still, you'll be able to join in with your friends and start a Freeburn Online session. Freeburn sessions are where you'll be able to partake in specially designed stunt sessions and the like, but as we can't hop online yet we haven't been able to test them out.

While the demo for Burnout Paradise really only contains three events, there's enough space to drive through and ramps and such to find that it'll entertain you for a good while. And of course, the online possibilities sound like they'll extend its play length even further. Look for the demo to hit the PS3 and 360 online networks on December 13th.

w00t! I can't wait. We'll have to get some online games going when the demo hits. And the cool think about the PS3 version is to get online you just pull over, make three button presses, and you're online with other people. Apparently there's no need to even pause the game.

omg, nice! everybody add each other's PSN's and we'll have a burnout party! w00t!

and yeah, the game looks sick. I saw a video on the gameplay to online, and it's seriously just a few clicks, and you're off. and it's cool that the demo has online, i don't think we've seen that before

Don't you just push one of the directional buttons during free-roam? I do believe I have added everyone on these forums with a PS3 :D

Nice to hear, we didn't get any demo last Thursday, hopefully Burnout isn't the only demo out..

Test Drive Unlimited does then as soon as you start the game, seeing that you have XBL Gold. :P No button presses necessary.

I'll be sure to get this on both consoles, to compare and contrast. I'm also hyped for MCLA, but that's coming up later.

It's apparently up on the UK PSN store and XBLM. Should be up on the US store within the next couple of hours.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's up on the US store as well. :D

And holy crap, PSN is quick today. Downloading at about 1mb/s.

Got it after I posted on 360. It's okay...Online was kinda cool, but sucks when it's just 4 player. I don't know how it stacks up in comparison to the other Burnouts, but this one was alright.

Game's not bad. I still think that it doesn't live up to Burnout Takedown but it's only a demo so things can only get better. Crash physics are very nice though.

I loved Burnout: Takedown so much it wasn't even funny.

Time to download Paradise :)

Those head-on ones, Where the two bonnets/hoods cripple, Looks awesome, And it is reallllyyy easy to get a game going, And I don't think their was any lag, But then again there it's only 4Max :D

Piggus
12-13-2007, 08:21 PM
Yeah that's one thing that surprised me. There was hardly any lag, and we had people from the US, UK, and Australia as far as I know.

2 GTAG games I'm guessing, since we have more than 4 people that will probably download this. :p

Nediar

Downloaded for the 360.

It's pretty nifty how you can beat other peoples challenges like longest drift and stuff and it just pops up saying "NEW RECORD".
Makes me wet.

Nifty game altogether. Only Burnout game I've played since Burnout 1. :zero:

I had a drift of like 385 and led the room I was in. But I didn't play for long.

Yeah it does, It uses it for your picture on your license you get at the beginning, You just have to have it set-up and it does everything itself, If you don't then it uses your PSN Picture on it instead.

DJ Nick
12-14-2007, 01:11 PM
Ahh, i used it just there, and it was somewhat fun being caught :P
The camera i was using was an Eyetoy and it came out nice and clear, not sure how the other people received it, but Piggus, i just saw you come online there, and was about to invite you but my game crashed, believe it or not. :(

Piggus
12-14-2007, 01:25 PM
And apparently a lot of cameras are supported as well. Even the Xbox Live vision camera works really well on PS3. :P

EDIT: Haha! Nice picture Nick. My friend is playing right now. >__<

I downloaded this last night, seems alright. They've used the Midnight Club style of free roam rather than the previous games menus to select events, keeps it fresh I guess. I'd like to try it out online with some of you guys but can't for a while, I'm heading off to a friend's wedding for a couple of days.

What's your PSN or GamerTag?

Edit: got it on PS3. It sucks, HARD. Gave me the 480p problem again. Strange since Uncharted is 720p only and yet it ran just fine. Skate was right on too. I just don't get why this has to happen.

The demo sucked. This isn't Burnout at all. I'm not buying this.

Piggus
12-15-2007, 12:08 AM
Have any of you tried the tilt controls on the PS3 version? It's surprisingly good. I wouldn't substitute it over the analogue sticks, but it's fun to mess around with every once in a while given that it's much better than in any other racing game I've played that's used it.

I don't like that they've dropped the traffic checking. Will take a lot of getting used to but doesn't spoil the game entirely.

Slim Trashman
12-15-2007, 04:53 PM
How big is the demo (file size) & is it worth checking out?

Shadow Conception
12-15-2007, 05:00 PM
700mb, worth checking out.

Doesn't feel like classic Burnout at all though, like Himuro said. The free roam doesn't suit Burnout at all; feels more like a generic NFS game now.

I've never even played Burnout so it shouldn't make a difference to me. However, NFS has IMO been horrible ever since Underground.

5tatic
12-15-2007, 05:57 PM
Underground 2 was very good out of their post-hotpursuit2 games.

Neil
12-15-2007, 05:58 PM
I thought the first NFS Underground was a great game and it really went downhill from there. I'm going to buy ProStreet when it comes down to an acceptable price but for now I'll just make do with the wonderful PGR4!
