IGN Theory: Our Best Bet IS GTAIV Is An MMO

Our best guess is that GTA IV is in fact an MMO, but since we don't know this for sure, Grand Theft Auto is deserving of top spot on our list. The series that revolutionized console gaming is set in a large, open city filled with thugs of ill repute. GTA is screaming to be an MMO. Just imagine creating a unique character and exploring a massive city where hundreds of other users are all looking to get ahead. It's a dog eat dog world, they say, and you want to be the biggest dog in the virtual city. Nothing could be better than organizing a drive-by to take down a rival gamer who's been edging in on your territory. With the possibility for massive territorial battles, on-the-fly drag races and untold citywide bloodshed, GTA has the potential to be one of the great MMOs of all time. Of course this is just their theory but i was thinking about it and GTA would make an awsome MMO, I could imagine having your own game (GTAgaming gang). Tearing apart other gangs and trying to take over as much territory as you can, But sadly i doubt it will happen. I cant see how Rockstar would impliment it, I have never played WoW so i dont know how that works.

I personally love this idea, But i hope if an MMO GTA was released it would be a seperate game to GTAIV. \.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see a GTA MMO?

I'd hate a GTA MMO game and if GTA IV goes in this direction, then I'm afraid I won't be interested in it at all.

This wouldn't be good as the whole game, but just for online play. No custom characters in story, you can't have a story with a custom guy :rolleyes:

If GTA4 is MMO I will not purchase. Period. I like a game to be a personal experience. Not interested in the socialist aspects of MMO games in the slightest. However, I would not object to an MMO option. I just would not want it to be the basis of the game.

As most have said, if it's completley MMO like WoW, I would probably only rent it. If they added online, and made the online an MMO like WoW with character customization and your own gangs, then I'd want to buy it that much more.

This is actually my wet dream.

The best idea would be to have the ordinary single player storyline like GTA 3 was. Like we all are waiting for.

But there could be an online part kinda like SA-MP, but MMO. I love the idea of hundreds of online players in gangwars against eachother fighting for territory or whatever.

It would be a nice online feature, as stated above me by others. But I definitly wouldn't go for that if the gameplay was only MMO.

Gta is like a movie that you participate in, you have a character, you have real actors, you have everything, and if you make it a MMO then it completly kills the whole movie feeling. and not only that but the point of GTA is that you are the ultimate bad ass, how can everyone in a city be the ultimate bad ass.

If GTA goes MMO then it's saying that GTA will no longer be story-driven, which is the halmark of the franchise. It would destory the unique quality and atmosphere of the game.

Can you just imagine a bunch of MMO marks battling over music soundtracks? "You stole my Cloud Song!" :laugh:

I don't think GTA is going MMO. Online multiplayer, certainly. But not exclusively MMO.

I'd like to see this come as a Online Upgrade for Multiplayer Gang Warfare. If this would mess with any way with Single Player then it's just a mess. GTA wasn't made to be MMO from the beginning

I don't know if anyone remembers this but I remember reading on megagames.com early last year how a company bought some GTA code and that there was a hint that they were going to implement it into an MMO.
Not sure of the exact details.

if Rockstar was going to make GTA a MMO, they should make 2 version of the game. One with story line, 16-32 players and the other version would be a MMO.

bad idea. the entire city would be in constant chaos. it would be like playing a multiplayer game of halo for the very first time in your life, and all the other players are friggun pro with mostly head shot kills.

I say a GTA may be a good thing but only if it's done right. I see what washablemarker is saying though, that everything may be just too chaotic but we will have to see how it would turn out. Even thought I think it may be a good idea I still don't want them to abandon the single player GTAs and never bring another out again.

I like the storyline in GTA and I agree with Goat that there would probably be no story in the MMO. If there are 2 seperate games, one single player and one MMO, then it's all good with me. I just hope the quality doesn't suffer and that there aren't any montly fees with the MMO and I might just try it.

If they have a multiplayer feature, they can make it so you play single player as you normally would (set character) and then a multiplayer mode in which you play as a customized character. No MMO please, just deathmatch and other minigames is good for me.
