As far as I knew, he was just trying to stop Microsoft selling the Xbox360 version to minors. It's the store clerks who shouldn't be selling games to kids if they're rating for higher ages.

Thompson has backed a number of anti-game laws which have been shot down due to First Amendment violations. Recently, he tried to have an injunction issued against the release of Rockstar’s game Bully, but failed.
If he can't succeed with that, i'd say he has no chance against Microsoft and Rockstar.

Does Jack Thompson actualy think this will accomplish anything for it to have an effet on children, most of what they do is learned through being on the street, not on videogames or tv.

I think JT does more harm than the actual video games that he's crusading against. He'll lose this hopeless battle again, and then his kids will be picked on for having a loony for a father, but he doesn't care that his son is being picked on because he's fighting to "save our children". JT is up agaisnt some powerfull people , thats why he will never succed. The GTA series is popular with folks in high places it is rumored.He is even become a lauhing stock amoung the bar association. :)
