Does anyone know if the new versions on the Xbox of GTA3 and Vice City will be able to be modded like the computer versions ?? I guess there is so many ways u could do it but im wondering if it has been mentioned or even thought of ??

no.
its a dvd, and you dont install it onto the xbox.
well you could, but its too complicated and time-consuming for anyones purposes at this time.

now, for the vice city ps2 version, gta3.img and some other dff's and many other files were visible when you entered it into your DVD drive. I don't know if R* has updated their stuff so this doesn't happen. But, if you want to try it, and you want to risk the state of your game, enter the cd into your dvd drive (assuming you have one) and view all the stuff... see what you could find. You can open the gta3.img file with the IMG Tool, but i dont know if you should mod it or not

Yeah thats fair enuff. Im sure it can be very easily done. I could find out the contents of whats on both discs so is that the file im looking for ?? A file wid .IMG at the end or what. I dunno sorry if im asking stupid ass questions but im interested if it can be done.

well, yes. an .img file will have many files in it that are basically models and textures of almost everything you see in vice city.

i dont see why you couldnt edit the xbox version.
the only thing that would prevent it is if take2 completely re-did the game. i dont think they wouldve spent all the time or money to do that. besides, it wouldnt be the same.

Yeah sounds like something someone will try and get more info on sometime in the future i hope. It would be interesting if something can be done, considering the games looks great..

well, i dont think that many people have tried it for the original ps2 game, and look at how long thats been out...
its just too big of a hassle for most people
rappo
11-10-2003, 05:49 PM
well, you can convince a friend to try it... just say that you can put in really cool cars instead of the original ones and mess up someone elses game, or you can just get a rental and risk getting caught!
brokenfish
11-10-2003, 05:51 PM
no you wont get caught. the game dvds arent rewriteable.
you just copy the dvd to your hard drive, apply the mods, then burn it on another new dvd, with the modded game.
rappo
11-10-2003, 06:03 PM
well, lets just hope he has a dvd-rw. if not, then tough luck, you won't find out until you get hold of a dvd-rw. oh, and I hope your friends or anybody else you know is not dumb enough to mod an xbox game that they bought with their own many at full price (assuming they like the game). If you have some money to blow, or you get it as a gift somehow... you should try it out mr. djbboy and enlighten us all!
brokenfish
11-10-2003, 06:06 PM
no, i said theyre not rewriteable
once you buy the xbox game, it stays as it is. theres no danger in trying to mod it, because youll just have to burn a new dvd. do you get what im saying? :)
its better to use a rewriteable dvd disc for burning the modded one because if it turns out bad, then you can just try again. only a few more hours to wait :evil3:
i would rather not go through the trouble and just leave it alone.
rappo
11-10-2003, 06:48 PM
AH, i get it now... well, there also MIGHT be the risk of screwing up your Xbox if you are not careful and miss some files... that would stink.
Advice: if you want to mod an XBOX game, you better know what you're doing! hopefully, you didn't have to hear that from me!
brokenfish
11-11-2003, 08:46 PM
how might you risk your xbox? theres no harm to be done to anything except for the dvd that youre making. if its rewriteable, then theres no danger anywhere at all. just a waste of time :)

Brokenfish i understand what ur saying. The missing files on the cd or the stuffed up files on the cd would simply just currupt the game and u wont be able to play the game, hence the waste of the cd u just burnt. The Xbox is safe, its not like the cd will just explode if it dont run properly.
Well i dunno, i just thought id ask around to see if anyone has heard of any other people trying it or working on something to get into the game files abit more. I actually went searching through the files of the game and found a file gta3.img it was placed with the models folder and was about 120mb in size. Im guessing thats the file u were talking about cause its probably the largest file on the whole cd. Thankx for ur help guys hopefully if something comes about i will hear about it and let u guys know. Thankx again..

ahh, i dont think you understand what im saying...
the xbox game is technically moddable. no risks, nothing. you CAN mod it.
all you have to do is copy the dvd contents, then mod it, and later burn it to a new dvd. i dont know if youll need a mod-chip or anything though.

11-12-2003, 10:08 PM
Yeah thats what i meant. Must of said it in a way that didnt make sence sorry. Well i can do it with out wasting any cd's which is good, but then again i dunno how i would go about modding everything. Do u think if i used like a PC skin of a car a tried it into the Xbox game it would work ? If so how would i go about trying it ?? If its to much to ask that is.

like i said, im not sure if the games are specially protected so that the system cant read ordinary discs. but if you follow regular modding procedures then it is possible.
djbboy
11-12-2003, 10:13 PM
Well im fairly new to modding so i would not have the first idea to even start with any mod. Thats why i kinda signed up on some forums looking for help. I can do it all i just need the info on how to do it i guess.. Plus think of the game not on CD, but on a Hard Drive. Thats how im doing it..

...i know. besides xbox/ps2/gc discs are all dvds.
you can only mod on a hard disk...
well look at the first post i made. if you get img tool and then you just replace the correct txds for the skins of the cars you want, then youre done. skins are probably the easiest to install

11-12-2003, 10:22 PM
Yeah sorry i just came across ur post at the top. Can i use that same IMG tool on ur site for GTA3 ?? This one here
http://brokenfish.gtagaming.com/dload.php?action=f ile&file_id=2&sid=8a374932f3d39d6075fa9ab3dfc67ee1
Can i use that one for the GTA3.img file and then follow the instructions in ur sticky ??
BTW thankx for this :)

Also i apologie is this is stupid to ask, but most cars i download from websites are in bmp format. I have opened the GTA3.img file in that image tool on ur website :)
And it came up wid a huge ass list of stuff. So how do i get cars that would be in the dff and txd format.. Sorry again ..
DJBBOY
brokenfish
11-12-2003, 10:41 PM
bmp?!
no. they should come in a txd and a dff.
the dff is the model of the car (usually a custom car)
the txd is the skin. dont mix and match skins though - it will turn out horrendous.
you can download some cars from my site or look around for more, but they should come with instructions. again, please read the first post. right now, it tells you the basics for modding. i think i added the car installation guide recently too. so read that :D
djbboy
11-12-2003, 10:44 PM
Yeah i understand how to do the cars and modding and stuff just the fact of the car i wanted to try was in bmp.. or in the other case was a self extracting zip which i could not use simply cause the folders are not set out the same i guess...
http://gta3ms.strategy-x.com/supra.zip
^^ Thats the car i wanted but everything else i have dowloaded was in bmp. Can the cars on ur site replace the ones in GTA3 cause i see ur site is more leaning towards VC ?

