View Full Version : Why I think it WON'T be London
London is not an island, Rockstar made SA, VC and LC all islands and that was fair enough, but London is surrounded by other cities and countryside, only way to make it realistic would be to have the entire UK. No one (I hope) wants invisible walls at the end of roads.
It wouldn't feel right to play on an island which infrastructure mimics London, or also for the game to be entitled Grand Theft Auto IV: London.
I believe it will be a totally new and original (made up) location, perhaps based in parts on London, or other places, but it will not be London.
No invisible walls please.

I agree.
I personally think it will be based on all of Europe. And actually hope somehting like this will happen.
Also, seeing as alot of people think it will be London (for years and years already), I think Rockstar will choose not to make a city based entirely on London, everyone likes a little suprise.

Hello, Rockstar isn't simulating real life.
Also, Rockstar don't go with real life names, however, they DO base it on real life cities/states. San Andreas (California), Vice City (Miami), III (New York)
Have you even played GTA? :p

Los Angeles is not an island. San Fransisco is a peninsula. Las Vegas is not an island. Miami is not an island although there's islands and a cape nearby. New York is the only one which truly is an island (Portland = western Long Island, Staunton = Manhattan Island, and SSV = New Jersey which is actually mainland). GTA will always be islands, unless you want invisible walls.
They could go for the old way of making something happen that makes you unable to leave. The airports in Vice City didn't take you anywhere else. A tunnel if i remember correctly in GTA3 was blocked off even after you beat the game and it would have taken you to a different city if it was open

I don't think either of you got what I was saying. Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City etc were all based on real life locations but were islands. However, as I said perhaps based in parts on London, or other places, but it will not be London. I said it could be based on London. It won't be exactly London. It would have to be an island. Which is all I was saying.

Khm.. I thought Las Vegas (Las Venturas) was in Nevada, not California.. Miami isn't a island all by itself and neither is the California/Nevada setting of GTA: SA. So I guess they could make London as a city on an island without anything else around it.. also, GTA Mission Pack #1 was called London (no imaginary name) which would lead eventually to it being called London.. but R* probably won't be as predictable as the games before and will not have Carcer City or London, but some American city..

Nope, not really :P
But personally, I wouldn't like a non-American location as much. Not because I think like "oh USA is the best!" kind of thing, but.. well it's not easy to explain :(

Yes, TNG, but we are talking about the setting, not the title.. GTA III was just GTA III, not Liberty City.. So will this be, probably.
@ST
I can explain that. USA is the most violent country on the streets, where crime is something in their life-style. You agree?

USA isn't the most violent country :P There are way more countries which are violent. USA are just notoriously known for the violence and gangs.
Only reason why gta wouldn't feel so 'gtaish' if it wasn't in America is because all games apart from gta:london have been in America.

I'm pretty sure there just going to call it GTA: IV, not GTA: IV London. The fact that London isn't an island won't matter to R*, I mean Nevada doesn't even have any ocean anywhere in the state, let alone in Vegas, whick Las Venturas was based on. I personaly think it's going to be Carcer City and not London, but London's defenitly a possibilty.
GTA, so far, has been based on cities in states next to water. New York had connection to water, New Jersey had connection to water, California had connection to water and Florida had connection to water. If this is the case, we might see a place like Seattle, Washington and maybe even parts of Oregon. Hm.. It is different enough from the previous locations, I think.first post said lc was an island it was"suposed" to be part of the main land joined at the top of shoreside valeThis would explain the barrier and hills of Shoreside Vale in GTAIII.

I personally wouldn't mind a GTA game in set in Wester Europe in general. But TBH I'm hoping GTA: IV will be set in the US. Or maybe they'll start making GTA worlds with different continents? Who knows. Blu-Ray CAN hold alot on one disc (50 gig's Dual Layer). But then again they're also working on the 360 which holds much less on a single disc (they still use regular DVDs for their videogames so dual layer is 9 gigs like with san andreas [tho they only used about 4 for san an]). Anyways I dunno, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a city based on London in a future GTA.

