HD-DVD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDDVD) or Blu-Ray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-Ray) ?
Blu-Ray is backed up by quite a few big companies such as Warner Bros, though pricing will heavily come into play as I don't think many movies will take up to 50 gb.

Right now, we're good with DVDs; HD-DVD and Blu-Ray aren't really an option until HDTVs become standard.
And since I'm a bit of a PS3 fanboy, I'll go with Blu-Ray, although some actions taken by Sony really has disappointed me through the last couple days.

I voted Blu-Ray because if the technology is there for getting that amount of capacity from a DVD i can't see the Media industry letting it slip away to nowhere.

Blu-Ray seems to win this in my opinion. The 50 gig is just too convincing.

I would perfer Bru-Ray prevailed, but I have a feeling HD will be more of a hit, cause people hear "DVD", they think "Oh, I know what those are". But not so many people are familiar with Blu-Ray.

Sony really needs to educate the people about the advantages of blu-ray or it will simply fail.

Fucking right. And with Microsoft getting a full year's head start, the '06 holiday season isn't looking too promising for Blu-Ray.
I think Blu Ray simply because by March next year there will be around 6 million Blu Ray/PS3's in homes around the world.
I'd love to get a Blu-Ray DVD burner, 50GB per disk would be sweet

They're already selling blu ray burners.

Blu-Ray. For one, it has more than 80% of the major Hollywood studios on its side, as well as a huge number of computer companies such as Dell, Apple, Gateway, etc..
Not only that, but with PS3 the number of Blu-Ray players in homes will be significantly larger than that of HD-DVD within a day.
If your argument is that it will fail because Betamax failed, then you need a new argument. Betamax failed because it was in the same position as HD-DVD is in right now. It didn't have nearly as much support as VHS had.

You do know blueray will boost the game cost by atleast 5-10 bucks... The Xbox360 games are already 60 bucks now add 5 or 10 bucks to that , 65 up to 70 bucks for a game fuck that. I vote currentgen.
When your spending $60 dollars alreay 5-10 dollars extra for alot more levels, dialoge and more space for textures and true HD audio(capible of 6.1/7.1 surround sound 5-10 dollars is nothing.

Uhh, no. :/
You see, there have already been game companies who have announced their PS3 pricing. And guess what the games cost. $60.
It doesn't cost that much more to make a Blu-Ray disk. It's a peice of plastic with a label on it. :P
It has been said that with the Blu-Ray technology, games will be higher in pricing, that isn't final though, just something stated.

Hirai has said that games will be from $60 - $99.

I hate the way Sony tout their proprietary technologies so I hope Blu-ray is a tremendous failure.

Blu-Ray isn't a sony proprietary technology. Betamax was, UMD was, Mini-disc was...blu-ray is not.
So enough.

I have a fundamental disagreement with the way Sony go about promoting technology that they either develop or support the establishment of. Whether or not this is exactly the same as UMD etc. I don't wish to support any new technology backed so substantially by them (not specifically to boycott their financial gain but that's a part of it).

There have been what, 20,000 HD-DVD players sold? Funny how with the PS3 Blu-Ray will outsell HD-DVD in a single day. I havn't seen a single advertisement for an HD-DVD player or movie, but I have for Blu-Ray.

So....you hope it crashes and burns because of the way they promote a product they had a hand in developing?
That would be like if I hoped Mercedes died off just because GM is involved.

Interesting initial choice of words considering that the consortium is led by Sony (listing its backing is irrelevant as I'm not trying to make the point that Blu-ray will fail) and it's certainly not as though all of them have as much at stake as each other (and the leaders including (most significantly) Sony). And your point (whilst probably not intended to support my views) about the PS3's trojan-horse deployment of the technology is a perfect example of why I feel this way.
Cyrix: Whatever point you're trying to make, I don't feel such analogous situations can be used to represent my exact feelings on this matter (there is nothing in existence effectively comparable considering the complications of this matter). I don't wish to support any format tied to consumer electronics led by Sony.

It just dawned on me....
I can't believe the post count, join date, wording, etc... didn't hit me before. Not to mention the UN.

What do you mean by win? If you mean "do you think PS3 will win the next gen war?" then no.
I think he's talking about what next gen disk format will win not what next gen console will win, Also an interesting note is that the PS3 will launch with more consoles then the 360 did the same time last year. Also it apparently will ship with more units in the first year then the 360 too, but the 1 year head start in each region is a major setback. But i still think Sony will end up winning or atleast selling as much as the 360 over the entire span of the console.

How can a disk format win anything?
How can a disk format win anything?Because both of these formats (HD-DVD/Blu Ray) are "fighting" to become the sucessor to DVD, like Betamax vs Video tapes only one will survive so he is asking wich of these two formats will become the new standard for movies to be recorded on.

Oh I see now. I imagine there will be a brief period of time where HD-DVD will be used, then Blu-ray will take over nto long after.

If your argument is that it will fail because Betamax failed, then you need a new argument. Betamax failed because it was in the same position as HD-DVD is in right now. It didn't have nearly as much support as VHS had.
pretty much says it all