11-12-2003, 10:47 PM
yes my site is vice city. some cars are back-compatible, others are not. just to stay safe, i wouldnt mix them. cars in gta3 dont need reflection maps because they all share one. on the other hand, each vice city car has its own map.
its easier to import to vice city and be safe than to do the other way around.
would you mind waiting until this weekend or something? or you might try asking other places. because i have so much school work, i dont think i can explain everything in detail until then.
and im about to go to bed now, so see you later :)

11-12-2003, 10:49 PM
Yeah sorry man. Thats kool. I will try and work out some other places to get some cars. But i will come back here and wait for info from u. Thank u for ur help.

hey BF, i was messing round wid a few things on some of the files, and i realised that the files on the xbox inside the .img file are actually alot smaller to the PC ones. I mean the car textures... I actually tried to mod a few cars, renamed the default ones and put new ones in there. Transfered the file over and fired up the game. But, nuffin happened. The game loaded as if nuffin changed. So i dunno if the cars have to be exact filesize or what, if so i dont think the pc mods will work..
DJBBOY
brokenfish
11-13-2003, 04:25 PM
no. the filesizes SHOULD be a lot smaller. its because the modded cars are more detailed and better, of course.
if you did everything right (rebuild the archive if it doesnt really work), then the cars should be changed.
the game looks for the car names, not the filesizes.
are you sure you put the new img onto a dvdrw?
and the xbox took it?
djbboy
11-13-2003, 09:56 PM
What i did was i got a file to replace the banshee ... Since i know the banshee is located in that car shop so its easy to check out. I replaced the right file after i renamed the original. Then i just transfered the img file to the folder on the xbox hard drive then ran the game. And nuffin worked. I never rebuilt the archive, so maybe i should try that u think. I renamed the original gta3.img aswell and placed it into another directory and all, but the game still just had the original banshee..

seems to me that if u have a modded xbox, then you could just copy the game to your xb hd, then ftp your xbox to your pc, and mod it just as if it was an installed pc version....which brings up a new question in my mind....has anyone thought of ripping the higher poly and higher res cars....maybe even the new reflection mapping... out of the xb versions and making them available to use on the pc version.....sort of a "high definition" mod?
djbboy
11-14-2003, 07:20 AM
^^^ Yeah thats exactyl how i have it :) And yeah that possiblity of taking some files from the Xbox version to the PC would be kool. But i really am hoping someone can work it out the opposite way :)
I transfered the file after rebuliding the archive and still the same thing. So i guess there has to be something more ud have to do to make it work out right. Guess i just have to wait for someone else whom has a lil bit more knowledge about the whole thing.

yeah....i've never really gotten any mods on my own pc to work either....for some reason even just changing textures doesn't do anything (i tried making the water red, and making a jet look like the one from austin powers, but nothing ever changed :( )
brokenfish
11-14-2003, 04:19 PM
sorry if i missed something for not reading all that, but im busy right now...
what gta3.img file did you edit?
you might have modded vice city.. ;)
i think in gta3 car models and textures might have been smaller because of the shared characteristics...
so try out your vice city game and get a banshee from there.
if you download mods from my site, its a vice city mod ;)
capt anarchy - are you sure you edited the correct files? many look similar.
hey djbboy: i want those xbox models and textures :D
captain_anarchy
11-14-2003, 07:55 PM
ummm....i believe i just replaced some of the files in gta3.img

11-14-2003, 08:59 PM
which ones? and what car? stuff like that
captain_anarchy
11-14-2003, 09:11 PM
ummm.....i don't really remember =P ....it's not that important....i just kinda thought it would look cool to have red water and an austin powers plane :D

11-14-2003, 09:12 PM
oh
well i dont think you define water from the img... but i never wanted to do that. so im not sure.

11-14-2003, 09:14 PM
i found some water lookin' textures to replace....it might've been one used in swimming pools and such not the ocean, but iunno

11-14-2003, 09:15 PM
oh. i think ive seen a mod for water and fire before.
its in a main txd not img.
captain_anarchy
11-14-2003, 09:18 PM
i thought fire was handled by particle.cfg?
brokenfish
11-14-2003, 09:19 PM
yeah thats the amount and time and stuff...
but the textures.
captain_anarchy
11-14-2003, 09:20 PM
i got a mod one time that made fire look tottally different (and a lot better, for that matter) that i think only modded particle.cfg.....lemme see if i deleted it yet... :P
brokenfish
11-14-2003, 09:22 PM
dont bother... im not really interested.
all i do is mission mods. the other ones are too annoying
djbboy
11-15-2003, 05:15 AM
Well i dunno ... I think im just gonna wait until someone works it out for them self. I downloaded GTA3 cars and tried modding the GTA3 .img file. Nuffin worked and i also tried using a few programs that u can use for the PC game, and it reads the files but has a shitload of errors. So i guess that means the programs will not understand some of the coding. I have gone through a few sites and there are people asking everywhere. So it will be only a matter of time before someone works it out :)