The name is confirmed at GTA IV, but for some reason there are people who bring that up a lot thinking when we have a setting confirmation, Rockstar will throw the name after the "IV".

NY would be cool and all. But NYC-based games are old. I mean, there's just too many imo. And Liberty City is mostly NYC in the GTA "world". But you can't leave out the possibility that maybe R* is leaning towards making GTA more realistic, and they would do so setting the game in an actual rendered city (London, NYC, Chicago etc.).

While we're on the London topic, I think I'll mention what I've been thinking about the setting.
In VCS there were a few big London references. Some peds on the street mentioned it (I think) and it was brought up a bit on the radio. Now I don't know if Rockstar would make the references they always make to the next - games setting so obvious.
Really, who knows though. My philosophy: we'll have to wait and see.

Watched Scarface? Vice City basically follows the storyline, Diaz's mansion is pretty much exactly the same as the one in Scarface.
I wouldn't mind NYC again in GTAIV, aslong as it looks nothing like LC.

nyc is doubtful. it is usually citys that are well known right...they did a nyc type city, 80's miami, set on miami vice. and SA on the early 90's cali gangsta rap theme.
so not being american i arnt sure of what american city or area was a big deal in the 70's say.......even tho i dont want to go before 80's, i cant see them being any sooner.

New Jersey, anyway, others cities they havn't done include Chicago and Detroit. Plus all this news about New York, could be to throw us off the tracks, there seems to be a big buzz around it and I find it odd.

Why I think GTA IV won't be in London, is because everyone is also forgetting about GTA2.
Maybe the chances are they won't do a GTA IV: London? Maybe it won't even be on this world, and a totally made up area, with real-life like features as other games have had... maybe they do it that way, instead of being so restricted to the world, which is mainly now the East...
London was only an expansion...

Ok let's see...
GTA1 engine:
-GTA: Liberty City (New York City), San Andreas (San Francisco), and Vice City (Miami).
-GTA London: London.
GTA2 engine:
-GTA2: Anywhere City (?).
GTA3 engine:
-GTA III: Liberty City (New York City).
-GTA VC: Vice City (Miami).
-GTA SA: San Andreas (San Francisco).
GTA4 engine:
-GTA IV: ...
It could be either London again, or Anywhere City, which could be, for exampl... Liberty City set in the future!
But i doubt it'll be just one city. So LibertyCity doesn't fit. Maybe it could be LC and AC and London heh.

I reckon that it is likely to be this 'Carcer City' if not then it will be based in a 1960's London, another possiblity is that it may feature all the American GTA cities like the first ever GTA with San Andreas just being one city instead of three.

I'm not crying over the fact of it being in London, I just was thinking maybe they wouldn't do London, and may move the series into GTA2 instead. I actually figured it would be in London, but I would never want it to be soley London, no matter how big it is.
It still was only an expansion*, which makes me think R* would have no problem not doing London, but the whole area maybe? I think that the only true way to go, is London, London's Area, or a completely new.

I am hoping for Chicago (Salvatore life story), Detroit (Motor City goes along with GTA), Denver (SNOW), Dallas (everything bigger in TX, this game is BIGGER), Philladelphia (Home State).....If it were in Europe it would be cool to be in Italy to follow Mafia a storyline again. But wait, why not be just Europe...
Personally I'd like to see Holland-like (Amsterdam?), Germany-like (Muenchen?), UK-like (London?, Edinburgh?), and other American-like locations. Not real names, and they'd have to be islands, of course.
A massive map where you really do need airports to visit the different places. There'll be enough space on the discs they use to have more than 5 San Andreas sized maps, and bigger than San Andreas ones at that. (I am actually just guessing though).
I hope they utilise that.

I'd just like to say, London isn't only a city, it's a conurbation which means it's built up of cities and towns and therefore, making it like an American 'State'. You guys only know London by the most central parts like Picadilly, Oxford etc.
I think they'll skip London, as GTA: London was an expansion, and LCS and VCS were "expansions", sort of.
