what is a good free program to record in game footage by just pressing 1 key.
You can use Fraps. Though the free version will only record 30 seconds max per clip i'm sure you can find a way to get the full version for free.

i downloaded gamecam off their website can not get it to record
Gamecam? Have you downloaded it from here :

If you decided not to go with Fraps i can't help you since i don't know which program your talking about
